Chapter 46

Mr. Gu's first wife was Mei Xingqing, Gu Hengsheng's biological mother. Mei Xingqing and Mr. Gu were childhood sweethearts, and their families knew each other well. The Mei family was a long line of merchants, and Mr. Gu's acquaintance, their study abroad, and their marriage were all happily agreed upon by both families.

However, as the Mei family gradually declined, Mr. Gu's feelings for his wife, Mei Xingqing, also faded. Under Mr. Gu's leadership, the Gu family grew stronger and stronger, and the business dealings, as a man's unstable nature, led to the current situation.

Madam Mei, nurtured from a young age by her family, understood the importance of a woman's dignity. Upon learning that Mr. Gu had a mistress outside, she immediately moved out of the master bedroom to demonstrate her resolve. Madam Mei had suffered from poor health since childhood, and this incident further deteriorated, ultimately forcing her to confine herself to a wheelchair.

Mr. Gu, despite his wife's poor health, did not restrain himself. Instead, he openly brought all his extended family into his home. Thus, in today's monogamous society, Mr. Gu became a polygamous man. The media delighted in using this family's scandals as after-dinner gossip.

Because of her health condition, Mrs. Mei did not divorce Mr. Gu in the end. She later died of a heart attack and failed rescue efforts.

Not long after Madam Mei passed away, Gu Hengsheng's older brother and younger sister also died in accidents. Gu Hengsheng was the only one left in the eldest branch of the family.

Gu Qingyue rested her face on the pillow, listening to her mother's story. She suddenly regretted asking her mother about these things. She couldn't imagine how Gu Hengsheng accepted all this. She asked, "How old was Third Uncle when Grandma Mei passed away?"

"He's only twelve years old." said Gu's mother.

Gu Qingyue remained silent, clutching the pendant against her chest. She felt a chill running down her spine, and her mother sighed in her ears, "It's late, go to bed."

The next day, Gu Qingyue had just woken up when she received Song Xiaoshu's message. She hugged her knees and stared at the message, unable to react for a moment.

[See you in fifteen minutes.]

Gu's mother came over to wake her up. Seeing that Gu Qingyue was still holding her phone, she couldn't help but say a few words: "Why are you holding your phone as soon as you wake up? Hurry up and wash up."

Gu Qingyue slowly got up from the bed and sent a message to Song Xiaoshu: [Are you in Yanjiang?]

After she brushed her teeth and washed her face, she heard the voices of Song Xiaoshu and Gu Simin outside the door. Gu Simin pushed the door open and came in, saying, "Qingyue, Song Xiaoshu is here."

Gu Qingyue was not surprised at all, she just asked Song Xiaoshu: "Why did you come to Yanjiang?"

Song Xiaoshu explained: "I heard that Grandpa Gu had just been discharged from the hospital, so my dad came to see him."

Gu Qingyue had just washed her face, her face bare, her hair draped over her shoulders. A few people went to breakfast. Song Xiaoshu had arrived in Yanjiang last night and had come early today with his father to see Old Master Gu, so they hadn't had a proper breakfast. Nanny Li then asked them to sit down.

Gu Qingyue dipped the fried dough sticks into the soy milk and asked, "When will you return to Macau?"

Song Xiaoshu ate with great manners, scooping the porridge into his mouth. After swallowing it, he said, "We'll leave in the afternoon."

Hearing this, Gu Simin looked at Song Xiaoshu and asked in surprise, "Are you from Macau?"

"yes."

Gu Simin said, "My classmates and I have agreed to travel to Macau after graduation. Can I visit you then?"

"Okay, remember to call me." Song Xiaoshu said.

As soon as he finished speaking, he heard footsteps behind him, followed by a voice: "Hey, let's have breakfast here."

Gu Chaojun walked to the table, picked up a fried dumpling and put it in his mouth before sitting down at the table: "Oh, it's Song Xiaoshu, long time no see."

"haven't seen you for a long time."

Gu Chaojun held a glass and said, "I'm going out to see a movie later. Do you want to go?"

Gu Simin shook her head: "I have homework to review, so I won't go."

Gu Chaojun glanced at Gu Qingyue: "What about you? You don't have time either."

