Chapter 10 Chapter 10 The Second Wish
When Jinglin was about three years old, he discovered that he was different from other children.
"Don't play with those kids," the father said. "Don't waste your time on worthless people."
The ball in his hand was knocked to the ground and rolled around. Jinglin was pulled into the car. Outside the car window, the children were getting farther and farther away from him.
"Sit up straight, pay attention to your hand gestures, and keep your legs straight."
"Don't laugh, be quiet, and don't act so stupid."
"This is the new equestrian coach I found for you. Study hard and don't let me down."
What is a valuable person.
"You're going to meet Uncle Gong tomorrow. You should know what to do to leave a good impression on him."
"This is Gong Yuan, he's the same age as you, come play together."
"Linlin, you have to do better. Everything that Dad and I have will be yours from now on."
At the International Children's Piano Competition, Jinglin, wearing a neat suit and holding a gorgeous trophy, stood at the center of the stage. His bow tie clung tightly to his neck, and the lights were so bright that he couldn't see the faces of the audience.
Standing next to him was the second place winner, a cheerful little fat boy. Jinglin remembered that passionate and inspiring music could burst out from his chubby fingers.
"Why aren't you happy?" The little fat boy looked at him curiously. "You won first place. That's amazing."
Jing Lin had a blank expression on his face: "There's nothing to be happy about."
Despite this, eight-year-old Jinglin still longed for his parents' praise. After the competition, he sat in the car, and the driver said they were on a business trip. Jinglin put the trophy in the cabinet. A whole row of golden trophies didn't earn him a single word of praise or a hug.
Jinglin deserves the first place.
No matter which field, Jinglin must be the best one.
But Gong Yuan is different.
Jinglin held the tennis racket. He had already won two games and didn't want to play anymore. He walked to the edge of the court. Gong Yuan was sitting unsteadily in the stands, wrapped up tightly, not a single inch of skin exposed to the sun.
"Do you want to come together?" Jinglin asked.
Gong Yuan raised his eyes. His pupils were particularly dark and his face was particularly pale, giving off an unusually cold feeling.
"I'm not feeling well." Gong Yuan smiled weakly, "I can't run."
Gong Yuan seemed to have an extremely rare disease that could not be cured even with the Gong family's wealth, and he could only be kept alive by medication. The Gong family therefore loved this child very much and had no expectations for him, only wishing him to be healthy and happy.
But Jinglin knew that he was a very smart person. In Gong Yuan's study were books that a child of his age would never come into contact with. Gong Yuan could not go out and spent most of his time reading in the house. He rarely went to school and lacked some common sense.
In this circle, Gong Yuan was not the only one of his peers. His parents introduced him to many friends, but in the end, he could only chat with Gong Yuan.
They are the same kind.
His parents were happy with his relationship with Gong Yuan, and even said, "It would be great if Xiao Yuan was a girl. We could become relatives with the Gong family."
When he was in the third year of junior high school, he rejected his parents' plan to send him abroad and was admitted to No. 10 Middle School, the school with the highest admission rate in the province. Jinglin signed an agreement with his parents that if he could not maintain the first place, he would have to follow the route planned by his parents.
His life was a smooth road that had already been planned.
After entering high school, when he was with Gong Yuan, he would occasionally talk about his high school life.
"I heard that campus is a place where love can easily happen. There must be a lot of people who like you." Gong Yuan supported his chin. His fingers were so white and thin that one would almost suspect they would make the sound of jade colliding.
"No."
Gong Yuan laughed uncontrollably at this answer, then coughed violently. Jing Lin reluctantly helped him breathe. After Gong Yuan recovered, he stared at him for a moment and asked, "Do you regret rebelling against your parents?"
He was referring to the agreement.
"I will win."
Jinglin is the first.
Jinglin must always be number one.
"Besides, I never intended to rebel against them."
Everything he has was given by his parents, and he knows how many people envy him.
Gong Yuan gave a shy smile: "I envy you so much. I want to go too, but unfortunately I'm not in good health, so I can only listen to the stories you tell me."
Not long after this conversation, Gong Yuan suffered an accident. Jing Lin had visited him at the time, and Gong Yuan lay in bed, as light and blank as a sheet of paper. Rumors circulated that Gong Yuan might not make it, but he eventually awoke, and in better health than before. His terminal illness had miraculously vanished, though he had difficulty remembering some people and events when he first woke up. However, his memory later returned.
After that, Gong Yuan came to No. 10 Middle School.
…
After thoroughly considering the opinions of the three, the head teacher decided to form a mutual aid study group with Jinglin, Li Shanyue, and Gong Yuan. Since there were already 41 students in the class, this allocation was appropriate.
The three people had subtle expressions, and even System 05 felt that the situation was too complicated.
