Chapter 24
Gu Qingyue had visited Zaisif twice this week. Each time, she stayed in the living room, playing with him for an hour before leaving. Being alone in the house, she felt a completely different state of mind than when Gu Hengsheng was around.
Gu Qingyue had a vague feeling that he would be back today, although she hadn't asked him when. She was wearing a black sweater today, and in just a few moments, her body was covered in Zaisif's cat fur.
She lowered her head and carefully removed the cat hair from her sweater one by one. After a while, her patience ran out. She got up from the carpet, walked to the kitchen, opened the refrigerator, and took out a can of iced coffee.
She hooked her finger on the pull ring and gently pulled it up. She took a sip, holding the iced coffee, leaned forward on the bar, and her eyes fell on the closed door. In all the times she came here, she had hardly ever entered his bedroom. Now, she was a little curious.
Gu Qingyue raised her hand to cover the door handle. She applied force lightly and the door opened.
What caught the eye was a huge glass floor-to-ceiling window with only a layer of white curtain drawn, a European floor lamp, a double bed with grey sheets and pillows of the same colour, and a black wardrobe next to the door.
Gu Qingyue walked to the floor-to-ceiling window and found that the bedroom had a great view. Looking out from the room, there was the sea view of Huai City. She wondered if he had ever seen the sunrise from his bed.
Gu Qingyue had once imagined how she would decorate a house if she owned one, and Gu Hengsheng's bedroom fulfilled all her fantasies. The large bed sat next to the floor-to-ceiling windows, and when she opened her eyes, she could see the sea where the water met the sky.
Gu Qingyue didn't dare stay in the bedroom for too long, fearing that he would notice something when he came back. She didn't know his habits, but she could tell that he didn't like others entering his private space without permission.
Although he had always been gentle and tolerant towards her, Gu Qingyue could vaguely sense his silent "indulgence" towards her. That was why she dared to enter his bedroom so brazenly without his knowledge. Perhaps if it were someone else, she wouldn't dare to do so, and would become the "little girl who is so well-behaved that she is almost dull" in the eyes of many elders.
There was the sound of a key turning outside the door, and Zaisif jumped from her lap to the floor, walked leisurely to the door, and then stopped.
When Gu Hengsheng pushed the door open, he was met with the gazes of a man and a cat.
Gu Qingyue sat cross-legged on the carpet, holding a gray pillow in her arms. She was wearing a loose black turtleneck sweater and dark purple corduroy pants. Her long black hair was casually tied into a bun on her forehead. Her lips were rosy, revealing a slender temperament and a faint charm between a girl and a woman.
"You look tired."
Her voice interrupted his thoughts. Gu Hengsheng suddenly realized that he was looking at her from a male perspective. He was a little stunned. He raised his hand and pinched his eyebrows. He must have been really exhausted these days.
He coughed lightly, looking lazy: "I am a little tired."
"Do you have a cold?" Gu Qingyue followed him into the bedroom. Ten minutes ago, she had come in once without his knowledge.
"Maybe." Gu Hengsheng put the suitcase next to the wardrobe.
He took off his coat with his back to Gu Qingyue. When he turned around to hang it on the hanger, Gu Qingyue was holding Zaisif and staring at him. Gu Hengsheng was stunned for a moment, as if remembering something. He raised his wrist to check the time. It was lunchtime. He asked, "Are you hungry? Let me see what food is in the refrigerator?"
As he said this, he was about to walk out the door.
"No, I'm not hungry." Gu Qingyue said, "You look very tired, why don't you take a rest?"
Gu Hengsheng stopped walking. He was indeed tired. He thought for a moment, smiled, and said, "Okay, I'll rest for two hours, and then we'll go to the hospital to see your mother together."
"Don't be so anxious." Gu Qingyue said, "My mother is in good condition now and will be discharged the day after tomorrow. In fact, she won't blame you if you don't go to see her."
He raised his hand to take off his watch, checked the time, and said, "Wake me up at three o'clock."
"good."
When Gu Hengsheng's back rested against the soft bed, his body naturally relaxed. As he closed his eyes, he heard the little girl's voice from outside the door, deliberately lowered with a hint of annoyance: "Ah, Zaisif, you've got me covered in cat hair again!"
The first thing Gu Qingyue did when she returned to the living room was to log into her mobile app and buy some over-the-counter cold medicine. To meet the minimum purchase price, she also randomly picked up a few Western medicines.