The tone is condescending and makes people feel uncomfortable.

Gu Simin spoke first, "Qingyue has to help me with my homework, so she doesn't have time."

Gu Chaojun looked mocking: "You are so stupid that you need help to do an exercise. You are not a child of seven or eight years old."

Gu Simin curled her lips and retorted, “Who cares?”

Gu Chaojun was a little embarrassed, so he stood up and said, "He has a puppy-like temper. He bites people before he even finishes talking."

Gu Simin looked at Gu Chaojun's departing back and said angrily, "Psycho."

After this incident, Gu Simin felt no longer in the mood. She grabbed an egg and left the table. Gu Qingyue and Song Xiaoshu were the only ones left at the table. They stared at each other for a moment.

Song Xiaoshu suddenly asked, "Why did you leave so suddenly on New Year's Eve?"

"My sister is here to pick me up." Gu Qingyue said.

Song Xiaoshu smiled, leaned back in his chair, and said with a casual look, "Qingyue, you are lying."

Gu Qingyue was startled, then heard Song Xiaoshu say, "I saw Uncle Gu come to pick you up that day."

Gu Qingyue looked at Song Xiaoshu and said guiltily, "Yes, he came to pick me up."

Song Xiaoshu picked up a fried dumpling and said, "Uncle Gu is here to pick you up, what's there to hide?"

"No, I'm just afraid you might misunderstand me."

Song Xiaoshu looked at her and said with a half-smile, "What's the misunderstanding?"

Gu Qingyue remained silent, staring at Song Xiaoshu: "What do you want to say?"

"Qingyue, relax. I don't mean any harm." Song Xiaoshu comforted her. "It's just a friend's way of showing concern."

Gu Qingyue nodded and drank some soy milk. The fried dough sticks had been soaked for too long and broke apart with a slight touch of the spoon. When she put the fried dough sticks in her mouth, it felt like holding a piece of soaked paper, bland and astringent.

Song Xiaoshu left Yanjiang with his father that afternoon. Gu Qingyue recalled their conversation this morning. She intuitively felt that Song Xiaoshu knew something, but they both knew it well and didn't mention it openly.

Gu Qingyue supported her chin, feeling that her attitude this morning was a bit sharp. She took out her cell phone and sent a text message to Song Xiaoshu, telling him in earnest words that her attitude this morning was a bit unfriendly.

Soon, I received his reply between words.

His tone was calm, and he just said that he didn't take it to heart.

On New Year's Eve, it was probably the first time that Gu Qingyue saw a smile on Old Man Gu's face since she came to Yanjiang, although it was a very faint smile.

After dinner that night, the atmosphere remained warm and friendly, with no sign of discord. Gu Qingyue and the other juniors still occupied a separate table.

At the table, Gu Chaoyun acted composed and restrained his words. Gu Qingyue couldn't appreciate the joy of the New Year's Eve dinner. Gu Hengsheng sat at another table, next to Old Man Gu. He wore a black crewneck sweater, revealing a neat, clean shirt collar. He still looked handsome and gentle, but his expression was a little distant.

At seven o'clock, the group finally left the table. Old Master Gu was unwell, so Nanny Li helped him to his room to rest. Gu Hengsheng was the one distributing the New Year's money for the children. This action was undoubtedly a silent statement.

Gu Chaojun bought some fireworks and took Gu Xin to the yard to set them off. Gu Yisheng took the cigarette butt from his mouth and passed it to the fuse of the firework. The scarlet flame burned the fuse and it was about to catch fire.

Gu Yishen stood up and took a few steps back. When he put the cigarette to his lips, a flash of fire shot straight into the inky night, and then colorful fragments of light bloomed, and the inky night suddenly became as bright as day.

Gu Xin clapped his hands and cheered, his voice full of joy.

Amidst the clamor around them, Gu Hengsheng handed her a red envelope with a gold-stamped cardboard cover. The words "New Year's Envelope" were clearly visible on the paper. Gu Qingyue took it in her hands and realized it was two envelopes. She blinked, "Why are there two?"

The firelight in the sky dimmed, and I couldn't see his face for a moment. I only heard him say, "The other one is for you."

The author has something to say: If you don’t think it’s good, just give it up.
