"Zhao Xiaoli, what are you doing inside with the door locked? Open the door!"
Huang Xinrui struggled to carry more than 50 kilograms of grain back to the educated youth settlement, but when she got back to the dormitory, she found that the door was locked from the inside.
Zhao Xiaoli was hiding under the covers, trembling all over. "Don't grab me!"
"What's wrong with you?" Huang Xinrui pounded on the door when she saw that she wouldn't open it. "Open the door, I need to go in and put something down."
Zhao Xiaoli, who was under the covers, trembled even more violently.
"If you don't open the door, I'm going to call the vice-captain!" Huang Xinrui threatened.
Upon hearing the words "vice captain," Zhao Xiaoli screamed in terror, "No, don't arrest me!"
"Are you crazy?!" Huang Xinrui exclaimed, slumping to the ground. "Are you doing this on purpose? Are you deliberately preventing me and Yueyue from going in? Let me tell you, when Yueyue comes back, she'll have plenty of ways to deal with you!"
Why was she so unlucky to be assigned to the same rural area as a lunatic like Zhao Xiaoli? Zhao Xiaoli was shameless and never learned her lesson. No matter how much others scolded her, she would immediately forget it and continue to court disaster.
She really couldn't do anything about Zhao Xiaoli, so she could only wait for Yueyue to come back and deal with Zhao Xiaoli.
The noise outside subsided, and the room gradually quieted down as well. Zhao Xiaoli slowly regained her composure. No one knew what she had done; if she struck first, wouldn't that...?
With this thought in mind, she threw off the covers, got out of bed, and opened the door.
Huang Xinrui turned her head and cursed, "Are you trying to die? Are you keeping the door closed in broad daylight so that maggots can rotting inside?"
"None of your business!" Zhao Xiaoli retorted and walked away quickly.
Huang Xinrui was so angry that she swung a few punches at her back, but she didn't dare to actually fight back. She had never fought anyone before and couldn't get over that mental hurdle.
She cursed a few times and angrily carried the things into the house. Just then, Li Xiyue returned. She quickly said with a mournful face, "Yueyue, you're finally back! You have no idea how heavy all this grain is. My hands are about to break."
"I'm sorry, it's my fault for making you carry so much grain back all by yourself." Li Xiyue took a bag of fine grains out of her basket. "Take this, consider it a token of my gratitude."
It must have been really difficult for her, a delicate young girl, to carry back more than fifty kilograms of grain from such a far distance all by herself.
Huang Xinrui shook her head, "This is all the fine grains you have, I can't accept it. How about you give me a few sweet potatoes, I love them."
“Okay, take as many as you want, it’s up to you,” Li Xiyue said generously.
Huang Xinrui took two and put them into her basket, looking very pleased with herself.
The two put the grain into the cupboard, and before they could even tidy up, a boy called out from outside, "Sister Li, my grandma asked me to come and call you to our house for dinner."
Knowing that it was Grandma Yu who had sent her grandson to call them to dinner, the two quickly left the room.
"Uncle Lao Liu, how's the cow?" Xu Guoqiang asked impatiently as he put his hands on his hips and fed the cow medicine.
Xu Laoliu was a few years older than Xu Laosan, almost sixty years old. His hair and beard were gray, but he had a ruddy complexion, bright eyes, and nimble hands and feet. He looked even more energetic than Xu Laosan.
After administering the medicine, he replied, "Thanks to the timely stopping of the bleeding and the application of medicine to the wound, as long as the inflammation is treated on time and the wound is kept from getting infected, my life can be saved."
"What about the hooves?" Xu Guoqiang asked again.
Xu Laoliu washed his hands at the water vat in the yard, and then went to dry the herbs. "Although there was a lot of bleeding, the wound is not very deep. The treatment was timely, and as long as it is well cared for, there will be no major problems."
Xu Guoqiang was completely relieved. "Uncle Lao Liu, I'm entrusting the ox to you. Please take good care of it, and I'll give you a big reward."
"Stop with the nonsense." Old Xu skillfully took out the herbs and placed them on the winnowing basket, glancing at the young man helping him cut the herbs. "Besides, it's not all my doing."
If it weren't for the timely hemostasis and medication, even if he had managed to save his life, he wouldn't have been able to save his leg.
Xu Guoqiang immediately said, "Of course, Xiangyang and Li Zhiqing also deserve credit."
"Then go back, don't make a fuss here, it'll disturb the cow's rest." Old Xu waved to him.
Xu Guoqiang and his men left happily.
As they left the hospital, Xu Guoqiang glanced at Xu Dawei, who was still dripping wet, and said irritably, "Aren't you going back to change your clothes? Who's going to keep an eye on our first squad if you're sick?"
"Yes, Captain, I'll go back and change right away. I won't be late for work this afternoon." Xu Dawei quickly replied, knowing that he wasn't angry with him after hearing this.
Xu Guoqiang shook his head helplessly. Seeing that it was already noon, he dusted himself off and went back to eat.
After everyone had left, Xu Laoliu walked up to Xu Xiangyang and asked, "Does that girl really know acupuncture?"
“Looks a bit better than you.” Xu Xiangyang glanced at him and said expressionlessly while continuing to cut the herbs.
Hearing this, Xu Laoliu was not angry at all. Instead, his old eyes lit up. "She's even better than me? That's great. Bring her to me next time, and I'll see just how capable she really is."
"I won't take her. Go find her yourself," Xu Xiangyang refused directly.
Xu Laoliu raised his hand to pinch his ear, but then withdrew it after thinking of something. He sat down on another stool for cutting herbs, picked up the herbs from his basket and started cutting them. “People are different. Take the people in our village, for example. Some are hardworking, some are lazy, some are honest, and some are cunning… The female educated youth are the same. Not all of them are what you think.”
Xu Xiangyang chuckled and increased the force with which he cut the herbs.
Seeing his stubbornness, Xu Laoliu didn't try to persuade him anymore, sighed, and continued working.
When Xu Dawei got home, he saw Zhao Xiaoli standing at his door, seemingly waiting for him. He was holding back his anger when he opened his mouth and cursed, "Where the hell have you been? You didn't even go to collect your grain. Don't you want it anymore? Damn it, none of you can give me a moment's peace!"
Zhao Xiaoli's face flushed red and then turned pale as she was scolded, but remembering her purpose, she straightened her back and said, "Vice Captain, I want to report something!"