While waiting for the delivery man to arrive, Gu Qingyue got up from the sofa and pulled the curtains in the living room. She liked watching movies in the dark, and always felt that the dim light could make people immerse themselves quickly.
Gu Qingyue turned on the TV, turned off the sound, and watched a nearly two-hour long "silent" movie.
The light above her head suddenly turned on. Gu Qingyue narrowed her eyes slightly and looked up at the source of the light.
"Actually, you can turn up the volume a bit. The room has very good sound insulation," said Gu Hengsheng.
Gu Qingyue turned to look at him. She picked up the phone on the sofa and said, "It's not three o'clock yet."
"It's okay." Gu Hengsheng's eyes fell on the bag on the coffee table. Looking at the appearance of the bag, there was blue writing on the outside of the white paper bag: Xihe Pharmacy.
Gu Qingyue noticed his gaze and said, "Fever-reducing medicine and cold granules."
"For me?"
"Yes, I think you have a fever." She watched him approach.
Gu Hengsheng sat down on the sofa, untied the bag, and looked at the cold syrup, fever medicine, and children's cough syrup inside. He looked at her confusedly and picked up a box of cough syrup: "Children's cough syrup?"
"I just picked it randomly to meet the minimum delivery price." Gu Qingyue said embarrassedly.
"Thank you." He smiled.
Gu Qingyue walked to the window and pulled open the curtains. Outside was a gray rain. She whispered, "Oh, it's raining."
She turned her head and looked at Gu Hengsheng: "You should be hungry, right? Let's order takeout and go to the hospital to see my mother later?"
"Okay." Gu Hengsheng said, "What do you recommend?"
Gu Qingyue returned to the sofa, picked up her phone, logged into the takeaway app, glanced at Gu Hengsheng again, and said, "You're still sick, let's have some porridge. There's a place that serves pretty good porridge."
"Don't worry about me, just do what you like."
Gu Qingyue held the phone, seeming to hesitate. After a while, she said righteously, "You drink plain porridge while I eat delicious food. That's too unfair."
Gu Qingyue chose a porridge shop and ordered two bowls of white porridge, a serving of steamed dumplings, and some side dishes to go with the porridge.
Gu Hengsheng laughed: "I don't have such an idea."
"I have, and my conscience will condemn me." She said seriously.
Gu Hengsheng smiled faintly, and she asked again: "Will you bring me a gift for the business trip?"
Gu Hengsheng's expression paused slightly. After a while, in his silence, a kind of loss appeared in her eyes. Gu Hengsheng caught it and nodded slowly.
"I didn't expect you to bring me a business trip gift," she said.
Gu Hengsheng himself hadn't considered this gift; it was truly unexpected. After the forum, a professor was planning to buy an anniversary gift for his wife and asked Xu Xin for recommendations. Gu Hengsheng went along, and for some reason, he bought a bottle himself. On his return, he was still thinking about the gift, perhaps deciding not to give it. As an elder, giving such a gift to a younger person seemed somewhat ambiguous and inappropriate; it wasn't something he'd do.
"Perfume, recommended by a colleague."
"Is it the female colleague who ordered food for you last time?" Gu Qingyue deliberately emphasized the word "female".
"You have a good memory." Gu Hengsheng glanced at her.
"I have a good memory and I tend to hold grudges easily, so you have to be careful," she said half-jokingly.
"Okay, I'll be careful," he smiled, "and try not to annoy you."
Gu Hengsheng opened his suitcase and took out a white gift bag with black edges. The word CHANEL was written in black on the paper bag. He handed it to her and said, "I'm not sure if it's suitable for you. This is the first time I'm buying someone a gift."
"You've never given a gift to your ex before." Gu Qingyue held the gift bag, a little curious.
Gu Hengsheng had dated two girlfriends, most of whom were knowledgeable and interesting. As for gifts, Gu Hengsheng would often entrust his assistants to buy them. If you think about it carefully, he seemed to have never personally chosen gifts for any of his exes.
"Ah, being your girlfriend is too pitiful." After a while, Gu Qingyue said again, "Then I should probably worship this bottle of perfume."
Gu Hengsheng laughed at her strange ideas and asked, "How do we offer sacrifices?"
“How about lighting a stick of incense every morning?”
"Incense?" He frowned, thinking for a moment, then nodded and said, "That's an interesting idea."
