Li Ling frowned suspiciously, her tone threatening, "Are you sure you don't? I'm warning you, don't try anything funny again. If there's a next time, see how I deal with you!" As she spoke, she waved her hand as if to cut.
Wang Lun was startled by this sudden action, his whole body trembling and his heart pounding with fear. He knew that Li Ling always meant what she said, and if she said she would castrate him, she would definitely not hesitate. So, he hurriedly waved his hands and explained, "No, no, I was really just trying to figure out how to catch mice."
Li Ling remained skeptical, staring at Wang Lun as she pondered to herself. After all, Wang Lun had a history of misconduct, and she couldn't easily believe his story. However, when she met his gaze, she saw the sincerity and determination in his eyes, which made her waver slightly. Perhaps, this time he really wasn't lying?
Nevertheless, Li Ling decided to remain somewhat cautious. She gave a soft hum and said, "That's good. But remember, don't cause me any more trouble. Otherwise, you'll face the consequences."
Wang Lun nodded repeatedly, letting out a sigh of relief. At the same time, recalling what Li Ling had just mentioned, he couldn't help but ask curiously, "You just said Ruoxi almost committed suicide?"
Li Ling stared sharply at Wang Lun, her tone tinged with dissatisfaction and sarcasm: "What, only now do you think about caring about others? Why didn't you consider the consequences before you acted?" Her words contained a hint of anger, a touch of mockery, and a barely perceptible trace of jealousy. However, even Li Ling herself was unaware of this jealousy.
Wang Lun frowned and explained earnestly, "I really didn't mean it. I will take full responsibility for this." After saying that, he ignored Li Ling. At this moment, Wang Lun's mind was in turmoil. On one hand, he felt guilty towards Liu Ruoxi, and on the other hand, he was wondering how to face the person in front of him.
Li Ling opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but didn't know where to begin. Take responsibility? He had to take responsibility for that girl, so what was she? She wanted to scold Wang Lun, but for a moment she couldn't find the right words to express her anger and resentment.
Li Ling opened her mouth several times, but ultimately chose to remain silent, uttering not a single word. So the two sat there quietly, caught in an awkward silence. Only the crackling flames in the hearth and the howling wind outside the earthen house filled the air. Apart from that, all was silent, as if time itself had frozen.
However, deep within their hearts, a tremendous storm was brewing, and their emotions surged like a raging torrent.
Li Ling pondered to herself, "If Wang Lun really gets together with Liu Ruoxi, what should I do? Should I wish them happiness, or should I bravely pursue my own?" In this process, she completely disregarded Liu Ruoxi's feelings. She knew very well that if she were in that situation, she certainly wouldn't refuse. Therefore, she naturally assumed that Liu Ruoxi would feel the same way.
At that moment, Wang Lun was thinking: Liu Ruoxi almost committed suicide. It must be because I didn't treat her well and made her suffer. From now on, I must treat her even better! Hmm, starting tomorrow, I need to go out more often and see if I can find some fresh meat to nourish her body.
But then again, what should we do tomorrow? Should we continue setting traps to catch prey? That would be safer, but what if we catch rats, and Liu Ruoxi doesn't like to eat them? Maybe we should lie and say it's not rat meat. But then again, is lying to her really a good idea...?
In this strange atmosphere, Liu Ruoling rubbed her eyes and got up. Still half-asleep, she walked to the hearth to relieve herself. However, when she got closer, she found Wang Lun and Liu Ruoxi sitting there quietly, without saying a word. Worse still, the fire in the hearth was almost out. Liu Ruoling felt a little strange and called out loudly, "Sister Li Ling, Brother Wang Lun, what are you two doing? The fire is almost out!"
After speaking, Liu Ruoling stepped forward, took out a longer piece of firewood that was still burning, and led the way outside. This caused even greater damage to the already nearly extinguished fire. Fortunately, Li Ling and Wang Lun were alerted and hurriedly added firewood to the fire pit.
After a while, Liu Ruoling returned and found that Li Ling and Wang Lun were still the same, except that they had added a lot of firewood to the hearth, making the fire particularly strong. Liu Ruoling said, "Brother Wang Lun, Sister Li Ling, you usually tell me to add less firewood, but look how much you've added."
Li Ling and Wang Lun glanced at the fire pit and silently stepped back. They had been lost in thought and hadn't noticed the heat. But after hearing Liu Ruoling's comment, they realized the fire was indeed quite strong, almost scorching hot.
Seeing this, Liu Ruoling sensed that something was off between the two, so she sat down and said, "What's wrong with you two? You seem a bit strange."
Li Ling and Wang Lun exchanged a glance, both somewhat at a loss. They didn't know how to answer the question because they did have something on their minds, but they didn't want Liu Ruoling to know. Finally, Li Ling shook her head and said softly, "It's nothing."
After hearing this, Liu Ruoling did not press the matter further, but instead turned to look at Wang Lun. She seemed to be waiting for Wang Lun's answer.
Wang Lun looked up and met Liu Ruoling's gaze. He pondered to himself whether he should express his feelings to her. He wanted to ask, "How about I be your brother-in-law?" But after some thought, he decided he should wait until Liu Ruoxi made her decision. So, he shook his head and said, "I'm sleepy, I'm going to bed." Without waiting for Li Ling and Liu Ruoling's response, he stood up and walked directly to the edge of the kang (heated brick bed).
Back on the kang (heated brick bed), Wang Lun quickly lay down, closed his eyes, and prepared to sleep. However, unlike before, a small dining table was placed between Wang Lun, Li Ling, and Liu Ruoling, separating them from each other. This was something Wang Lun had specifically requested and personally arranged to maintain a certain distance.
Seeing Wang Lun leave, leaving only Li Ling behind, Liu Ruoling eagerly looked at Li Ling, hoping she could provide more information. Li Ling sensed Liu Ruoling's gaze and softly asked, "Are you sleepy? If not, come and keep watch with me. I'm going to sleep."
