On top of the pile of wild vegetables and fruits in front of Wang Lun and Li Ling, there were two dried fish. Clearly, Li Ling and her companion hadn't eaten the fish. So what had they eaten? Wild fruits and bananas, perhaps? But even with just that, the two had persevered until now and brought back so much. Among them were the much-needed banana tree bark, not to mention the thick hemp rope that was five or six meters long.
Liu Ruoxi and Wang Lun exchanged a glance, both seeing shock and pity in each other's eyes. They then simultaneously looked at Li Ling and Liu Ruoling, who were sleeping.
Wang Lun said, "Let's cook the coconut crabs for them later, so they can eat them first." Liu Ruoxi said, "Okay, there's some fresh water in the pot." Wang Lun nodded and said, "Let's take turns keeping watch tonight, so they can get some rest. What do you think?" Liu Ruoxi said, "That's what I was thinking too. But you should rest for a while too, you've walked so far today." Wang Lun shook his head and said, "I'm not tired. You cook the coconut crabs for them first, they'll probably wake up soon." After saying that, Wang Lun walked towards the beach.
When Liu Ruoxi saw Wang Lun walking towards the beach, she assumed he was going to the toilet and didn't pay much attention. Instead, she set up a pot and started cooking coconut crab.
They waited until the coconut crabs were cooked, but Wang Lun still hadn't returned. Liu Ruoxi stepped out from behind the windbreak and saw Wang Lun sitting quietly on the beach in the distance. Liu Ruoxi wanted to go over and ask what was wrong, but after thinking about it, she decided against it. She simply sat quietly on the ground, watching Wang Lun's figure in the distance.
A moment later, a rustling sound came from behind. Liu Ruoxi turned around and saw that Li Ling and Liu Ruoling had both gotten up. Liu Ruoxi stood up and told them to eat the coconut crab first. Although Liu Ruoxi had a lot to say and many questions to ask, she held back and didn't say or ask anything. The most important thing now was for them to eat something so they wouldn't go hungry.
Upon seeing the cooked coconut crab, Li Ling and Liu Ruoling immediately grabbed a claw and began eating. After a few bites, Li Ling realized someone was missing and asked, "Where's Wang Lun? Where did he go?" Liu Ruoxi told her to eat first and they could talk afterward. Li Ling refused, putting down her coconut crab claw and saying, "If you won't tell me, then I won't eat." This left Liu Ruoling, who was eating the claw, somewhat bewildered.
Liu Ruoxi sighed, handed the coconut crab claw to Li Ling, and then told her to follow. Li Ling took the claw and followed her out of the windbreak wall. They saw Wang Lun sitting quietly on the beach in the distance, facing the sea, seemingly doing nothing. Liu Ruoxi said, "He's been sitting there for a long time." Li Ling nodded and walked towards him. At this moment, Liu Ruoling was about to follow, but Liu Ruoxi stopped her and shook her head. Seeing Liu Ruoxi shake her head, Liu Ruoling didn't follow either, but simply stayed there, watching them with Liu Ruoxi.
Li Ling sat down next to Wang Lun and handed him the crab pliers. Wang Lun took the pliers and scooped out the crab meat for Li Ling, then handed it to her. The two of them, one scooping out the crab meat, could simply wait to eat. Soon, the meat in the pliers was gone, and Li Ling said, "Let's go, we should go back." Wang Lun shook his head and said, "You go back first, I'll sit a little longer." Li Ling stared at Wang Lun, who turned to look at the dark sea.
Li Ling turned Wang Lun's head and kissed him on the cheek. Afterwards, Li Ling said, "So, can we go back now?" Unexpectedly, Wang Lun, who never cried in front of others, burst into tears. Seeing this, Li Ling could only sigh. She understood why Wang Lun was crying. Before, even during such difficult times, Wang Lun hadn't shed a single tear, and he even got up early every day to make breakfast for Li Ling without ever complaining. But today, he was crying. Li Ling held Wang Lun, sitting there quietly.
After a while, Wang Lun calmed down a bit. He struggled to leave Li Ling's embrace, wiped his eyes, and said, "Let's go back." Li Ling said, "Let's talk a little longer." Wang Lun looked at Li Ling, who said, "Right now, you can't manage all of us alone here. Besides, we're capable of doing things. We don't want to be supported by you like ornaments. I feel the same way. Do you understand?" Wang Lun nodded, then shook his head, saying, "I know, but I won't let you be in danger." Li Ling said, "We know you want to protect us, but on this deserted island, we can't rely solely on your protection. We also need to be able to protect ourselves. We hope to work with you. We don't want you to bear everything alone; we want to help you." Wang Lun listened to Li Ling's words and quietly looked at her, and Li Ling quietly looked at Wang Lun as well.
A gentle sea breeze caressed the shore, and the waves surged. The two looked at each other for a moment, and finally Wang Lun relented, saying, "Let's go back." He stood up, offered his hand to Li Ling, who took it, and Wang Lun pulled her up. Hand in hand, they walked back to the shelter.
Back at the shelter, Liu Ruoling saw the two holding hands, so she went up and took Wang Lun's other hand, holding it tightly, and glanced at Li Ling. Li Ling couldn't help but smile. Wang Lun was speechless. Liu Ruoxi, who was standing next to them, actually wanted to do the same, but suppressed the impulse.
The four returned to the campfire and sat on the ground. Li Ling and Liu Ruoxi ate coconut crab, while Wang Lun and Liu Ruoxi watched them eat. Li Ling asked Wang Lun to peel the meat from the crab legs for her, and Wang Lun took the crab legs. Little did he know, Liu Ruoxi was also jealous and wanted Wang Lun to peel them for her too. How could Wang Lun refuse? He could only peel the crab shells for the two of them, and they could just wait to eat.
After finishing the coconut crab, the two people eating it weren't tired at all, but Wang Lun, who was originally just watching them eat, was exhausted. After all, with two mouths waiting to be fed, how could he possibly manage? As for Liu Ruoxi, she originally planned to help peel the crab shell, but since the two of them wouldn't eat it and insisted on eating what Wang Lun peeled, Liu Ruoxi ended up peeling two crab legs, putting one into Wang Lun's mouth and eating the other herself.
Fortunately, the two didn't get into a fight when eating the wild vegetable stewed fish after finishing the coconut crab, otherwise Wang Lun probably wouldn't have been able to handle it all by himself.
The two ate a coconut crab and some stewed fish with wild vegetables, and were finally full. Their bellies were clearly visible. Wang Lun told them to save the remaining stewed fish and wild vegetables for a midnight snack while they kept watch that night.
Then the four of them sat around the campfire and listened to Li Ling and Liu Ruoling tell them about their day.
