Chapter 52
I woke up to a pungent smell.
The room filled with the smell of blood made my stomach churn and I slowly opened my eyes. The colorful lights that came into view flashed randomly on the bars of the iron cage, and then the strong light emitted stung my eyes. It took me a long time to adjust before I could wake up completely.
The dark red curtains hanging around were floating like waves in the wind. The strong light from all directions made the room look like a gathering of many people, so much so that the light from the ceiling was dim, and the surrounding corners were still dark.
Ignoring the eerie atmosphere, what frightened me, even scared me, was that there were many iron cages in this room. Except for the wall near the door and the wall opposite the door, there were cages on the other two sides, stacked in a regular pattern like in a pet hospital. There was a cat in each cage on one side, and they were very panicked, with fear in their eyes. On the other side, there were more empty spaces, and there were cats in twos and threes. I did not belong to any of them, and I was thrown alone in the corner.
It was too strong. When the fan turned around and rotated towards me, the strong smell of blood hit my face. It was so disgusting that I couldn't help but stick out my tongue and vomit. At the same time, my heart, which had calmed down, became heavier.
What on earth is this place? Didn't the director send me to the emergency room? Why am I in such a confined and eerie room? There are so many cats, and they look so fragile, as if they've just experienced a life-and-death struggle. The smell in the air is even more confusing.
A bad thought filled my mind.
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps stopped in front of the door. I held my breath and dared not move, listening to the whimpering sound when the doorknob was roughly pressed down and the back door was opened.
The light was dim, and the man was indeed tall. His face was completely obscured, so I couldn't see who he was. I didn't investigate further, because with this man came another strong smell of blood. I clearly saw that he was holding a box in his hand, and my companion was in the box.
Those were my companions, or to be more precise, the scattered bodies of my companions whom I had not met for less than a year.
My pupils suddenly dilated to a certain extent in my disbelief. I couldn't control the shaking of my body and the loss of my voice due to the panic attack. My body even went limp without me witnessing the process but only the result. It fell to the ground like a puddle of mud, making a sticky sound.
The sound caught the abuser's attention, and I looked him in the eye at my most vulnerable moment, and I saw his face clearly.
Sui language sound.
Like a dead animal, my dilated pupils blurred at that moment, and countless broken souls surrounded my ears, mocking my previous self-righteousness.
Sui Yusheng is still the same Sui Yusheng, the Sui Yusheng who is used to facing everything with indifference. It turns out that indifference is not just his underlying color, his heart is cold, and even the blood flowing into his heart is a fishy dark red.
He is a devil who cannot laugh.
No, maybe he would laugh. Maybe after hurting every weak little animal, he would burst into laughter uncontrollably.
"You'll regret this!"
I thought about what Sui Jiangbao had said earlier, and I actually began to sympathize with myself, and even with Sui Jiangbao, who had already seen through everything, and Deng Yu, his adoptive mother. Especially Deng Yu, she believed Sui Yusheng so much, so much that he was a truly good person, but in the end, she slapped me, and she still had her.
The gentle ringing of the phone gave me a sudden chill.
"Hello."
"Um...are you off work now?"
I came back to my senses and recognized that it was Wen Liangxi's voice.
Sui Yusheng kicked the cat's corpse away from her feet, pulled a chair over and sat down: "Well, what's wrong?"
"My friend's friend lost a cat. He said someone saw it being taken to the rescue room. The friend on duty now said he didn't know the situation. He only knew that you were on duty before midnight tonight."
Wen Liangxi paused, a short chuckle lingering in his ears. "I also remember that you were on duty, but when I got here I remembered that you were on the midnight shift, so I had to call you to bother you. I just wanted to ask if you've ever seen a cat?"
Sui Yusheng turned her gaze to me again: "Of course I have seen it. This cat is not sterilized and looks a little stressed. I was just about to take it to the veterinary hospital for sterilization."
"Send it back first, its owner is very anxious."
"Yeah, okay." After the call was hung up, Sui Yusheng stood up from his seat, walked to the cage where I was locked up, squatted down silently, looked at me for a few times, and then suddenly patted the cage.
I was already frightened by the double blow, and now this thunder-like sound exploded in my ears, and I was shocked.
Sui Yusheng stood up with satisfaction, adjusted herself in front of the mirror covered by the curtain, then bent down and picked me up from the ground.
Li Ying'an and I met in front of the door of the rescue room.
The moment Sui Yusheng let me out of the cage, I forgot about my leg injury. I just wanted to run desperately towards Li Ying'an's arms. I just wanted to get closer to him faster and faster so that I could feel safe enough and escape quickly from the panic just now.
I lay on Li Ying'an's shoulder, my body shaking slightly.
"Thank you for helping me find him," Li Ying'an thanked the two people opposite him, "I'll treat you to a meal when we get together some other day."
The relationship between the few people was slightly connected because of Li Feng. Now that Li Feng was not present, they did not talk much. Before leaving, Wen Liangxi and Li Ying'an exchanged a few polite words, and then the few people dispersed.
Along the way, Li Ying'an probably noticed my unstable mood. He didn't ask any further questions, but gave me enough time to calm down. His hands patted my back, like a mother gently stroking her child to sleep. I followed the rhythm of his patting, and my stiff body gradually relaxed in his arms. Finally, I closed my eyes and fell asleep peacefully.
When I woke up, it was already dawn.
Maybe it was because of the presence of Li Ying'an around me that I didn't have a nightmare last night. I slept very soundly, so soundly that when I woke up this morning, I thought what happened last night was just a dream.
I stood up, hunched my back and stretched, then felt dizzy and spun around and fell down again.
