Chapter 7
After the old man’s birthday, most people left the next day. Compared to the hustle and bustle of last night, the place felt a bit quieter.
Gu Qingyue had classes at school and couldn't be late, so Gu Simin came to see her off: "I'll visit you in Huai City later."
Gu Qingyue responded: "Okay, I'll wait for you."
Mother Gu spoke a few more words to the elders in the family, and then the mother and daughter got into the car. This time, it was Uncle Yu who took them to Yanjiang Airport.
It was raining when I came last time, and it was still drizzling when I left this time.
On the way, Gu Qingyue talked to her mother about Gu Heng's birth. Her mother said with emotion: "The three children of the eldest wife are all highly intelligent. It's a pity that only your third uncle is left."
Gu Qingyue knew that Gu Hengsheng's mother was Mr. Gu's first wife, who was said to have died early. Gu Qingyue said in confusion, "I have no recollection of her at all."
"The year the eldest lady passed away, you were not yet..." Uncle Yu paused for two seconds, then continued, "not yet born."
Gu Qingyue knew what Uncle Yu had not finished saying, and her eyelashes narrowed slightly.
Mother Gu held Gu Qingyue's hand and looked at her expression. Gu Qingyue raised her eyes and smiled.
It was already noon when the flight landed at Huai City Airport.
Gu Qingyue's sister, Su Xi, picked up the mother and daughter at the airport. She was tall and slender, wearing a black off-the-shoulder sweater and a matching knitted skirt. A former model, Su Xi's striking presence caught the attention of many in the bustling airport.
Gu's mother received a phone call and had something urgent to do at the company, so she hailed a taxi and left.
Gu Qingyue was in the same car with Su Xi, and Su Xi handed her a cup of silk stocking milk tea.
The two are from a reconstituted family and have no blood relationship, but because they have been together for a long time, they are no different from real sisters.
Su Xi took off the black leather rope from her wrist, gathered her long hair into a handful, and asked, "How have you been in Yanjiang City these past few days?"
Gu Qingyue took a sip of milk tea: "Not bad."
Su Xi smiled and said, "How's your grandfather? How's he doing?"
"Very good." Gu Qingyue frowned and said, "I can't tell anything."
Su Xi laughed and said, "I asked a silly question. You're so afraid of your grandfather, so you probably just want to stay as far away from him as possible."
A few days ago, when going to Yanjiang City, Gu Qingyue made a big fuss in front of her mother. She first pretended to have a stomachache and tried everything, but in the end she got on the plane obediently.
Thinking about it now, Gu Qingyue felt a little embarrassed. She said awkwardly, "I don't know why I'm so afraid of him."
Su Xi asked again: "Go home today and go back to school tomorrow morning"
"good."
The two sisters returned to their residence, and Su Xi said, "Auntie has prepared lunch. Please go in. I still have things to take care of."
Gu Qingyue nodded, knowing that Su Xi was a very busy person. She now managed a studio, unlike her, who was the most idle person in the family.
She closed the car door and said through the window, "Drive carefully."
Su Xi nodded at her in the car and said, "If you want something for midnight snack, send me a message and I'll bring it back to you in the evening."
Gu Qingyue watched Su Xi drive away before returning to the house.
"I'm back," Aunt Xu said. "I made you your favorite mushroom and tomato noodles."
Gu Qingyue took off her coat and put it on the sofa. After saying thank you with a smile, she went to the bathroom to wash her hands before sitting down at the dining table.
She had a poor appetite this morning and only drank a bottle of milk. Now she was really hungry. She scooped a spoonful of the soup into her mouth and couldn't help but praise it with a squint, "It tastes good."
Aunt Xu was naturally happy. She went to the kitchen, washed a pear, cut it into slices, put it on a plate, and placed it on the dining table for her.
Gu Qingyue filled her stomach and returned to her room. Near the doorway lay a pile of parcels—books she'd purchased a few days ago. She took a knife from a drawer and cut along the transparent tape, splitting the carton open. She pulled out the books, picked up one at random, and began flipping through them while lying on the bed.
I don't know when I fell asleep, and when I woke up, I was awakened by a call from my good friend Shu Miaomiao. Shu Miaomiao was Gu Qingyue's high school classmate. After graduating from the college entrance examination, Shu Miaomiao and Gu Qingyue were admitted to the same university. This fate is really rare.
Gu Qingyue was lying on the bed, and Shu Miaomiao whispered softly, "Qingyue, are you back from Yanjiang?"
"Yeah, just got home."
"Oh, when will you go back to school?"
"What's wrong?"
"I suddenly wanted to watch a movie, but I couldn't find anyone." Shu Miaomiao said truthfully.
"I'll go back tomorrow and watch it with you tomorrow night, okay?"
The two talked for a few more words and then hung up the phone.
There were voices outside the door, and it seemed that Su Yanli had returned. Gu Qingyue got out of bed, opened the door, and went out. Su Yanli happened to be passing by the door, and upon hearing the voices, he stopped and said, "Qingyue, are you awake?"
Gu Qingyue hummed, and then asked, "Uncle Su, is my mother back?"
"She should be back before dinner. What's going on? Do you need her for something?"
Gu Qingyue shook her head: "No, just asking."
Su Yanli: "Your sister came to pick you up at noon? Where did she go?"
"She said there was something going on in the studio and she had to go deal with it," said Gu Qingyue.
Su Yanli nodded and said, "You just got back from the plane and you must be tired. Go and rest. When dinner is ready, Aunt Xu will come upstairs to call you."
Gu Qingyue closed the door, walked to the bed and sat down.
All her sleepiness was gone now, and she didn't want to sleep anymore. Gu Qingyue took out her cell phone and accidentally clicked on the address book. She scrolled down one by one and saw the last contact with the note name #.