But nothing unexpected happened afterward, because all three of them loved studying so much! Jinglin, to maintain his top spot, spent even more time studying than before. Li Shanyue's efforts were obvious, but Gong Yuan, on the other hand, put in an unexpected amount of effort, perhaps because his monthly exam results were a real blow to him.
The three of them formed a study group that created the most intense learning atmosphere in the entire class. Other students who passed by would take a detour, not daring to approach this sacred learning area. Jing Lin would help Li Shanyue and Gong Yuan with their questions, and in this respect, he was truly conscientious. Once the questions were solved, they would work furiously on the papers, even giving the impression of competing against each other.
...This must be an illusion. What on earth are they competing for?
The classmates could clearly feel the atmosphere between them. Gradually, when the three of them appeared together more and more frequently and studied around a table, the classmates tacitly regarded them as a small circle.
Gong Yuan pushed the test paper over and pointed at the question on it: "How do you do this question?"
Jinglin took out the textbook and turned to a page. Gong Yuan glanced at it, nodded in sudden realization, took back the test paper and textbook, and studied it on his own.
Li Shanyue also pushed her paper over. Jing Lin took a look and said, "The genetic engineering questions aren't very difficult. Just understand the questions."
Li Shanyue had studied with him for a long time, and she became very open about the problem: "I don't understand it."
Jinglin: "I'll read with you."
"The regulatory sequence upstream of the human γ gene promoter contains a BCL11A protein binding site. When this site binds to the BCL11A protein, the expression of the γ gene is inhibited. By altering the sequence of this binding site and relieving the inhibition of γ gene expression, gene therapy for certain thalassemias could be performed."
"The first question in this exam is which protein can inhibit gene expression, and the nature of gene regulation..."
Jinglin said it wasn't difficult, but he ended up talking for nearly thirty minutes. He spoke very thoroughly, and after listening, Li Shanyue sincerely thanked him.
"Genetic engineering is a key and difficult topic, and the chances of it appearing on the test this year are very high, so it's best to learn it thoroughly." Jing Lin added, "Most importantly, these questions are within your capabilities. They simply provide a complex-sounding background to test your reading comprehension and logical reasoning."
"You have to believe in yourself. These problems are solvable for you."
Li Shanyue was stunned for a moment, then hummed in a sullen voice. He glanced at Gong Yuan, who had already solved the previous problem and moved on to the next one.
They have been a team for nearly a month. What surprised him the most was Gong Yuan. Gong Yuan's foundation was extremely poor, so poor that people suspected that he had not received compulsory education and did not even know the most basic common sense.
However, he learned very quickly, had a photographic memory, and had no difficulty in understanding. When he asked Jinglin a question, Jinglin basically only needed to tell him which page of the textbook it was, and he would figure it out on his own. Li Shanyue thought that only Jinglin could tutor him like this. From the perspective of improving his grades alone, choosing Jinglin to tutor Gong Yuan was completely right.
After just one month, Gong Yuan started asking some medium-difficulty questions, and the questions became less and less frequent. Jing Lin also only needed to open the textbook and he could solve the problems by himself.
On the contrary, it was Li Shanyue who needed Jinglin to spend more time explaining.
Jinglin's explanations are always detailed and patient. He even teaches according to the students' abilities and can easily solve Li Shanyue's long-standing doubts.
There was a rustling sound in her ears, which was the sound of the pen tip rubbing against the paper. Li Shanyue pursed her lips, calmed down, and continued to do the questions.
Jinglin and Gongyuan were very smart, and he knew early on that he wasn't from the same world as them. All he could do was focus on improving himself and not overthinking.
With midterm exams approaching, Li Shanyue stayed in the classroom after school instead of going home. When he looked up from his test paper, he noticed the sound of rain outside. Li Shanyue didn't have an umbrella and planned to study a little longer until the rain stopped, but the downpour intensified, pouring down in torrents.
Li Shanyue stood at the foot of the teaching building, worried. "Why don't I just stay home today? I'll use my rest card and stay in the classroom all night studying." Anyway, his father wouldn't care what time he came home.
System 05: [Your body is very tired and needs a real rest.]
[Why is it raining? The weather forecast didn’t mention it…]
System 05 silently produced a physical item card. All physical cards were expensive, as they would affect the world itself, but it couldn't leave the host home in the rain. It was difficult to call a taxi at this hour. System 05 was about to swipe the item [Umbrella] when she saw someone approaching from the corner.
Jinglin held an umbrella in his hand and asked, "Why haven't you gone home yet?"
System 05 immediately took back his own prop card.
After a month of getting along, Jinglin's favorability towards Li Shanyue increased to 25.
Li Shanyue: "I wanted to stay a little longer, but it started raining."
Jing Lin was silent for a moment, then handed him his umbrella. "A driver will come to pick me up later. You can take it."