The moment I stood up, Li Ying'an, who had prepared breakfast, had already noticed me. As soon as I lay down, he climbed up the stairs to the bed and sat quietly cross-legged beside me.
I looked at him calmly for a while before I lazily squatted up and turned back into Li Feng under his gaze.
I put the big news aside and started by asking how he found me yesterday: How did you meet Wen Liangxi?
As I guessed, the fact was that Li Ying'an received a message from Li Lan from the welfare home, and learned that I was taken to the welfare home, and then he went to the destination without hesitation.
But I don’t understand, how did he meet Wen Liangxi?
Li Ying'an told me that Wen Liangxi thought I was working the night shift, but he didn't know that I had already taken leave. Li Ying'an happened to pass by nearby, and he got to know Li Ying'an through me, so the two of them got together and came to the rescue room to look for me.
Li Ying'an said that Wen Liangxi came to see me because he had something important to say.
After hearing his explanation, I was actually a little impatient to meet Wen Liangxi. I wanted to tell him everything I knew, for fear that Sui Yusheng would persecute him.
"What about you? How did you get caught last night?"
I told Li Ying'an everything I saw and heard last night.
"So Qiqi is right," Li Ying'an's expression darkened as I continued my explanation. "The filthy conditions she described do exist in that orphanage."
I nodded weakly, my mind completely unconcerned with the questions Li Ying'an asked. Instead, I was obsessed with recalling what I had witnessed in that suffocating room last night.
"Hey, childish ghost, another one, Li Feng...?"
I slowly came back to my senses in the sound of calls, and my empty eyes were gradually filled with Li Ying'an's worried expression. I blinked and tried to hide my emotions, but I found that no matter how I tried to hide them, my brain would continue to replay the heavy scene of yesterday for me. I hung my head dejectedly.
"You look like you have something seriously on your mind," Li Ying'an moved closer to me, so that we were close together. "Tell me, have you encountered anything else? Otherwise, you wouldn't be like this."
I looked at Li Ying'an with a complicated expression. His gentle appearance was in sharp contrast to Sui Yusheng, who was as cold as a ghost under the light I saw last night. Whenever I thought of that person, my whole body felt like it was soaked in cold water, so cold that it hurt to the bone, and even my heart stopped beating.
Now, Li Ying'an is the person I trust the most. I cannot keep this secret in my heart. As long as I hide it, the cats related to Sui Yusheng nearby will be in more danger.
Let me start from the welfare home: In the welfare home, I not only saw Li Lan, but also saw Sui Yusheng, the adopted son of Deng Yu, who was often with Wen Liangxi and my colleague.
Li Ying'an didn't suddenly realize it. He hesitated for a moment and asked blankly, "Why is he there?"
I continued: Sui Yusheng went to the orphanage to deliver cats, and these cats had already been given to a group of beggars. From their conversation, I roughly guessed that they wanted to use these cats to attract kind-hearted children and achieve their abduction goals.
Li Ying'an realized the seriousness of the problem: "So Sui Yusheng also knows the real secret behind the orphanage?"
I shook my head.
I am not denying this statement. I really don't understand this issue. I also don't know whether Sui Yusheng knew about the illegal activities behind the welfare home. When I saw him in the welfare home, he just went to deliver cats and did nothing else. It is not clear whether he participated in this crime, but cat abuse is certain.
I brought up this matter with Li Ying'an not just for the welfare home, my focus was on exposing the abuse of cats.
This person is Sui Yusheng, who was identified by Sui Jiangbao.
Thinking back to that bloody room, I always felt that there was a familiar breath in it. Somehow, it was this breath that forced me to wake up from my sleep, allowing me to see the layout of the room, and also made me clearly realize the mistakes I made in the past, and that the good guy I firmly believed in turned out to be a bad guy.
This fact that subverts my cognition is really hard for me to accept for a while, but I must realize that the fact has already happened and Sui Yusheng has successfully confirmed his identity as a cat abuser.
Li Ying'an immediately addressed my concerns: "But you can't prove it as a cat. You don't have any evidence."
That's right, I have no evidence to prove to the public that Sui Yusheng is a psychopathic cat abuser. I can't turn into a cat in front of the public, I will be caught and sent to the laboratory.
Li Ying'an thought for a moment and offered a hint: "Then can you still remember where that house is, roughly where it is?"
I shook my head, my brain still trying desperately to recall the past.
I was so frightened at the time that I didn't even remember the path Sui Yusheng took me out of the room. He still had a piece of cloth covering the cage, so I could only vaguely guess from the gap that the room was upstairs. Sui Yusheng didn't take the elevator, but took the stairs. When we reached the ground floor, I saw the lobby was decorated in a bright golden color, surrounded by flowers and plants...
I didn't see the decoration outside the building very clearly, so I don't remember it very clearly. I was scared at the time and just wanted to get close to Li Ying'an to get warmth, so I didn't care about the surrounding environment at all.
I feel a little annoyed with myself, but I won't blame myself because this is the instinctive reaction of every animal. No one can remain calm after seeing the broken body of a companion. I am mentally normal and it is a great thing that I didn't get scared crazy by that scene.
"In that case," Li Ying'an said, "we can look for clues from Sui Jiangbao, who also suspects him."
My thoughts were stretched. If Sui Jiangbao had spoken so decisively to Deng Yu that night, he must have caught Sui Yusheng by the tail and discovered some evidence against her.
But……
I looked into Li Ying'an's eyes, and there was helplessness in them: I don't know where Sui Jiangbao is.
Since Li Ying'an made this suggestion, it means he has already thought of a solution: "Let's go to work early tomorrow and meet Sui Jiangbao's mother. I will chat with her then."
