"It was her who did it. I thought she was different from the other female educated youths when I saw her save the cow, but now it seems they are all the same kind of people."
"That's right, she probably saved the cow because she was afraid someone would find out that she was the one who threw the glass into the field."
"You can know a person's face but not their heart; I misjudged her."
Li Xiyue's principle is to refrain from commenting without knowing the whole story, but others are not like her; most are foolish people who believe everything they hear.
Li Xiyue didn't bother to explain to them and went straight into her office.
Xu Guoqiang, Xu Dawei, and the team committee members were all inside.
Zhao Xiaoli stood smugly next to Xu Dawei, casting a victorious glance at Li Xiyue.
Li Xiyue thought to herself, "They're already getting cocky? The outcome is still uncertain."
Before Xu Guoqiang could speak, Xu Dawei said impatiently, "Li Zhiqing, Zhao Zhiqing reported that you deliberately threw glass into the field, injuring the oxen. The evidence is complete. What do you have to say for yourself?"
Li Xiyue examined the evidence on the table; it was indeed her canned food, along with the broken glass from the can. She then asked, "Who is the witness?"
“Of course it’s me.” Zhao Xiaoli raised her chin.
Li Xiyue asked calmly, "When did you see me throwing glass into the field?"
“Last night.” Zhao Xiaoli had already prepared her answer in her mind: “In the middle of the night, I got up to go to the outhouse and found that you were not there. You must have thrown the glass into the field at that time.”
Li Xiyue was indeed not there last night, but she knew that Zhao Xiaoli hadn't gotten up to go to the bathroom at all.
The glass wasn't thrown into the field last night; it was thrown in this morning.
It was when she and Huang Xinrui went with Wang Jiaxing to find Xu Guoqiang that Zhao Xiaoli stole her canned food and threw it into the field.
To be honest, Zhao Xiaoli really doesn't learn her lesson. Even after being so ruthless, Zhao Xiaoli still dared to steal her things.
However, Zhao Xiaoli wasn't entirely stupid. She knew that Huang Xinrui had spent the whole day with her, and if she had witnesses to prove that Huang Xinrui threw the things away, she wouldn't be able to accuse her.
She said she was asleep by midnight last night, so no one can vouch for her, and she's destined to take the blame.
"What? Speechless now?" Zhao Xiaoli said smugly when she saw Li Xiyue remain silent. "Just admit it."
"She really did it."
"Her silence means she agrees."
"How vicious, to do such a heinous thing."
"Captain, don't let her off easily."
"Yes, let her live in the cowshed and carry manure."
The villagers outside were in an uproar.
Xu Guoqiang roared, "What's all this commotion? The matter hasn't been investigated yet, what are you shouting about?"
“Captain, we have all the witnesses and evidence, and she has already admitted it herself. What more do we need to investigate?” Xu Dawei said, glaring at Li Xiyue.
He had to make Li Xiyue, that vicious villain, pay a heavy price, otherwise he wouldn't be able to quell his anger.
Xu Guoqiang glanced at Xu Dawei, knowing exactly what he was thinking. But Li Xiyue had saved the cow and her own mother, after all. He didn't think she was a malicious person, and he didn't want to wrong an innocent person.
He asked Li Xiyue, "Li Zhiqing, do you have anything else to say?"
“Captain, it wasn’t me,” Li Xiyue said slowly. “I didn’t even get up last night.”
Upon receiving the news, Wang Jiaxing rushed over and said, "Captain, I've always been a light sleeper and I wake up at the slightest noise. No one left the women's dormitory last night. Zhao is lying."
Li Xiyue gave Wang Jiaxing a grateful look, and then said, "The glass wasn't thrown into the field last night, it was this morning. The person who threw the glass wasn't me, it was Zhao Xiaoli. She's the one crying wolf!"
