Chapter 54

Gu Qingyue did not return to the dining table, but hailed a car and returned to her residence.

Thinking back to what she said to Gu Hengsheng, Gu Qingyue knew that her accusations against him were exaggerated. If she accused Gu Hengsheng of playing a tacit trick with her, it was only because she wanted to.

Gu Qingyue propped her forehead with her hand, watching the mottled night scene pass by outside the window. Her phone buzzed in her handbag. Gu Qingyue glanced at it and saw it was a call and message from Gu Hengsheng.

She didn't call him back, but instead logged into WeChat and sent a message to Song Xiaoshu.

[I want to drink.]

A moment later, Song Xiaoshu called and jokingly asked, "Why do you suddenly feel like drinking? Where are you? I'll pick you up."

Gu Qingyue glanced at the car window, gave an address, and asked the driver to stop.

When Song Xiaoshu drove up, Gu Qingyue was squatting on the ground, hugging her knees, her blue handbag casually placed beside her legs, not worried about being snatched away. She was wearing a blue sweater. Her skin was naturally fair, and the blue dress made her look like a jade polished to a shine, even more eye-catching in the night.

Song Xiaoshu got out of the car and walked towards her. He put his hands in his trouser pockets and looked down at her.

A strand of hair fell on each side of her cheek, making her face look even smaller, yet revealing a hint of pity. Song Xiaoshu smiled and teased her, "You look like a lost child, waiting for your parents to come and find you."

"Come, Dad is here to pick you up." He pretended to have a deep and low voice.

Gu Qingyue looked up and stared at him without saying a word, not tactfully responding with a smile.

Song Xiaoshu raised his hand and touched his nose, feeling somewhat embarrassed. He tutted softly, bent down, picked up the handbag beside her legs, and raised his chin: "Didn't you say we wanted to drink? Let's go."

Gu Qingyue stood up, followed him, and said, "Why don't you ask me why I drink?"

"Why else?" Song Xiaoshu said, understandingly. "I heard Third Uncle Gu came to London today?"

Song Xiaoshu knew everything about her relationship with Gu Hengsheng. Gu Qingyue didn't hide it from him and hummed dejectedly.

Song Xiaoshu gave her a knowing look and asked, "So your desire to drink is related to him?"

Gu Qingyue nodded.

Song Xiaoshu sighed softly and said, "You're such a loser! If you find a boyfriend and start a relationship, he won't be able to hold back."

Gu Qingyue raised her head and blurted out, "Will you talk to me?"

Song Xiaoshu suddenly stopped, catching Gu Qingyue off guard. The two of them got a little close. Song Xiaoshu lowered his head slightly and stared at Gu Qingyue: "Okay, as long as you don't regret it."

His gaze was so scorching that Gu Qingyue could hardly bear it for a moment. She took a step back, and Song Xiaoshu sneered faintly.

Song Xiaoshu took Gu Qingyue to a bar. There were not many customers in the bar, and there was a guitarist humming a ballad.

Gu Qingyue and Song Xiaoshu picked a table. Song Xiaoshu called the waiter and ordered two drinks.

Gu Qingyue rested her chin on one hand and added ice cubes to her whiskey. Song Xiaoshu didn't stop her, but leaned back on the sofa, idly tapping on his phone.

It wasn't until one in the morning that Gu Qingyue felt a little sleepy and lost interest. She said, "Let's go back."

Song Xiaoshu put his phone in his pocket, picked up his coat draped over the back of a chair, and said, "Let's go."

The two walked out of the bar, and Song Xiaoshu drove her back. When Gu Qingyue stepped into the elevator, her mind was a little distracted. When she reached the floor, she raised her hand, pressed the password, and opened the door.

She casually pressed the light switch at the entrance, and when she lowered her head to change her shoes, she saw a pair of Slivano Lattanz men's leather shoes on the floor. Gu Qingyue immediately raised her head and looked towards the living room.

There was a faint figure on the sofa in the living room. She looked from the bright side to the dark side, and it was very clear. Gu Qingyue had told him the password to this house, claiming that her memory for numbers was not very good, so she asked him to help remember it.

Gu Hengsheng reclined on the sofa, his suit jacket draped over it. He rested his hand on his forehead, eyes closed. Gu Qingyue approached, and hearing the noise, he withdrew his hand from his forehead and turned to look at her. A hint of fatigue lingered in his expression. "You're back."

Gu Qingyue nodded lightly.

Gu Hengsheng propped himself up and sat on the sofa. He took a bottle of mineral water from the coffee table, unscrewed it, took two sips, and said calmly, "Have you been drinking?"

Gu Qingyue nodded, feeling a little tired from standing, so she sat down on the sofa.

He got up from the sofa, took his coat from the sofa, put it on, looked at her, and said, "I'm glad you're back. I'll go back first."

Gu Qingyue stood in the living room, silent, watching the door close with a soft sound. She lay down where Gu Hengsheng had been, a faint scent of tobacco lingering on her nostrils. She looked toward the trash can, a speck of scarlet inside. She closed her eyes, wondering if beneath his calm face, he had also been tossing and turning like her.

Gu Qingyue lay on the sofa all night, and when she woke up, it was already noon. She had been lying on the sofa all night, her hands and feet tied, and in her dreams, she was afraid of accidentally falling to the ground. She slept very comfortably that night, and now she only felt a sore back.

Song Xiaoshu called and asked if she was awake.

Gu Qingyue said, "I'm awake."

Song Xiaoshu teased her, "I was worried you might pass out in the middle of the night, so I called to check on you."

Gu Qingyue picked up the kettle, added some water, and planned to boil some water to drink: "That's not the case yet."

The two exchanged a few more words. Just as Gu Qingyue hung up, her mother called. Gu Qingyue cleared her throat and said, "Mom."

"Are you up?" Mother Gu asked gently.

"Yeah, it's up."

The water in the kettle boiled, emitting a thin layer of steam. Gu Qingyue took out a glass and poured half a cup of water into it. A thin layer of steam soon covered the wall of the glass.

Mrs. Gu said, "Your third uncle has been in London these past two days. Have you met him?"

Gu Qingyue rubbed her fingers against the cup, the heat of the boiling water seeping through the glass and slowly warming her fingertips. She withdrew her fingers and said, "I've seen it."

The reason why Gu's mother asked Gu Qingyue to study abroad was simply because of Gu Hengsheng. However, after she went abroad, she met Gu Hengsheng several times, which Gu's mother knew about, but she never complained.

Gu Qingyue thought for a moment and asked, "Mom, why did you let me come to London to study? Is it just because of Third Uncle?"

"Didn't mom tell you at the beginning? Why are you asking this question out of the blue?" Mother Gu avoided the question deliberately.

Gu Qingyue wanted to ask more, but her mother changed the subject and brought up something else. Gu Qingyue had to give up and chatted with her mother about some family matters. When she was about to hang up, her mother told her as usual to take good care of herself, eat well, and keep warm.

The author has something to say: No update tomorrow night, I will sort out the subsequent plot.

I still have to say a few words on behalf of Third Uncle. A 32-year-old man has his concerns, and because of my writing style, I've been able to describe Qingyue's thoughts in more detail, so you can see them more directly. I've only touched on Third Uncle's thoughts briefly. After all, if I spent too much time describing how miserable Third Uncle was, you might not be able to finish reading. Anyway, when Qingyue is having a hard time, Third Uncle is having a hard time too.

Okay, it’s Uncle San’s turn to suffer next.
