Chapter 64
"Another small cake, please," Wen Liangxi, who had just handed over the order, suddenly stopped the waiter and made another request, "My friend likes this cake."
The waiter marked the cake and then left with a smile.
Back in a world just the two of us, Wen Liangxi continued the same gesture and smiled, "Why did you suddenly want to find me today? Do you want to explain something to me?"
I looked at him without blinking: Why kill Sui Yusheng?
Wen Liangxi seemed extremely tired. With a sigh, his eyes shifted to the corner of the table. "Why are we talking about death right now? I thought you would first give me an explanation for reporting me for murder... Well, since you want to know the answer to this question so badly, I'll tell you."
Having said that, he fell silent, and his provocative gaze moved to the potted green plant on the windowsill and never moved away.
My gaze followed his pause. The pot of green plant was bathed in soft sunlight, and was made more vibrant by the scenery outside the window. It was reasonable for me to take a few more glances at it.
Suddenly, he changed the subject and turned to look at me: "Do you like the little cake I ordered?"
I frowned in confusion, then nodded slowly.
My answer seemed to hit the mark exactly what Li Ying'an wanted. He raised the corners of his lips in a faint smile, stood up from his seat, walked over to my side, bent down, and placed his hands on the arms of my chair, trapping me in this slightly uncomfortable chair. I was forced to look up and stare at him vigilantly, not daring to be distracted for a moment.
He leaned over, his hot and moist breath spraying near my ear: "From what I understand, kittens should eat less sweets."
If my face was made of glass, Wen Liangxi's words would be like a hammer, smashing it hard, tearing my face into pieces and shattering my expression uncontrollably.
I almost instantly showed a look of fear and dread.
He leaned back slightly, away from me, his eyes admiring my ever-changing face from top to bottom, and then laughed, "I was right. Don't you think it's incredible?"
I found it extremely difficult to accept that my identity was exposed by Wen Liangxi. My mind was in a mess and I didn't even want to continue with the task assigned to me by the police. I just wanted to escape from this devilish place. I didn't want to be seen through by Wen Liangxi again. It was like being stripped naked and thrown into the street in his eyes.
I wanted to stand up from my seat, but Wen Liangxi, who was blocking my way, refused to give in. He pushed me down, gently warned me to sit quietly, and took out a bug from my pocket.
Seeing the eavesdropping device in the cloth bag being taken away by someone, I wanted to snatch it away. However, although Wen Liangxi looked thin and weak, he was stronger than me, and no matter how I acted, I couldn't get it back.
He held the eavesdropping device between his fingertips and shushed me, "Don't do anything meaningless to make me angry, otherwise I don't mind letting everyone present see a bloody scene."
His words made me regret not following Li Ying'an's advice.
I was afraid that he would do something bad to me, so I obeyed his orders and waited motionlessly for the food to be served.
Seeing this, he patted my shoulder and said with a smile, "You are so good."
After getting the bug, he walked to the service desk, took a small hammer and smashed the thing into pieces. Then he walked to a trash can outside and threw the debris in.
About two minutes had passed when he came back. After he sat down, I followed the direction of his finger and looked at the passers-by standing on the roadside outside the window. My heart couldn't help but tremble.
"Is that man a policeman?" he said to me with a smile.
In fact, I didn’t know how many plainclothes officers there were, let alone what they looked like, but when I entered the restaurant, I noticed this man and guessed his identity.
I shook my head at him, indicating that I really didn't know.
He didn't care whether my words were true or not. He looked away indifferently and poured himself a cup of hot tea.
"Whether he is or not, it doesn't matter."
He poured me a cup as well, and considerately pushed it in front of me, then raised his own cup to offer me tea. "They have no evidence of murder, so there's no way they can arrest me. The only evidence I have has now been destroyed, so all they can do is protect your safety. But it doesn't matter. Even if there was evidence, I still wouldn't sentence you to death as you wish."
He finished his speech with a lingering feeling, then sipped his hot tea. After putting down the cup, he leaned back calmly with his arms folded. "Curious, huh?"
The way he acted, I knew he wasn't lying.
"My parents are doctors," he said, casually chatting with me as if he were just chatting about family matters. "They've saved countless lives and have many friends. Whether they come from rich or poor, wealthy or powerful, they all know a few. One of my mother's good friends is a police officer who works in the Municipal Public Security Bureau. He's a high-ranking official. Of course, he has no obligation to take care of me, but my mother has an older brother, my uncle, who works in the city. Do you understand?"
I couldn't help but tremble, his words made me feel so cold.
Although his parents are not with him all year round, he is the only son in the family after all, so he will never be wronged.
"So, what can I do..." He smiled, tilted his head to look at the plainclothes policeman who had moved outside the window, raised his cup and offered him tea with a provocative smile, and finally sneered.
Since he is so unscrupulous in his publicity, there is no need for me to flatter him any more. We can now completely tear off our facades and reveal our true selves.
I suppressed my anger and waited for the waiter to bring all the food. I watched Wen Liangxi politely chatting with the waiter, which made the girl smile shyly.
After all the irrelevant people left the table, I ruthlessly poured the tea he handed me into the trash can beside the table, and then threw the empty cup heavily on the table: Why do you want to kill people!
