Chapter 22

A green hibiscus stands in the corner of the door, with broad branches and leaves that are almost lifelike.

Why do I say that? A minute ago, Gu Qingyue discovered that this phoenix palm was actually artificial, and the pot was filled with heavy brown nutrient soil.

Gu Qingyue was surprised, but also thankful that Gu Hengsheng hadn't placed the key under the potted plant, but buried it in the nutrient soil. Otherwise, with her strength, she probably wouldn't be able to move this simulated phoenix palm that was almost as tall as her.

Gu Qingyue took the key and thought she should tell him, so she took out her cell phone and sent a message to Gu Hengsheng.

[I got the key, but why did you buy a pot of artificial fern palm?]

Lin Xin looked at the man walking towards her. She hadn't expected someone to be even more handsome than in the photo. He had a handsome, elegant face, long legs, and looked to be about 1.9 meters tall. He also had good taste in clothing. He wore a navy blue suit over a gray crew-neck sweater, the collar of his light gray shirt peeked through. He wore a Rolex Cellini watch on his wrist, exuding a sense of understated elegance.

This is probably a gentle gentleman.

Last night, her boss had sent her a last-minute message asking her to pick someone up at the airport. She was a bit upset about having to work overtime on Saturday, but when she saw the photo of the man her boss had sent her, her initial annoyance instantly vanished. Now, seeing the man's true face, Lin Xin was glad she hadn't acted rashly and turned down the overtime.

"Hello, Mr. Gu, I'm Lin Xin, who's here to pick you up." Lin Xin stepped forward, smiled appropriately, and introduced herself.

As soon as she finished speaking, she stretched out her hand, indicating that she would pull the suitcase for him.

Gu Hengsheng declined and shook his head: "Thank you, I can do it myself."

Lin Xin nodded, maintaining a polite smile, but she thought to herself that this man was indeed a gentleman, and must come from a distinguished family. His manners and speech showed that this wasn't a cultivated upbringing, but rather something he was born with.

For the next five minutes, as they walked toward the parking lot, the man didn't say much. Lin Xin had come across many male professors in their thirties at work. Some of them would throw their suitcases and briefcases at her without waiting for her to speak. Others, in their conversations, seemed condescending, their words permeating a sense of inequality.

Lin Xin took him to the parking lot and got in the car. She told the driver to drive and handed a cup of coffee to Mr. Gu in the back seat. He took off his coat, took it and thanked him.

"You're welcome." Lin Xin smiled again.

Gu Hengsheng took the coffee and placed it on the cup holder beside him. He took out his cell phone, turned it on, and a message popped up on the screen.

[I got the key, but why did you buy a pot of artificial fern palm?]

Simulated phoenix palm?

Gu Hengsheng was a little confused. He thought carefully about whether he had noticed any clues about the phoenix palm when he put the key into the potted plant this morning, but he had no idea at all. He held the phone and sent her a message.

[I didn't realize it was a replica; it was left by the previous landlord.]

Lin Xin observed Gu Hengsheng through the rearview mirror and said, "Mr. Gu, I'll take you to the hotel first. You can rest in the hotel today. If you need anything, you can contact me."

Gu Hengsheng raised his head from his phone screen, looked at her, and smiled: "Okay."

Lin Xin calmed down, turned around and looked at the road conditions ahead.

Gu Hengsheng checked in and placed the cup of coffee on the table. The host had been generous, booking him a suite. He set his suitcase aside and hung his coat on the coat rack. He picked up an upside-down glass, rinsed it under the tap, and filled it with cold water.

He walked into the living room with the cup and took out his cell phone from his pocket. Just as he was about to open his email, a call came in from Gu Qingyue.

"Have you reached Manchester?"

"We're here." Gu Hengsheng sat down on the sofa and asked, "What's going on?"

"My mother is sick," she said, adding, "It's not serious, she just needs a minor operation."

"Are you in the hospital now?" he asked.

There was a ringing sound outside the door. Gu Hengsheng took out his phone and said to Gu Qingyue, "Wait a moment."

Standing outside the door was a hotel staff member, with dinner on a cart. Gu Hengsheng frowned in confusion, and the staff member explained, "That's what Miss Lin ordered for you."

Gu Hengsheng moved aside and asked the waiter to bring dinner into the room.

After the waiter left, Gu Hengsheng closed the door and heard Gu Qingyue ask, "Who is Miss Lin?"

"The staff of the forum meeting here."

"Oh." She asked curiously, "Does it look good?"

