As Wei Ping remembered correctly, she waited for a short while at the corner before seeing the changing of the guards arrive, replacing the previous two. The bearded guard changed out of his uniform after his shift and left the government office in his own clothes.
Wei Ping followed him at a distance, intending to find an opportunity to talk to him privately again.
This bearded man is a minor leader; once we can persuade him, everything will be easy.
Wei Ping had initially thought she could find his way home, but to her surprise, the bearded man, after finishing his shift, didn't rush home. Instead, he went straight to the gambling den. No woman ever went to a gambling den, so she had to wait outside. About an hour later, the bearded man emerged, fuming and still cursing.
"You just wait, once I get my monthly paycheck, I'll win back double what I lost today!"
Seeing this as an opportunity, Wei Ping stepped forward without hesitation and offered up the two South Sea pearls she had stolen that day: "I'll give you the cost price!"
The bearded man stared at Nanzhu, then at her, and said, "It's you again?!"

The bearded man smacked his lips, then turned and went back to the gambling den.