Wen Liangxi had already noticed my series of angry movements. He asked nonchalantly, "Who are you asking about?"
He actually pretended to be ignorant in front of me when he knew the truth. I suppressed the anger burning in my heart and told him the disgusting name.
"You heard it too, didn't you? He was very willing to be a lamb to be slaughtered in my hands, and I fulfilled his wish."
I wanted to slam the table and say: You are killing people to silence them!
"So what?" Perhaps my current appearance was a joke in Wen Liangxi's eyes. Ever since he forcibly took away my bug, his smile hadn't faded. "He's done so many illegal and criminal things for me. He knows most of my secrets. What's the harm in me protecting myself and silencing him? Besides, he likes me. Don't you find it disgusting? I find ordinary women filthy, and I find a man from a trafficking village even more disgusting and filthy."
It turns out that Sui Yusheng also knew his own life experience, and he told Wen Liangxi all of it without any reservations, which was enough to show that he was indeed loyal to Wen Liangxi, so loyal that it was terrifying.
It is said that the dead are the greatest. Since Sui Yusheng is gone, there is no point in mentioning him in front of Wen Liangxi. Although the mistakes he made are too numerous to list, they are still small compared to Wen Liangxi: That is not a reason for you to kill him. He should be handed over to the law for punishment. Since he can tell you all this, it means that he will not betray you and trusts you, but you killed him.
Wen Liangxi chuckled. "Why, are you feeling sorry for him? Do you think he deserves pity? People like him shouldn't have been born into this world. His mother was abducted by criminals and forced to give birth to him by evil people. People like him should just die because they shouldn't have been here in the first place."
I was stunned for a moment, and then as if something had been touched on my reverse scale, I stood up from my seat in an instant and glared at him: You are talking nonsense!
I still wanted to argue with him, but suddenly at a certain moment I thought that Wen Liangxi was right. Such children are not recognized by the mother. If there is a chance to abort them, they will never be born into this world.
Whenever I think of the attitude of Li Ying'an's grandparents and mother towards him, my heart aches, as if the damned child that Wen Liangxi was talking about, the child who was forced to be born, was Li Ying'an.
I don’t know how I sat down. I only know that my eyes are empty and my heart is dead because of the words.
"Why don't you refute it? Then I am right."
I shook my head, denying his suggestion. Not everyone is born with bad genes like Sui Yusheng. Li Ying'an wasn't one of those people. He would earnestly pursue an education, help his mother, trapped in the village for over a decade, return home, adopt me and lovingly care for me, and work day and night just to find a home for him and me...
He is a very good person. He is a good bamboo shoot grown among bad bamboos. He is not a cruel and vicious person.
Wen Liangxi didn't know Li Ying'an's background, so he was not interested in my shaking of the head, nor did he want to hear my rebuttal. He just said "It's up to you" and changed the subject.
"What else are you interested in?" he said, busy putting the dishes he was interested in into the bowl in front of him. "If you don't want to ask, don't ask me. I'm hungry and need to eat."
Before eating, he looked up at me and saw that there were no chopsticks on my table, so he took out a pair from the chopstick holder, closed them up considerately, and placed them on my cup.
I didn't accept his kindness, put the chopsticks back, took another pair from there, and slammed them hard on the table again, shaking the water in the cup.
Wen Liangxi chewed his food with a hint of displeasure on his face.
I brought up a heavy topic: Where is my little orange?
He raised an eyebrow at me. "Dead. I have to say that beast is very tenacious. Sui Yusheng tortured it for a long time but couldn't kill it. In the end, he could only dissect it and upload the video online."
He spoke lightly, but I felt an unbearable chill and pain. I sprang to my feet, the slap so swift that no one could see how it landed on Wen Liangxi's delicate face. There was only a crisp sound, and his fair cheek quickly became red from my blow. He tilted his head, and any smile was wiped away by my hand.
Turning my head again, I could clearly see his sinister eyes. Those blue eyes were like the suffocating tranquility on the vast ocean before a winter storm, with undisguised resentment surging in them. They stared straight at me, and when the conspiracy was revealed, they were no longer noble, but instead revealed calculation.
I thought I was a little impulsive and couldn't help but step back.
I ignored the looks from the other people and returned to my seat.
Fortunately, Wen Liangxi was not as cruel as I had imagined. He did not tear out my tendons and bones in public. He just took the ice pack handed to me by the waiter and applied it to my face without saying a word.
After a while, he chuckled in anger: "I've never been slapped or even beaten since I was a child. Now I'm making an exception here..." He paused, threw the ice pack on the table, and said in a light tone, but warned me, "Don't let me see you when you're in a bad mood in the future, otherwise..."
He did not continue speaking, but seemed to be thinking about something.
He stood up and closed the door of the private room.
"But speaking of your little orange friend, I'm actually interested in something else you don't know. Want to hear about it?"
He suddenly did a complete 360-degree turn, returning to his previous smiling attitude, playing with the ice pack and smiling at me.
Of course I'm interested in things I don't know.
"The police dug up two bodies in that grave." His fingertips loosened the ice pack, his eyes catching mine. "Right?"
