Wei Shuyao sat next to Caidie. The elders were exchanging toasts and polite words, which were not things for the younger generation to interrupt. So she whispered something in Caidie's ear:
“I heard that you were born a few months earlier than my third sister, so I should call you sister too.”
Normally, Wei Shuyao should call her "cousin," but Wei Shuyao called her "elder sister," which inadvertently shortened the distance between the two. Cai Die began to dislike this fourth younger sister, especially since this was Zhen Zhen'er, her cousin by blood.
So she laughed heartily and said, "Okay, then I'll call you 'little sister' from now on."
"Sister, just call me Yao'er, that's what everyone in the family calls me~"
Wei Shuyao was already in a weak and sickly state, and spoke softly and gently, which was naturally in line with Cai Die's temperament.
"Alright, then I'll call you Yao'er!"
After a few pleasantries that established a closer relationship, Wei Shuyao got down to business: "Sister, you must stay in Shengjing for quite a while this time. I'll take you around to see all the sights, delicious food, and fun things to do in Shengjing!"
At this age, girls are full of curiosity and playfulness about the outside world. After hearing Wei Shuyao's words, Cai Die's heart fluttered, and she immediately replied, "Alright, it's a deal."
These words reassured Wei Shuyao that the mother and daughter were not in a hurry to leave and would likely stay for some time.
After drinking a few cups of wine, Wei Hai started chatting and became even more acquainted with Sun Xingjian. No one expected that the two of them would end up talking about the same thing!
Concerned about Wei Ping's increasingly grim expression, Madam Meng quietly kicked Wei Hai, intending to remind him to restrain himself. However, Wei Hai, still under the influence of alcohol, didn't understand her meaning at all and turned around to look at her with utter astonishment: "Madam, why did you step on my foot?"
"I...I was careless." Meng glanced around at everyone and gave an awkward laugh.
“It’s one thing if you accidentally step on me once or twice, but why did you keep stepping on me like that…” Wei Hai counted on his fingers: “One, two, three…”
Feeling embarrassed, Madam Meng reached out and grabbed Wei Hai's hand, pulling it under the table. She quickly changed the subject, saying, "Master, you're drunk!"
Who in this world would admit to being drunk when they're already drunk? Wei Hai stubbornly retorted, "I'm not drunk!"
"You and your uncle got along very well. There's plenty of time in the future, so there's no need to drink all the wine today," Meng said gently, as if coaxing a child.
Then she turned her gaze to Sun Xingjian, her voice gentle yet carrying a hidden meaning: "I've heard that my uncle's deeds in the army are legendary, but after serving the military governor for so many years and making countless contributions, how come he hasn't gotten a single official position? If you ask me, since you're already in Shengjing, why don't you stay and enjoy life? Why go back to that harsh, cold place to suffer and risk your life without getting any benefits?"
Meng dared to say this because Wei Wenshi had told her yesterday that although Sun Xingjian had a long service in the Wei Rong army and was always by the side of the military governor, he still did not have an official rank.
Meng thought about it and realized that the words were said in a subtle way, which proved that Sun Xingjian was just a follower.
Given this, it was reasonable for her to persuade him to stay and enjoy a comfortable life. He could have enough to eat at home and be served by servants, so why should he go to the border to serve others?
Sun Xingjian merely chuckled indifferently upon hearing this, clearly taking it as womanly naiveté and not taking it to heart. Wei Zheng, however, couldn't remain silent and spoke up to explain:
"Xingjian does not hold a rank in the Weirong Army, but that is because he is a staff officer, the most trusted advisor of the military governor, who can participate in planning and assist in military affairs on a daily basis. Over the years, he has led the Weirong Army to achieve countless merits and made great contributions! Our Wei family can do without him, but the Weirong Army cannot do without him."
Staff officer? Assistant? Although Meng, a woman, did not understand these titles, she could tell that Sun Xingjian was not the follower she had thought he was, but a person who could truly assist the military governor and lead the Wei Rong Army.
He couldn't help but regret the foolish things he had said earlier.
Wei Ping's opinion of Sun Xingjian changed slightly because of these words. Previously, she had thought him a reckless soldier after hearing his grand pronouncements, and she looked down on him. But she never expected that at such a young age, he could earn such a high position in the army through his own abilities.
Looking at Sun Xingjian now, he was tall and imposing, with handsome features and striking eyes. In particular, the dashing spirit unique to soldiers was truly captivating...
And if she remembered correctly, she seemed to have heard Sun Lurong say that her younger brother was still in a poor position.
For some reason, Wei Ping suddenly felt her face flush and her heart race, as if she had a little rabbit in her arms.
Although she was already Cai Die's mother and was five or six years older than Sun Xingjian, what woman in the world doesn't admire a hero?
Madam Wei, with her keen eye, immediately noticed the strange look in her daughter's eyes as she stared at Sun Xingjian. She raised a hand to her forehead and said, "My health is really declining year by year. I only had a small sip of wine today because I was in a good mood, and now I'm feeling dizzy..."
"Then Mother, why don't I ask a doctor to take a look at you?" Wei Zheng said with concern.
Wei Ping then took Wei Wenshi's arm and said, "Mother, why don't you go back to your room and rest for a while?"
"No need for a doctor. Ping'er, just come back to my room with me and we can talk for a while." With that, Madam Wei helped her daughter to her feet and made as if to walk out.
But Wei Ping hesitated as she held her hand, her gaze darting away before finally settling on her own daughter: "Cai Die, quickly help your grandmother back to her room to rest, and give her a good leg massage!"
Cai Die answered "Yes" and got up, took her grandmother from her mother's hands, and helped her outside.
The frown lines between Wei Wenshi's brows deepened, and she realized that Wei Ping wanted to stay. As her mother, she could understand her daughter's thoughts at a glance.
