Chapter 9
Gu Qingyue opened the door and Shu Miaomiao came over following her voice and asked, "Why did you take so long?"
"I met my third uncle and had a chat with him," said Gu Qingyue.
Shu Miaomiao probably thought it was an old man and didn't ask any further questions.
When Gu Qingyue went to pay, the clerk told her: "A Mr. Gu has already paid for you."
Shu Miaomiao asked in surprise: "Who?"
"It should be my third uncle." Gu Qingyue understood.
"Which third uncle are you talking about? I've never heard you mention him." Shu Miaomiao said.
"Except for the few times I saw him when I was a child, this was the first time I saw him when I went to Yanjiang City last time. He has been abroad all the time." Gu Qingyue said.
"Is it very old?" Shu Miaomiao asked curiously.
"No." Gu Qingyue smiled and said, "Early 30s."
"I thought it was forty or fifty."
Gu Qingyue was amused: "What nonsense are you talking about?"
Shu Miaomiao stuck out her tongue.
After the two of them left the store, Shu Miaomiao received a call from home and hailed a car to go back.
Gu Qingyue walked slowly, not in a hurry. She was strolling along the roadside when she saw an elderly man buying sweet potatoes. Gu Qingyue walked up to him and asked for two sweet potatoes.
She was holding the paper bag and taking a bite, her mouth steaming with joy when she heard someone behind her call her, "Qingyue."
The voice is very familiar.
An hour ago, she had spoken to the owner of this voice.
A car was parked a few steps away from her. The driver's window was lowered, revealing Gu Hengsheng's face. Gu Qingyue took a few steps forward, and Gu Hengsheng asked, "Are you ready to go home?"
Gu Qingyue held the sweet potato and nodded twice.
Gu Hengsheng smiled and said, "Come up, I'll take you back."
Gu Qingyue opened the passenger door and climbed in. Gu Hengsheng pulled out a few tissues and handed them to her. She took the tissues and quietly thanked him. She placed the tissues in her palm, where the warmth from the sweet potato was slightly less intense.
Gu Qingyue glanced at Gu Hengsheng, seeming to be hesitant to speak.
Gu Hengsheng noticed it and asked, "What do you want to say?"
She hesitated: "Uncle San, I'd better return the money to you."
Gu Hengsheng held the steering wheel with one hand, tilted his head to look at her, and asked with a smile, "What money?"
He pretended not to understand.
Gu Qingyue pursed her lips, and Gu Hengsheng continued, "Since you call me your uncle, it's not a strange thing for me, as an elder, to treat the younger generation to a Japanese meal. Qingyue, don't you agree?"
Gu Qingyue slowly understood what he meant. On second thought, she was indeed a bit tactless. If she insisted on paying back the money the elders had kindly treated the younger generation to a meal, it would be a bit of a lack of emotional intelligence.
"Yes, that's right." Gu Qingyue said seriously, "Thank you, Third Uncle."
She was serious about the matter, and a hint of smile appeared in Gu Hengsheng's eyes.
Gu Qingyue rolled down the car window, the wind blowing her hair against her forehead. Suddenly, she remembered her mother mentioning that he would be developing in Huai City for the next two years. She said, "My mother said you'll be staying in Huai City for the next two years?"
"Yes, if there are no accidents along the way." Gu Hengsheng said.
Gu Qingyue said "oh" softly and said nothing more.
The car arrived at her house quickly. Gu Qingyue unbuckled her seat belt and said, "Do you want to sit in for a while?"
Gu Hengsheng shook his head and said, "I have something else to do later."
Gu Qingyue got out of the car and walked towards the courtyard. She happened to run into Su Xi coming out. "Who sent you back? Your boyfriend?"
"No, it's my third uncle."
Su Xi laughed and blamed her for being ignorant: "Why don't you invite someone in to sit for a while."
"I told you, he has something else to do." Gu Qingyue explained, then said, "Are you going out?"
Su Xi nodded.
Gu Qingyue unlocked the door and changed into slippers at the entrance.
Mother Gu was resting at home today and was watching TV in the living room. Gu Qingyue changed into slippers and her mother said, "You're back."
Gu Qingyue nodded and sat down next to Gu's mother. After a while, she frowned and suddenly let out a soft "ah".
Mother Gu looked at her subconsciously: "What's wrong?"
Gu Qingyue said slowly, "I left the roasted sweet potatoes in Uncle San's car."
"What's this?" Chen Jing picked up the plastic bag on the dashboard. Inside was a brown paper bag. He saw the words on it and glanced at the person in the driver's seat in confusion. "Roasted sweet potatoes?"
Gu Hengsheng glanced at it and explained calmly, "A child dropped it."
Chen Jing sighed. "Oh, I was wondering why you bought this. This isn't the Gu Hengsheng I know."
Gu Hengsheng was helpless and shook his head and smiled.
Chen Jing took out his cigarette case, rolled down the window, and said, "Can I have a cigarette?"
"You can smoke." Gu Hengsheng nodded.
Chen Jingzhi was angry and took two puffs of his cigarette: "What do you think about what I said?"
"The Academy of Sciences has a lot of things going on, so we'll have to wait and see."
Chen Jing: "There are only four classes a week. Just consider it a favor for an old classmate?"
"Let me take another look." Gu Hengsheng said with a smile.
The next day, when Gu Qingyue woke up, she was the only one at home.
