Chapter 58

There was a ringing sound outside the door. Gu Qingyue slowly got up and went to open the door.

A hotel attendant stood at the door, holding a gift box. She said gently, "Excuse me for disturbing you. I'd like to ask if this is yours."

That was the tea she was going to give to Uncle Song. Gu Qingyue took the gift box from the waiter and quietly thanked him. She closed the door, placed the gift box on the coffee table, and sat on the carpet, leaning over the cold coffee table.

Song Xiaoshu's words "I hope your confession fails" almost became her inner demon. Gu Qingyue suddenly wanted to call Song Xiaoshu childishly and ask him to take back his words.

Gu Qingyue had her face pressed against the coffee table, almost falling asleep.

The ringing of her cell phone woke her. Her arm was slightly numb. Her fingers groped along the floor until she found the phone and held it up to her face. It was Gu Hengsheng calling. Gu Qingyue's heart pounded, unsure whether to answer the call, fearing bad news.

She took a deep breath before pressing the answer button and said, "Third Uncle."

"Not in the hotel?" he asked.

"Yes, I'm here."

"Then come and open the door." Gu Hengsheng said.

Gu Qingyue stood up and walked to the door. She tiptoed and looked through the peephole. It was him.

She raised her hand to cover the door handle and gently pressed it down. The door opened. Gu Hengsheng looked at her carefully and saw a slightly sunken red mark on the left side of her cheek. Gu Hengsheng pointed at her face and asked, "What's wrong with your face?"

"What?" Gu Qingyue looked at him in confusion.

Gu Qingyue turned and ran into the bathroom, and Gu Hengsheng closed the door.

Gu Qingyue looked at herself in a mirror hanging on the wall. She raised her hand and touched it, saying, "It's probably because I lay on the coffee table just now."

Gu Hengsheng nodded.

Gu Qingyue withdrew her hand from her face. She stared at Gu Hengsheng in the mirror and said softly, "Third Uncle?"

"What's wrong?" Gu Hengsheng also looked at her in the mirror.

Gu Qingyue sighed and said, "Are you here to tell me the result?"

Gu Hengsheng in the mirror slowly walked behind her. Gu Qingyue turned around and looked at him closely.

"Qingyue, I thought you were very smart," he said. "I thought you should understand my answer very well after I came here."

Gu Qingyue said honestly, "Song Xiaoshu wished me a failed confession, so I was afraid you were here to reject me."

"I'm sorry, I'm afraid we can't do as he wishes." Gu Hengsheng said gently.

Gu Qingyue finally breathed a sigh of relief. Her brows relaxed, and she said, "I'm a little hungry."

Gu Hengsheng glanced around the bathroom and said, "Are we sure we want to discuss what to eat here?"

Oh, Gu Qingyue came back to her senses, walked out of the bathroom, and said, "Let's order takeout."

Gu Hengsheng walked to the sofa and took out his phone from his suit jacket draped over the back of the chair. He asked her what she wanted to eat. Gu Qingyue sat on the single sofa, holding her face with her hands, and said, "Something spicy."

Gu Hengsheng ordered hotpot for her. The two of them sat facing each other on a rectangular coffee table piled high with hotpot ingredients. Bubbles were bubbling from the bottom of the butter pot, one by one, like the splashes of water that had not yet broken down after heavy rain hit the ground, just like her mood at the moment, like a transparent blooming flower or gurgling bubbles.

Gu Hengsheng was wearing a white shirt with his cuffs rolled up twice, stacked at his elbows. The thin steam rising from the bottom of the pot made his face look as if covered with a hazy veil, making it difficult to see clearly.

Perhaps she subconsciously couldn't believe it. She had been tossing and turning for this man for many years, and now he was really sitting in front of her, using chopsticks to put her favorite potatoes and lotus root slices into the boiling pot.

Gu Hengsheng couldn't eat spicy food, so he blanched the vegetables in a pot, then filtered them in a porcelain bowl filled with mineral water before putting them in his mouth.

Gu Qingyue asked curiously, "Is this delicious?"

Gu Hengsheng said, "It's OK."

Gu Qingyue followed suit, soaking a potato in water for a while before putting it in her mouth. She frowned and said, "It's not very tasty."

Gu Hengsheng smiled slightly.

Gu Qingyue was in a good mood tonight, and her appetite also gradually improved. She ate for a long time before stopping.

Gu Hengsheng began to clear the dishes from the coffee table. Gu Qingyue followed him with her eyes until she saw him stand up, pack up some leftovers, and throw them into the trash can. Gu Hengsheng naturally noticed her gaze and asked, "Why are you staring at me?"

"I was wondering if you would accidentally get some sauce on your shirt," said Gu Qingyue.

Gu Hengsheng shook his head, seeming helpless.

By the time he had finished cleaning, the coffee table was clean again, but the air still lingered with the aroma of butter from the bottom of a pot. Gu Hengsheng opened a window to disperse the smell from the room.

Gu Qingyue propped her chin on one hand and said, "I offended Song Xiaoshu today. He's probably going to blacklist me."

Gu Hengsheng asked her the reason, and Gu Qingyue told the truth. She mentioned the reason why she asked him in the library whether he liked her. Gu Hengsheng said: "How can you be sure that he will deny it?"

"He is a proud man. He won't admit it until he realizes whether I am really interested in him." Gu Qingyue analyzed.

Gu Hengsheng said: "Qingyue, you are very smart."

"But I can't guess what you're thinking." Gu Qingyue looked up, "I can't guess why you clearly like me but refuse to accept it."

"You have to forgive a 34-year-old man for being hesitant." Gu Hengsheng said.

"What?" she asked.

Gu Hengsheng stared at her for a moment, then slowly spoke, "I don't know if this girl who said she liked me was just a momentary illusion, or if it can last a lifetime. Perhaps after she experiences more, she'll find that I'm not as perfect as she imagined."

"I know you are an ordinary person." Gu Qingyue said, "You told me."

"But you don't really think so." Gu Hengsheng smiled slightly.

"When you like someone, isn't it just because of the filter of 'like'? A white shirt always looks the best and most eye-catching on him, while others look like nine-to-five insurance salesmen when they wear it. You see, liking someone is such a blind but foolish thing." She said with her head tilted.

Gu Hengsheng was stunned for a moment. After a moment, he said, "Qingyue, you see things more clearly than I do."

As he finished speaking, his cell phone, which he had placed on his suit jacket, began to ring. Gu Hengsheng took the phone and pressed the answer button. Gu Qingyue listened and thought it was probably something at work.

He took the phone from his ear, and Gu Qingyue asked, "Are you leaving?"

"yes."

Gu Qingyue watched him put on his coat. She suddenly spoke softly, "Some say that when something seems too good to be true, it probably isn't."

Hearing this, Gu Hengsheng lowered his eyebrows and looked at her.

Suddenly, a shadow fell before her eyes. In an instant, Gu Qingyue felt a warm touch on her forehead. Two seconds later, she realized that it was his lips touching her forehead. He slightly distanced them, and his two hands rested on the armrests of the sofa beside her. He asked, "Does it feel real now?"
