Downstairs, Chu Xingbang was reading the newspaper, while Quan Yicheng and Aunt Tian went to buy groceries.
"Happy birthday, Yueyue." Chu Xingbang smiled kindly.
Li Xiyue ran downstairs, went to the old man's side, and hugged his arm. "Thank you, Grandpa Chu."
"You're welcome, you're welcome. Do you like the gift I gave you?"
"I like it, but it's too expensive."
Chu Xingbang chuckled and said, "It's nothing. When you get married, Grandpa will give you his most treasured possession."
Wow.
Even Chu Xingbang said it was a treasure, so it must be very valuable.
Li Xiyue smiled so broadly that her eyes disappeared from her grin.
Knowing they had plans, Chu Xingbang didn't waste any more time and told them to hurry up and leave, and come back early for dinner.
The family car was taken by Quan Yicheng to buy groceries, so Chu Xun took Li Xiyue out in a military jeep.
"Grandpa."
Upon arriving at the sanatorium, Li Xiyue rushed towards Liao Qingshan, who was practicing Tai Chi.
"Yueyue, why are you here again? Are you going back to the countryside?" Liao Qingshan hugged his granddaughter, remembering that she had come to see him just before going back to the countryside.
Li Xiyue shook her head. "No, Grandpa, have you forgotten what day it is today?"
"Of course I haven't forgotten, today is my precious Yueyue's birthday." Liao Qingshan had been counting down the days, but it was all in vain, he couldn't go out to celebrate his granddaughter's birthday.
He never expected that his granddaughter would come looking for him.
"Come inside quickly, it's cold outside." Liao Qingshan pulled Li Xiyue inside, ignoring Chu Xun completely.
Chu Xun was used to it, so he decided to go see Chu Ruilin first and let the grandfather and grandson talk alone.
"Oh my, my Yueyue has grown up, she's grown into a beautiful young lady. Look how pretty she is!" Inside the house, Liao Qingshan pulled Li Xiyue aside and looked her over, praising her endlessly.
Li Xiyue said playfully, "Grandpa, I'm nineteen this year."
"Time flies. When you first came to me, you were just over two years old, so tiny. You always followed me quietly. If I wasn't paying attention, I could kick you over if I turned around. Back then, you would cry and burrow into my arms, calling me 'Mom,' and you would get me all covered in tears and snot."
Li Xiyue was quite embarrassed, "What?!"
“I taught you to call me ‘Grandpa’ over and over again, and then you stopped calling me ‘Mom’, but you just couldn’t remember the ‘Grandpa’ part. You kept calling me ‘Grandpa’ all the time…”
"Pfft—" Li Xiyue burst out laughing, "Really?"
Was she really that clueless when she was little?
"When you got a little older, you finally learned to call me Grandpa, but you were stubborn. When I asked you to study medicine, you complained that it was too tiring. When I asked you to practice Tai Chi, you refused to get up early and often cursed me behind my back as an old man."
Li Xiyue protested, "Nonsense, I didn't do it, Grandpa, you're slandering me."
She swore that she might have been a bit dim-witted as a child, but she was definitely not immoral.
Liao Qingshan looked at him with an expression that said, "How could I have misremembered?" and continued to reminisce about the past, "I watched you grow up day by day, from this height to this height, and now you're so big. How time flies so fast. In the blink of an eye, my Yueyue has become a young lady."
"Grandpa..." Li Xiyue hugged him, "Thank you."
Thank you for raising me, teaching me medicine, loving and cherishing me, and treating me like your precious darling.
In this world, besides her deceased mother, the person who loved her the most was her maternal grandfather; even Chu Xun had to take a backseat.
With tears in his eyes, Liao Qingshan said, "What are you thanking me for? Your safe growth into adulthood is my greatest hope and the best way to repay me. If your mother knew this in the afterlife, she could rest in peace."