That day, I hung up the phone with Gu Hengsheng in the cinema and subconsciously saved the number. Now staring at this #, Gu Qingyue thought about it and decided to change the name to Gu Hengsheng.
At six o'clock, Gu's mother came back and Aunt Xu came up to call Gu Qingyue to go downstairs for dinner.
Su Xi didn't come back, so Gu Qingyue washed her hands and sat down at the dining table. She had eaten too much at noon, so she didn't feel hungry at the moment. She just had another half bowl of rice.
Mother Gu glanced at the rice in her porcelain bowl and asked with concern, "You don't have much appetite. Is this all you're eating?"
Gu Qingyue smiled and shook her head: "No, I ate too much at noon, so I'm not very hungry now."
Su Yanli smiled and said, "If you're hungry tonight, let Aunt Xu cook you a midnight snack."
After dinner, Gu Qingyue sat with her mother for a while and then returned to her room.
Su Xi came back at ten o'clock in the evening and brought some midnight snacks.
Gu Qingyue went to open the door. Su Xi glanced at her and said, "Are you asleep?"
Gu Qingyue shook her head: "Reading."
Su Xi blinked and asked, "Do you want to go to the underground wine cellar to have some drinks together?"
There was a faint smell of alcohol on Su Xi's body, and Gu Qingyue nodded and agreed.
The two of them slipped out of the room quietly. This apartment was very large and had a special underground wine cellar. When Gu Qingyue first came back, it was Su Xi who brought her here. At that time, Su Xi had just turned eighteen and Gu Qingyue was only twelve.
The underground wine cellar has a modern design, with rows of solid wood cabinets lining the walls, and a few murals above. Marble tiles and solid wood floors divide the space into two parts. Overall, the wine cellar's style hints at the owner's heritage. The only exception is the luxurious crystal chandelier hanging above the bar, which, like a sudden splash of blue on ink-stained rice paper, is abrupt and strange.
Gu Qingyue sat down at the bar, her chin resting on one hand as she stared up at the chandelier. "When I was little, I was always worried that it would fall and hit me one day, and I'd end up lying on the floor with my brains spilling out."
Su Xi laughed, took a bottle of champagne from the wine cabinet, put it in an ice bucket, and said slowly, "This is a bit like when I was in school. Every summer, I would look at the whirring ceiling fan in the classroom during class and always wonder when it would die and fall down. How would I hide to avoid the disaster?"
Gu Qingyue's eyebrows curved slightly and she said, "This is my first time here, and you brought me here."
Su Xi recalled the past and sighed: "Yes, I was scolded by my father later."
The two looked at each other and smiled.
Su Xi was in a bad mood at the time, so naturally she wanted to get drunk. Gu Qingyue, since it was her first time drinking and she didn't know her own alcohol tolerance, just accompanied Su Xi. In the end, the two of them slept in the wine cellar. It was not until the next day that Uncle Su and Mother Gu found them in the wine cellar and they woke up.
Gu Qingyue said: "That was my first time drinking."
"Your mother takes good care of you." Su Xi said.
Gu Qingyue played with the red wine rack on the table: "Yes, she loves me very much, I am very lucky."
Su Xi didn't continue the topic. She took out the chilled champagne, poured a glass for Gu Qingyue, and reminded her, "Don't drink too much. If you drink too much, I won't be able to explain myself."
Having said that, the two got drunk again and slept overnight in the underground wine cellar.
The next day, I was naturally woken up by the cold.
Gu Qingyue returned to her room, took a hot bath to warm herself up a little, and had breakfast.
Gu's mother was going to the company and would take her back to school.
Gu Qingyue sneezed, and her mother said, "Do you have a cold?"
"Probably not."
Mother Gu added, "You and Su Xi have a good relationship. I was worried that you two wouldn't get along well. It seems I was overthinking it."
When Gu Qingyue was only twelve years old when her mother decided to get married, she discussed it with her and asked for her opinion. The gist of it was that if she didn't agree, then she would forget about it.
Gu Qingyue is not a selfish child, so she naturally hopes that someone will accompany her for the rest of her life.
Gu Qingyue smiled.
The car drove all the way to the dormitory building. When Gu Qingyue got out of the car, her mother reminded her again: "Remember to make a pack of cold medicine."
Gu Qingyue responded, "Okay."
She took out the key from her bag, locked and opened the door. Her roommate was still sleeping soundly, and many classmates came out to get hot water in the corridor.
She changed her bag very quietly, but even with her gentle movements, she still made some noise. Shu Miaomiao opened the bed curtain, looked out and saw that it was Gu Qingyue, and whispered, "You're back."
Gu Qingyue nodded. Shu Miaomiao climbed down from the bed and gave Gu Qingyue a hug. After a moment, she sniffed, "Qingyue, why? I smell alcohol on you."
Gu Qingyue said nonsense seriously: "My sister just invented a new skin care method. It is said that taking a red wine bath can whiten the skin."
"screw you."
Soon, the other two roommates also got up.
This weekend is Gu's mother's birthday. On Thursday, Gu Qingyue took Shu Miaomiao to a local high-end jewelry store to buy a pair of earrings as a gift for Gu's mother.
Near the door of her home, Gu Qingyue received a call from Gu Simin. This was the first time Gu Simin contacted her since she came back from Yanjiang.
The two chatted for a while, and Gu Qingyue pushed the door open and suddenly heard Gu Simin say, "Third brother has arrived in Huai City. Have you seen him?"
Gu Qingyue was bending over to change her shoes. Upon hearing this, she paused slightly. Her eyes fell on a pair of men's Slivano Lattanz casual leather shoes at the entrance. The size of the shoes was slightly larger and not Uncle Su's size.