"I didn't pay much attention." Gu Hengsheng thought for a moment and said truthfully.

"Why do you ask this?" he asked again with a smile.

"Just curious."

Gu Hengsheng really didn't understand what she was curious about. He smiled and said, "Tell your mother for me that I'll go see her when I return to China."

"Okay, got it."

Gu Qingyue hung up the phone and turned around. Su Xi was standing behind her, leaning against the wall with her arms folded, looking at her with a smile: "Is he your third uncle?"

"Yeah." Gu Qingyue nodded.

"You and your third uncle get along pretty well. I remember you used to hate entertaining those elders the most." Su Xi said.

Gu Qingyue frowned and thought for a moment before saying, "You know, the elders always want to teach us from the perspective of someone who's experienced it, but he won't do that. We're in an equal relationship."

"That sounds interesting." Su Xi nodded.

"Are you leaving?" Gu Qingyue asked.

"Yes, go in. Auntie just asked you where you were going?" Su Xi said.

Gu Qingyue approached the ward and saw her mother sitting on the sofa with a laptop on her lap. Seeing this, Gu Qingyue frowned and said, "Mom, can you take a rest?"

Mother Gu raised her head from the computer and smiled slightly. "It's just a small matter. I can take care of it. You don't have to stay in the hospital all day. There's nothing serious wrong with Mom's health. Besides, your Uncle Su will come to the hospital too."

Gu Qingyue sat down next to her mother, took her arm, and said, "Mom, judging from the two days you've been in the hospital, I think Uncle Su has been really good to you."

Mother Gu smiled and said, "Silly girl, no, I can be with your uncle."

Gu Qingyue didn't stay in the hospital for too long. When Su Yanli came to the hospital, she was ready to go back to school.

Su Yanli said: "Qingyue, let the driver take you back to school."

Gu Qingyue originally wanted to say that she could stop a car to go back, but then she changed her mind and decided to agree after all since it was Su Yanli's kindness.

When she walked out of the inpatient department, the driver, Uncle Wu, was already waiting downstairs.

Gu Qingyue got in the car, and the driver, Old Wu, asked, "Going back to school?"

"Yeah." Gu Qingyue nodded.

Old Wu said, "Mr. Su truly loves his wife. He's been busy at the company lately, and he's been visiting his wife at the hospital all day. With Mr. Su's status, it's rare to find a man who still cares about his family."

Gu Qingyue nodded.

Old Wu said, "Qingyue must find a husband who is as caring as her in the future."

Gu Qingyue was looking out the window at the moment. Hearing this, she was slightly stunned for a moment. She smiled and said, "Wait for him to come find me."

As soon as she finished speaking, she thought of a person who was on a business trip in Manchester. Gu Qingyue shook her head, feeling that her idea was a bit ridiculous.

She pushed open the dormitory door, and Jiang Xinhui and He Qing looked over at the same time. They stared at each other for a moment, as if hesitating who would speak first. Finally, He Qing asked cautiously, "Is your mother okay?"

"It's nothing serious, just a minor operation." Gu Qingyue said.

Jiang Xinhui and He Qing breathed a sigh of relief at the same time.

"The way you looked when you received the call earlier, I was really worried that it was something big." Jiang Xinhui patted her chest with lingering fear.

"I'm sorry, I scared you."

He Qing waved his hand and said, "As long as your mother is fine, that's all."

Jiang Xinhui recalled the topic that had been interrupted just now and asked again: "He Qing, what did you say about Chi Xiqian just now?"

"Oh, nothing much, she's just been pursuing Song Xiaoshu recently." He Qing said.

"How does she know Song Xiaoshu?"

He Qing raised his finger and pointed at Gu Qingyue: "You should ask Qingyue about this."

Jiang Xinhui turned her head and stared at Gu Qingyue. Gu Qingyue paused for a moment and said slowly, "Chi Xiqian was also at Yang Shuowen's cousin's pub that day. She came to say hello to me. Song Xiaoshu was also there, so what happened next was beyond my control."

"Hey, all the handsome guys belong to others."

He Qing smiled and said, "You can also take the initiative to chase handsome guys."

Jiang Xinhui wailed, "I'm a self-aware person. Song Xiaoshu wouldn't like my type. I don't think he'd like Chi Xiqian either."

"Probably." He Qing was facing a mirror, applying a facial mask. "I heard from Yang Shuowen that Song Xiaoshu had a few relationships when he was studying in Macau. His love life was quite messy. He wasn't as well behaved as he looked."
