Chapter 27
Sui Yusheng was adopted from Guangming Welfare Home by Deng Yu and his wife when she was only seven years old.
The director did not have a clear explanation as to how he came to be in the welfare home, but he only explained that most of the children here were abandoned babies or homeless people who were taken in by kind people.
The couple agreed that the child was abandoned, even though Sui Yusheng had a pretty face when she was a child.
Because she was well-behaved, pretty and quiet, they just thought they had found a treasure.
Although he had a real home, Sui Yusheng still felt unfamiliar with the new environment, so his personality when he first arrived was not much different from what it is now, and he was relatively quiet. However, this was only temporary.
With his adoptive parents' careful care and thoughtful love for him, even the most ignorant person can feel this love. Sui Yusheng is not a mentally retarded child. He can clearly judge and understand the true and false feelings of others for him, so he gradually opened his heart at a young age.
But this door was closed once in the middle.
The reason was the birth of his younger brother Sui Jiangbao.
As his parents' biological son, Sui Jiangbao was naturally loved by them. Even his grandmother, who had lived in the countryside for a long time, came to help him upon hearing the news.
Everyone's eyes were focused on this child, so naturally, the attention that originally belonged to Sui Yusheng became scarce, like the lack of oxygen in a confined space, so little that Sui Yusheng could feel it clearly, and then he squatted silently in the corner, holding his breath, trying to seal up the beauty of the past.
But everyone knows that people will die without oxygen.
But Sui Yusheng is not dead. He is still alive, living tenaciously, because he has always been a very well-behaved child.
As Sui Jiangbao grew up, Deng Yu realized that her love for Sui Yusheng was no longer as deep as before, so she redoubled her efforts to make up for it. This explains why she seemed to love her adopted child more than her biological son.
Deng Yu mentioned the bracelet briefly, but only gave a brief description because the bracelet came with the child.
She asked Sui Yusheng how valuable the gold bracelet was, and Sui Yusheng replied that the bracelet had always been on him.
Sui Yusheng told Deng Yu that he was abandoned. The dean did not specify the details at the time because he was afraid of hurting the child. The bracelet might be the compensation given to him by his biological parents for abandoning him.
Teng Zheng, who was standing by, only cared about one thing after listening to Deng Yu's narration: "Auntie, do you think Sui Yusheng is cheerful?"
"Isn't he cheerful?" Deng Yu asked back. "I think he has a good temper, except for the stern look he always has towards his brother. I know they don't get along well, and if I were Xiaosheng, I'd also feel resentful, so I understand him. But he has a good personality, right? He always greets me with a smile, and to his friends... he's very warm towards Xiaoxi."
Teng Zheng smiled stiffly, as if he thought Deng Yu was joking. His expression indirectly refuted her words, and he said directly, "He seems to be only passionate about Wen Liangxi."
Deng Yu was obviously not expecting this: "Really? I always thought he treated you the same way he treated Xiaoxi."
Every word of their conversation fell into my ears as I sat there in the background. I didn't say anything not only because I was mute, but also because I was digesting Deng Yu's words.
Her description was filled with mist between the lines, and the wispy fog obscured some details.
But I didn't ask too many questions, my focus was always on Sui Yusheng's bracelet.
I licked my lips, hesitated, and finally attracted Deng Yu's attention: Is there anything special about his bracelet, such as engraved patterns or words written on it?
Deng Yu, like Teng Zheng, had no idea about my sign language. The cleaning lady had already gone off work, but fortunately, the person who worked the night shift with Deng Yu was the same lady who knew sign language.
"I haven't observed this," Deng Yu said. "I rarely touch his things. I've seen this bracelet, but it's just an ordinary gold leaf bracelet. There's no special texture or writing on it. If you're curious, you can go to the city's emergency room and look for Xiaosheng. Xiaozheng knows where he works."
"But why do you treat a bracelet so carefully? Is it a clue to something?"
Teng Zheng also turned to look at me, his eyes clearly showing his confusion about my obsession with the fact that Sui Yusheng had been wearing a bracelet since childhood.
