Chapter 13: The Attack of the Human-faced Monster Bird

Unable to bear Wayne's urging, Geralt finished his breakfast and set off with him.

However, it is not easy to reach the Ring of Elements in the mountains behind Kaer Morhen. Not only do you have to sail across a lake next to the castle, but you also have to climb a rugged mountain road and pass through a dark cave to get there.

After saying goodbye to their other companions, the two quickly left the castle and came to the lake. Fortunately, due to Wayne's efforts during this period, all the water ghosts by the lake had been killed by him. Without the disturbance of these troublemakers, they quickly found a dilapidated boat and began to swim to the other side of the lake.

After getting on the boat, Wayne adjusted the direction of the sail. Seeing a nostalgic look on Geralt's face, he asked:

"Geralt, what are you thinking about?"

"Judging from your expression, has anything happened here?"

Hearing this, White Wolf reached out his hand and stroked the lake water. He was in a trance for a few seconds before revealing a bitter smile and saying:

"It reminded me of some things in the past."

"Wayne, there are fewer and fewer apprentices being trained in Kaer Morhen now, and many of the previous rules have been abandoned, so you haven't experienced them."

"When I became a demon hunter, the Trial of Green Grass would take the lives of more than 70% of demon hunter apprentices."

"And even if we survive the Green Grass Trial and complete the basic training, we still have to take on a final trial."

"The road we are taking now is the route of the last trial."

Geralt raised his head, looked into Wayne's eyes, and said with some regret: "In the beginning, there were eight apprentices who passed the Green Grass Trial with me, but only four passed the final trial."

"And a year later, the other two also died at the hands of other monsters, leaving only Eskel and I alive."

"So, for many demon hunter apprentices, becoming a demon hunter is a very unfortunate thing."

Wayne was silent after hearing this. By this calculation, there should have been more than twenty children who had trained with Geralt at the beginning, but only less than one-tenth of them survived.

The chances of survival as a demon hunter are really disappointing.

We sailed on the lake for about half an hour and were lucky enough not to encounter any accidents.

However, just after getting off the boat, the two were attacked by a group of about a dozen human-faced monster birds on the river beach on the other side of the lake.

Seeing the group of monsters attacking from the sky, Geralt cast a Quen Sign on himself without saying a word, then picked up the sword and rushed forward.

He dodged and waved his silver sword to fend off the attacks of the flock of human-faced monster birds, but he looked a little embarrassed because there were too many enemies.

Wayne was not reckless. This was the first time he saw a human-faced monster bird, and also the first time he encountered a flying monster.

According to the description in the book, the human-faced monster bird is a hybrid beast with a human face, bird beak, wings and claws. It stinks of rotting corpses and bird droppings. It looks very ugly and likes to make creepy calls.

Their wings are quite flexible, allowing them to turn freely in the air. Their attack method is similar to that of an eagle, using the high speed brought by diving and using their beaks and claws to attack the enemy.

However, due to their deformed body structure, once they land on the ground, they will appear very clumsy and their combat effectiveness will drop sharply.

Thinking of this, Wayne held the sword in his right hand in a defensive posture, and pointed his left finger at a human-faced monster bird flying in the air, making the Axis seal gesture.

As the magic power in his body flowed at a high speed, Wayne drew a magic circle with his left hand and pushed it gently. A flying human-faced monster bird in the sky seemed to be hit by an electric current. Its eyes were dull and its body was stiff and it fell straight down.

It was about ten meters above the ground, and the fall from such a high altitude without any protection broke its wings directly. The severe pain made it roll on all fours and struggle continuously on the ground.

Without words, Geralt seized the opportunity and immediately rolled to the side of the man-faced monster bird. The sharp silver sword pierced its heart directly, easily killing the monster.

After discovering this good idea, Wayne immediately followed suit and released the Axis Sign eight times in a row, successfully cooperating with Geralt to kill eight man-faced harpies.

But even if half of the members were killed, these low-IQ monsters still didn't know what fear and escape were.

Because of the continuous blocking and rolling, the White Wolf's physical strength was consumed a lot and he could no longer defend himself 100%. Several scars were left on his body and face by these human-faced monster birds.

Seeing this, Wayne no longer hesitated and shouted to Geralt: "Geralt, come to my side and lure all the monsters over here."

When White Wolf heard Wayne's shout, he didn't hesitate and immediately used the hilt of his sword to knock away the sharp claws of a human-faced demon bird that was attacking him. Then he rolled backwards and rolled towards Wayne cleanly.

How could the remaining seven or eight human-faced monster birds let go of the prey that was almost at their mouths? Their poor brains didn't even think at all, and they immediately flew towards Geralt instinctively.

At this time, Wayne's Igni Seal had been ready for seven or eight seconds, gathering almost most of the magic power in his body in his hands.

Seeing that Geralt and the monsters behind him had entered his attack range, Wayne shouted.

"Get down now."

The magic power in his hand immediately gushed out towards the monster in the air.

The eighth-level seal can increase Wayne's spell strength by 40%. In addition, his Igni this time almost condenses the mana of seven or eight ordinary seals.

In an instant, a raging orange-red flame burst out from Wayne's palm.

It directly covered the sky about ten meters ahead, wrapping up the remaining seven or eight human-faced monster birds.

The raging flames caused the surrounding air temperature to rise by more than ten degrees.

Along with the monsters' miserable howls, the bodies of those human-faced monster birds were all burned by flames. Their external skin and feathers were burned into charcoal by the high temperature, turning into black charred corpses that fell from the sky.

Geralt got up from the ground and looked at the scene in front of him in shock. White Wolf had only seen such powerful spells in the hands of warlocks. He turned back in disbelief and asked Wayne:

"Are you sure you cast the Igni Sign?"

“Why does it feel completely different from what we use?”

Wayne rubbed his palms which seemed to be burned by the high temperature of the flames, looked at the white wolf innocently and said, "That's right, my knowledge of seals is the same as yours, and was taught by Teacher Vesemir."

"Maybe my talent is a little better than yours."

Hearing this, Geralt took out a bottle of swallow potion and drank it speechlessly, and complained: "This is not a question of you being a little better than me, Wayne."

"Maybe you should be a warlock instead of a witcher fighting with a sword."

Wayne spread his hands and reminded:

"I've already become a demon hunter, what's the point of talking about this now?"

"Why don't we go find the nest of these human-faced monster birds? I've read in a book that they like to collect shiny objects."

"There is a high probability that there will be gold coins, gems or other valuables in their nests."

Hearing about the coins, Geralt stopped dwelling on the previous question and nodded in agreement:

"Yes, I once found several pieces of jewelry in the nest of a human-faced demon bird and exchanged them for hundreds of Auren."

"Since we have to team up to complete missions in the next few years, let's split the spoils 50-50 according to the rules."
