Chapter 36

Gu Qingyue emerged from Su Xi's apartment, her face reflected in the closed elevator door. She recalled her retort to Su Xi, "We're fine."

Su Xi simply glanced at her calmly and asked her calmly, "Qingyue, you must have heard the story of the man who covered his ears and stole the bell."

Covering one's ears to steal the bell.

Gu Qingyue admitted that she felt a little guilty about saying, "We're fine." She felt guilty that Gu Hengsheng was more than just an ordinary elder to her. She'd repeatedly created opportunities for them to spend time together, and she'd already developed inappropriate thoughts about their relationship. But she didn't allow herself to dwell on it, until Su Xi lifted the curtain on her.

It was somewhat embarrassing. Su Xi had seen through everything in the few times they'd met. Gu Qingyue didn't dare to think too much about whether Gu Hengsheng, a man of such meticulous attention, might have seen something. Or perhaps he had seen something but, for her sake, feigned ignorance. The thought of this situation made Gu Qingyue feel deeply uncomfortable.

Gu Qingyue stepped out of the elevator, but didn't want to go back to the dorm. She was just beginning to feel hungry. Outside Suxi's apartment, just past the traffic light, there was a KFC. Gu Qingyue ordered a set meal and a family bucket, then decided to check into the hotel.

She checked in, got her room card, and took the elevator. Besides her, there was another boy in the elevator who looked about her age. He glanced at the takeout bag in her hand and said, "That's a lot. Can you finish it?"

Gu Qingyue ignored him. The boy seemed a little embarrassed and stopped talking to her. Her phone was vibrating. It was Gu Hengsheng, asking her where she was.

Who said that when you are unhappy you should eat meat?

After Gu Qingyue finished a burger, a taro pie, and half a cup of Coke, the doorbell rang. Gu Qingyue slipped on her hotel slippers and went to open the door.

Gu Hengsheng was wearing a gray round-necked sweater, revealing a wide white shirt collar. He also had a camel-colored coat hooked in his hand. His eyes fell on her, but he didn't say anything. Gu Qingyue also stepped aside to let him in without saying a word.

She closed the door, and the room was filled with the aroma of fried chicken. Gu Hengsheng's eyes fell on the KFC bag on the coffee table. He turned to look at her and said, "Haven't you had dinner yet?"

"Hmm." She was in a bad mood. She sat on the sofa, put on disposable gloves, and took out a medium-sized chicken wing, showing no intention of entertaining him. The skin was slightly burnt, and the meat was slightly tough when it touched her mouth. Gu Qingyue frowned and put the medium-sized chicken wing down in dismay.

She took off her disposable gloves, then looked up and asked him, "How did you know?"

Gu Hengsheng put his coat at the end of the bed and said, "Su Xi, call me."

Gu Qingyue nodded and said, "Have you known my sister for a long time? I mean before you came to Huai City."

"Yes." He sat down on the sofa opposite her, handed her a tissue, and said gently, "Is there anything you want to ask?"

Gu Qingyue carefully observed his expression: "Isn't it true? You can tell what I'm thinking."

"Qingyue, I'm just an ordinary person," he said.

Gu Qingyue smiled, but the smile did not reach her eyes. She rested her chin on one hand and looked at him for a long time before she whispered, "How much do you know about my sister and Fourth Uncle?"

Gu Hengsheng picked up a stack of papers that was about to fall from the coffee table. He put them in his bag and said slowly, "Before returning home."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"That's their business. It has nothing to do with you or me, Qingyue."

"You're so indifferent," she rebuked him coldly, then continued, "What about me? Fourth Aunt told me the other day that you weren't very willing to take care of your family. After all, I don't mean anything to you. Perhaps you care about me because of my father."

Gu Hengsheng was silent for a moment, then stared at her again: "Liang Wan told you that."

She was stubborn and didn't speak.

Gu Hengsheng nodded in understanding and said nothing more.

Gu Qingyue lay down on the bed, staring at the ceiling light above her head, the light was so bright that it was blinding. She rubbed her eyes and had to realize that she had messed up everything.

Before he left, he still didn't answer the question, but just gently told her to lock the door. The moment he left, Gu Qingyue wanted to chase him and apologize, but it was only a fleeting thought.

This thought did not disappear until the next day, when the sunlight shone through the window onto the white bed.