Selfishly, I didn't want to reveal the secret, especially since it was such an uncertain matter. I smiled, but my mouth was tightly shut, my attitude clearly indicating that I didn't want to say more.
As an elder, Deng Yu could sense my reluctance to talk about it, and told me to look for Sui Yusheng if I had any problems.
But I know that Deng Yu probably guessed something.
"Then I'll take you to find someone tomorrow," Teng Zheng looked out the window at the dark scenery. "Then let's call it a day for today?"
I was just about to say yes and that I would find time to go to the rescue room to find someone tomorrow at noon, but I was interrupted by an enthusiastic voice.
"Shouyu, guess what's in my bag?" The playful female voice was getting closer and closer, and finally stopped in front of Deng Yu's cash register.
What I was about to say was suddenly interrupted by the appearance of the woman, and I couldn't help but look at her.
This woman looks and dresses younger than Deng Yu, and even the tone of her voice is full of girlish vitality. But judging by her nickname, I don’t agree that the woman is younger than Deng Yu, especially the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes when she smiles. I think she is the same age as Deng Yu, and they are probably good friends.
The woman smiled deeply. She took the dark brown leather bag off her shoulder, held it in front of her chest with both hands and rocked it slightly like a cradle.
But I found that there seemed to be movement inside the bag?
Deng Yu observed her for a while, but didn't give her a corresponding answer. He just smiled and complained: "What are you trying to do again?"
The woman pretended to be mysterious and insisted that Deng Yu guess. When Deng Yu refused to guess, she muttered a few words under her breath. Then, still with a smile on her face, she looked at Deng Yu cunningly while reaching into her bag to take something out.
A white, sleepy kitten appeared in front of all of us with its tail curled up.
"Oh my god," Deng Yu exclaimed softly, "kitten!"
The white kitten was very obedient, lying adorably on the woman's bent arm. The woman stroked it back and forth, and it didn't seem to struggle or escape. "Yes, I got it from your son's rescue room. Now I finally understand why you like kittens so much. Such an adorable little creature is almost melting me! It's a pity you don't want to keep a cat anymore, otherwise this one would have been fat and white by now."
I could tell from the woman's words that Deng Yu liked cats very much.
Teng Zheng asked what I was thinking: "Auntie, I see you like cats very much. Why don't you want to keep one anymore?"
Deng Yu just smiled and said nothing. The woman beside her quickly explained to Teng Zheng, "She had one cat before, but it was just that kitten... Anyway, after it passed away, she didn't keep any other cats."
Teng Zheng felt a little regretful after hearing this, but he didn't take it too seriously. He made a joking remark and quietly avoided the topic.
But as I listened, I was filled with emotion.
Perhaps it is because I am afraid that sadness will invade again, that the heart-wrenching separation will happen again, or that my sense of loyalty will be reduced, and I don’t want to leave any possibility that the unique place in my heart will be occupied, so I choose to avoid it and no longer raise another cute kitten.
What about Li Ying'an?
This person suddenly came to my mind.
If I find Xiaoju and leave Li Ying'an, will he, like Deng Yu, harbor such deep feelings for me? As the saying goes, the deeper the love, the greater the pain. Since he cares so much about me, will he, like Deng Yu, be reluctant to part with me and stop raising cats?
Thinking that I am the fourth cat he has raised, I admit that I am a little narcissistic, but I can clearly see Li Ying'an's love for me. This love is too heavy, so heavy that I cannot ignore it, but at the same time it seems very light, so light that Li Ying'an is willing to treat me well, even if he eats less and spends less.
"Hey," Teng Zheng nudged me, "What are you thinking about?"
I came back to my senses and smiled at my own gaffe.
On the way back, Teng Zheng and I took different paths. I agreed to meet him after lunch the next day and then we parted ways quietly.
I recalled what Teng Zheng had told me about Xiaoju, and at the same time, I thought of Li Ying'an without hesitation because of the kitten.
Now that I know Xiaoju's whereabouts, finding Xiaoju is the purpose of my coming to this world, so I must go find him.
If that happens, and I find Xiaoju, I will most likely return to heaven with him. In that case, Li Ying'an will lose the fourth cat in his life. Will he be sad?
