Huang Xinrui nodded and continued working.
Li Xiyue went to start the fire. The three of them had taken over the kitchen, leaving her with no opportunity to use her skills. The only spot she had was in front of the stove.
Chu Xun put the chicken soup to simmer, wiped his hands, and then went to help knead the dough to make green rice dumplings.
Seeing that he could do everything, Li Xiyue couldn't help but ask curiously, "Brother Chu, who did you learn your cooking skills from?"
“My dad,” Chu Xun replied. “In our family, it’s all the men who cook. My grandpa and my dad are both excellent cooks, but my grandma and my mom can’t cook.”
Huang Xinrui seized the opportunity, saying, "We Yueyue can't cook either."
She would be perfect as your wife.
“I can,” Li Xiyue retorted, “but it won’t taste very good.”
Huang Xinrui said, "In our eyes, you're one of those people who don't know how to do things."
“Exactly,” Wang Jiaxing echoed obsequiously.
Li Xiyue certainly couldn't compete with them in cooking; that wasn't her area of expertise.
"It's okay, I know how to do it," Chu Xun said abruptly.
Huang Xinrui and Wang Jiaxing said in unison, "Yes."
Li Xiyue blushed deeply and ignored them.
With three chefs on site, the food was ready quickly.
A large pot of chicken stew with mushrooms and a large pot of green rice dumplings filled the air with their aroma.
After making the qingtuan (green glutinous rice dumplings), I didn't cook rice anymore.
Li Xiyue and the others sat around the table in the courtyard, their mouths watering just from the aroma.
Chu Xun opened the wine he had brought and poured some for the three of them. "Today we're celebrating Comrade Xiyue passing the exam to become a barefoot doctor. Let's have a drink."
"Such a joyous occasion, we must drink!" Huang Xinrui said with a smile.
Since he couldn't drive after drinking, Deputy Commander Chu would have to stay over, giving him and Yueyue more opportunities to spend time together.
Wang Jiaxing said, "We'll drink less, you two can have a good time."
"Congratulations." The three raised their glasses to congratulate Li Xiyue.
Li Xiyue clinked glasses with them and said, "Thank you."
After drinking a glass of wine, she hurriedly picked up her chopsticks and took a bite of a green glutinous rice ball. It was bittersweet with a faint fragrance, soft and chewy, and extremely delicious.
The three of them picked up some green rice dumplings and ate them, and they were all very satisfied.
"Adding sugar definitely makes it taste much better," Wang Jiaxing said.
He used to make qingtuan without sugar, so they tasted bitter and weren't as delicious as they are now.
Huang Xinrui said with a smug look, "Of course, my mom says that noodles taste better with sugar."
She was the one who suggested adding sugar, so the credit belongs to her.
He picked up the serving chopsticks and put another kind on Li Xiyue's plate. "Yueyue, try this one. The one you ate just now was made of wormwood."
"Okay." Li Xiyue noticed that this one was slightly yellow, unlike the green of the wormwood one. She picked it up and ate it. It wasn't bitter, but sweet and soft. "This one tastes even better."
Seeing that she liked it, Chu Xun said, "Next time I'll bring some red beans. The green rice dumplings will taste even better with some filling."
"Red beans cooked into red bean paste would definitely taste delicious." Li Xiyue nodded repeatedly, "You can also add minced meat."
Huang Xinrui was very excited. "Yueyue, spring plowing is almost over. Let's go up the mountain in a couple of days and pick some wild vegetables to make pancakes and green rice dumplings."
"And mushrooms too." Wang Jiaxing was drinking mushroom soup, so delicious it made his eyebrows fall off. "These mushrooms from the mountains are so fragrant."
"Okay." Li Xiyue took the mushroom soup that Chu Xun handed her, which also contained a large chicken leg. Her eyes crinkled with joy; this was truly a blissful life.