Her cell phone had been turned off due to low battery. She tossed and turned last night and couldn't fall asleep. She played with her phone until the screen went black and then closed her eyes and fell asleep.

Waking up at this moment, I didn't know what time it was, but the noisy sound of cars downstairs told me it was probably late. Gu Qingyue got out of bed and went to the bathroom to wash up, thinking about going to the front desk later to ask for a power bank.

As she charged her phone, messages began pouring in, and it was vibrating non-stop. Besides several calls from her roommates, there was also a message from Su Xi. Gu Qingyue didn't open it, but called Shu Miaomiao back first.

"Hey, you have two classes this morning, did you forget? Oh my god, why didn't you answer the phone? I almost called the police."

"Sorry, my phone ran out of battery last night." Gu Qingyue said.

"Then when will you come back? There is a lecture in the afternoon, and your counselor requires everyone to be present." Shu Miaomiao reminded her.

"Okay, I'll be back soon."

Gu Qingyue hung up the phone, but did not leave in a hurry. She waited until her phone was almost charged, then she returned the power bank and went through the check-out procedures.

When she returned to the dormitory, Shu Miaomiao was alone there. There was a yoga mat on the floor. She was practicing yoga. She took the time to glance at her and asked, "Have you had lunch?"

Gu Qingyue shook her head and sat down on the chair. Suddenly she felt very tired. She leaned over the desk with a frown on her face. "Not yet."

"Why, are you in a bad mood?"

Gu Qingyue hummed, and Shu Miaomiao said, "Sister Su Xi just called me and asked if you had arrived at the dormitory. Did anything happen between you and Sister Su Xi?"

"Well, nothing." Gu Qingyue didn't want to say more.

Whenever she thought of what happened last night, she felt as tired as if she had traveled through mountains and rivers. She didn't want to go through it again. Besides, there were many obscure things in it that could not be told to outsiders.

Shu Miaomiao looked at her carefully again and said, "If you want to talk, you can come to me."

"Thank you, Miaomiao." said Gu Qingyue.

Gu Qingyue had been having a rough week. Every night before bed, she struggled with herself, wanting to send Gu Hengsheng a message and apologize. However, every time she typed her earnest words into the chat box, she couldn't muster the courage to press send. Sometimes, she gritted her teeth and thought, this was a knife in the end anyway, so she might as well make a firm decision and find a way out. A gentle man like him wouldn't be so fussy with her.

On Friday, Gu Qingyue received a WeChat message from Song Xiaoshu, asking if she was at school that Saturday. He was going to borrow books from their school library that Saturday afternoon. The two of them had an appointment at 1 p.m., and as Gu Qingyue was about to leave, Jiang Xinhui half-jokingly said, "Oh, doesn't S University have a library? I think he's using the excuse of borrowing books as an opportunity to pursue you."

Gu Qingyue didn't think much about it at the moment. When she arrived at the library and saw Song Xiaoshu, Jiang Xinhui's words kept lingering in her mind. As soon as she saw Song Xiaoshu, she subconsciously blurted out, "Are you pursuing me?"

Song Xiaoshu was stunned for a moment. After two seconds, he smiled and asked, "What if I say yes?"

His attitude was somewhat nonchalant. Gu Qingyue didn't know if he was joking with her or if he was serious. After a long moment, she looked at him and said seriously, "I treat you as a friend."

She spoke carefully, her face serious. Song Xiaoshu let out a long "oh" and laughed for no reason. After a long while, he acted mischievously, "I tricked you. It was just a joke."

Gu Qingyue frowned and complained quietly that he was so boring, then asked, "Did you find the book you wanted to borrow?"

"Well, not yet. Go look for it now."

As the two of them walked towards the bookshelf, Gu Qingyue suddenly asked, "Let me ask you a question?"

"What?"

"Have you ever had a conflict with an elder in your family? If you want to apologize, how do you do it?"

"Oh, who did you have a conflict with?" Song Xiaoshu asked.

"Just an elder." She said vaguely.

Song Xiaoshu spread his hands and said, "I've never had an argument with my family. The only memory I have is probably when I was a child, I was scolded by my parents. I was angry and ignored them for a while, but it wasn't until they tried to comfort me that I finally gave in."

Gu Qingyue sighed. Seeing this, Song Xiaoshu smiled and said, "I think the elder who had a conflict with you probably won't take it to heart."

"Yeah?"

"Seeing how upset you are, I think he must be very important to you." He smiled and looked at her and said so.