I guess he must be sad. He filled every corner of his house with things related to me. It is obvious to the naked eye that he loves me. To be honest, I don't really want to be separated from such a good person.
I have my own way. Just as I asked the Goddess of the Green World to come to the human world, I can also pray to stay.
If the result of this search journey is bad, I will neither be able to return to heaven nor become a human being in two years. As a punishment, I can only live here in the form of a cat.
I'm not stupid. To stay well fed and warm, and avoid the harsh cold and heat, I must continue to follow Li Ying'an. If I find Xiaoju, everyone will be happy. Xiaoju returns to heaven, and I will take the initiative to stay and be able to accompany Li Ying'an.
I have a long life, and I think I will be with him until he grows old.
Only death can separate our physical bodies.
Thinking of this...
If I die, I will return to serve the Goddess Wuqing, and if he dies, he will go to the underworld and start his life anew. After drinking Mengpo soup, he may remember nothing, even me, and then start a new life.
Just thinking about it, I suddenly feel like crying.
I don't really want to be separated from such a good person.
Unconsciously, I slowly walked downstairs to the community.
Li Feng turned back into Li Youzhi again.
I walked to the door with a guilty heart, and just as I expected, Li Ying'an was at home and left the door open for me.
Looking at the crack in front of me, I hesitated. I didn't know whether I would be greeted with scolding or concern. If it was scolding, that would be fine, as I deserved it. But if it was concern...
I think I'm too lucky.
"You didn't even come in after getting home," the crack in the door actually spoke, "Why did you run away if you were afraid of being spanked?"
I was startled by the sudden sound coming from in front of me, and I was so scared that I took several steps back.
The door opened quietly, and Li Ying'an appeared at the door.
I looked up at him, his eyes were timid, pitiful and even pretending to be good. Although I couldn't hear the angry tone in Li Ying'an's words, I was still afraid to see anger towards me on his face.
Fortunately, the way Li Ying'an looked at me today was almost the same as usual. The only difference was that there was helplessness in his eyes about my running around, and hidden under his eyelashes was the worry that had been lingering for a long time.
He treated me like a naughty child. I was completely helpless. He squatted down towards me, stretched out his arms, and opened his hands to hug me. "You ran faster than a rabbit this afternoon, childish boy. How dare you go home?"
I walked up to his hand and rolled around in it flatteringly.
He symbolically patted my thigh with the back of his hand, and finally picked me up in his arms and said, "Are you hungry?"
I collapsed bonelessly in his hands, my neck tilted back like a corpse, and he shook me in his hands. Then he stretched out his front paws and slapped them on his face, rubbing him with his paw pads.
"It's so dirty." He said this with disgust, but his eyes, which were smiling wider and wider, and the corners of his lips that were raised betrayed him.
I didn't allow him to say bad things about me, so I blocked his mouth with my claws in retaliation and played with him at the door for a while before going back into the house.
There was no extra nonsense. After entering the house, Li Ying'an never mentioned the fact that I had not returned home for two days.
As if he thought I could talk, he put cat food on the stove, compared it to the rice cooker, and called my name: "Childish boy, what do you want for dinner tonight, cat food or let me light the stove for you?"
He cares more about whether I am hungry than teaching me a lesson.
I hesitated for a moment, then meowed and climbed up Li Ying'an's pants to his shoulders, indicating that I wanted to eat the cooked rice.
Li Ying'an always spoils me. He will make whatever I want to eat. Even if I say I "don't like" something, he will still buy it home, such as the cat food and snacks in the corner.
The better he treats me, the more I am reluctant to leave him. I can only do my best to help Li Ying'an suffer less from society and enjoy more happiness in life.
So the next morning, I got up with Li Ying'an.
After breakfast, Li Ying'an went out to work as usual. I followed him again, waiting for him to let me go. Unexpectedly, as soon as he stood at the door, his footsteps stuck to the ground.
"Are you going out again?" He felt helpless. "How long will you be out today? Can you come home in the evening?"
I called out a single word, then dragged out the final syllable to express my affirmation. Of course, there was also a necessary hint of coquettishness in it.
As expected, Li Ying'an let me go from home.