Aunt Xu prepared lunch and went back. Every year on Mother Gu’s birthday, Uncle Su would come back early and personally cook a few dishes to celebrate Mother Gu’s birthday.
At noon, Gu's mother called and asked her if she had eaten lunch. She said she might be back late tonight and told her to get some snacks if she was hungry.
Gu Qingyue let out a long "oh" and after hanging up the phone, she leaned over the table, her fingers touching the crystal paperweight on the table, which contained an ink painting of mountains.
Most of the children in the Gu family were required to learn calligraphy from a young age. Gu Qingyue was also required to learn calligraphy for several years when she was young at the Gu residence. Later, after her father passed away and her mother remarried, she stopped practicing calligraphy.
She was the only one in the huge house, and it was indeed a bit boring.
Gu Qingyue went downstairs, planning to cut a plate of fruit and watch a movie.
The refrigerator was fully stocked with ingredients. Gu Qingyue took out two oranges, washed them, and placed them on the chopping board. She then took out a small fruit knife from the knife rack. As the blade touched the orange peel, the orange, as if aware of its impending doom, rolled over, slid off the counter, and rolled out of the kitchen.
Gu Qingyue turned around and left the kitchen. The orange was already in Gu Hengsheng's hand. He was wearing a black shirt and dark blue jeans today, and he was holding a plastic bag in his other hand. The bag looked a little familiar.
He glanced at the orange in his hand and said, "Chopping fruit?"
Gu Qingyue nodded and added, "My mother hasn't come back yet."
"It seems I came too early." He smiled and put the bag on the dining table. "Is this your roasted sweet potato?"
Gu Qingyue blurted out: "Yesterday's?"
"No." Gu Hengsheng said, "I just bought it."
Gu Qingyue's eyebrows lit up, and her voice became a little lighter: "Thank you, Third Uncle."
Last night before going to bed, she tossed and turned because of two roasted sweet potatoes that fell into his car.
Gu Hengsheng took the orange to the kitchen. He pointed to a round orange standing on the chopping board, asking her if she wanted to eat it.
Gu Qingyue pursed her lips and said with a smile, "I'll have some roasted sweet potatoes."
Gu Hengsheng reached out to clear the chopping board. Gu Qingyue walked into the kitchen and said, "Let me do it. After all, you are a guest."
Gu Hengsheng chuckled.
Gu Qingyue put the oranges in the refrigerator and asked him through the refrigerator: "Shall I make you a cup of hot tea?"
"Okay." Gu Hengsheng nodded slightly.
Gu Qingyue squatted in front of the cabinet, looking for tea leaves. She asked him again: "What do you want to drink? Here we have Biluochun, Dahongpao, and..."
She wanted to continue reciting the name of the tea, but Gu Hengsheng didn't respond. She turned back in confusion, and Gu Hengsheng smiled and said, "Biluochun is fine."
Gu Qingyue said "oh" and took out a box of Biluochun from the cabinet.
Gu Hengsheng went to sit on the sofa in the living room and drank tea. Gu Qingyue received a call from her mother, asking her if Gu Hengsheng had arrived.
Gu Qingyue nodded, and Mother Gu said, "We're almost home."
"Okay." Gu Qingyue hung up the phone.
Gu Hengsheng asked, "Second sister-in-law's?"
"Yeah." Gu Qingyue added, "They will be back soon."
Half an hour later, Gu's mother and others came back. Su Yanli exchanged a few words with Gu Hengsheng, then went upstairs to change his clothes and went to the kitchen.
Su Xi and Gu Hengsheng were chatting and laughing happily. Gu Qingyue was playing with her phone, listening to their conversation intermittently. Suddenly, the topic turned to her, and Su Xi asked her, "Qingyue, are you going back to school later?"
Gu Qingyue didn't understand and just hummed vaguely.
Su Xi said, "It just so happens that your third uncle lives near S University. I'll ask your third uncle to take you there later. Mr. Gu, do you mind?"
Gu Qingyue originally wanted to say that she could take the bus back by herself, but then she heard Gu Hengsheng say, "Okay."
Su Yanli quickly prepared several dishes and invited them to the table.
Su Yanli smiled politely and said, "It's just a few home-cooked dishes, Mr. Heng, don't mind."
Su Xi leaned close to Gu Qingyue's ear and whispered, "My dad is so good to Aunt Gu. I've grown up so big, and he's never cooked for me. I'm so jealous."
Gu Qingyue smiled and said, "How many dishes should I cook for you on your birthday?"
"You?" Su Xi said noncommittally, "Please spare me, little aunt. You can't even cook instant noodles properly."
Gu Qingyue was disappointed.
After everyone finished dinner, Gu Qingyue went upstairs to pack up and prepare to return to the dormitory.
Gu Hengsheng handed her the gift he had prepared for his mother. His mother smiled and said, "I'm very happy that you can come. Why bother with the formalities?"
Gu Hengsheng: "Just a little token of my appreciation."
Gu's mother didn't open the gift in front of Gu Hengsheng. She just thanked him and accepted it.
Gu Qingyue finished packing her things and came down. Mother Gu looked at her with concern: "Do you feel a little dizzy?"
Gu Qingyue was both amused and annoyed: "Mom, I can drink quite well, don't worry, I only had two glasses."
Mother Gu was a little worried. She glanced at Gu Hengsheng and said, "Hengsheng, please keep an eye on her. I think she's drunk too much."
