Gong Linglong prepared all the dishes for the evening. She cooked a pot of lotus root and pork bone soup in an earthenware pot, a plate of spicy minced pork and tofu, shredded potatoes with vinegar, stewed cabbage with pork and vermicelli, and the last portion of braised pork belly left over from yesterday's wedding banquet.
The Lu Jingchuan brothers finished cleaning up the three or four acres of land behind the house. When they came back, they were so hungry that their stomachs were growling. They washed their hands and helped serve the dishes to the table for dinner.
"The food cooked by sister-in-law tastes good." Lu Jingyang was the first to praise her.
Lu Jingchuan picked up a piece of meat for his wife, and the corner of his mouth curled up slightly: "Linglong is a good cook. Braised pork belly, red-braised pork and spicy fish fillet are all her specialties. She often makes them at my aunt's house. My aunt and uncle have become picky eaters."
Zhou Lanqin laughed after hearing this. She had been talking to her sister on the phone a lot recently. Her sister always praised her daughter-in-law on the phone. Now it seemed that Linglong had conquered the stomachs of the couple with her cooking skills.
"I'll make spicy fish slices for you tomorrow." Gong Linglong arranged.
There are vast water areas and abundant freshwater fish in Seoul. She chatted with other sisters-in-law in the morning and learned a lot of things.
There is a small market outside the military base. Fish, lotus roots and other vegetables that are abundant here can be bought at any time, but you have to go early to buy pork fat. She plans to buy a fish to eat tomorrow.
"Sister-in-law, less chili."
Lu Jingyang made a small request. He was a native of Kyoto and had a salty and fresh taste. He couldn't stand strong spicy dishes.
Gong Linglong smiled and replied, "Okay, I'll make a less spicy dish for you and mom tomorrow."
The mother and son are busy with work, so they took leave to come here this time. They have decided to return to Beijing tomorrow night, and the next time they meet will probably be during the Chinese New Year.
This time, my mother-in-law brought them a lot of things. In addition to the gifts prepared for her, there were various nutritional supplements such as milk powder, malted milk, brown sugar, etc., as well as a lot of dried fruits, cakes and candies. They are all placed in the bedroom cabinet. These are all for her to eat.
Relationships between people are mutual. If her mother-in-law treats her well, she will try her best to repay her.
The situation is special now. She only has money at her disposal. Her mother-in-law will definitely not accept the money she gives her, so she plans to buy more vegetables tomorrow and let them taste her cooking skills.
After finishing her meal, Bai Shuixian washed the dishes and came out of the kitchen to ask her son-in-law, "Jingchuan, do you have any newspapers at home? I have nothing to do tonight and it's too early to go to bed, so I want to read some."
"Yes, I have a lot in my study."
Lu Jingchuan pushed open the door of the study. There was a desk, bookshelf, and a small bed inside. Lu Jingyang had been sleeping in this room for the past two days. There were many books and newspapers on the bookshelf.
He came out holding a thick stack of newspapers and handed them all to his mother-in-law. "Mom, these are all last year's newspapers. The postman delivers new newspapers every day and puts them in the mailbox next to the gate sentry. You can pick them up anytime."
"OK."
Bai Shuixian took it back to the room, picked out a local Seoul newspaper, and sat back down by the kitchen stove to read it.
Gong Linglong had just returned to her room to tidy up some things. She saw her mother reading a newspaper by the fireplace. She did not go over to disturb her, but sat on the sofa and chatted with her mother-in-law and others.
Lu Jingchuan rarely sees his mother and brother throughout the year, and they don't keep in touch much through letters or phone calls. They are going back to Beijing tomorrow, and he chatted with them for a long time tonight, from work to family, and then to other relatives and friends' families. He chatted until after nine o'clock before going back to his room to sleep.
For newlyweds, night exercise is essential.
Lu Jingchuan had told her this morning that he would test her tonight, so naturally she would try her best. Compared to last night's roughness and excitement, he was obviously much gentler today, and both of them felt the joy of perfect harmony.
When she woke up the next morning, the man next to her had already gotten up to do morning exercises. Gong Linglong immediately got out of bed, washed up, and helped her mother-in-law prepare breakfast.
After breakfast, Gong Linglong was about to go out to buy groceries. Bai Shuixian came out of the house carrying a cloth bag and said to her, "Linglong, you and your mother-in-law go buy groceries. I'm going to the market."
"Mom, what are we going to do in the city?" Gong Linglong asked her.
"I came to Seoul with my parents when I was a kid. We were visiting your grandfather's friend, but it's been so long I've forgotten where his house is. Last night, I was reading a local newspaper in Seoul and saw the place name, and it suddenly reminded me of it. I want to go over and ask around."
"Mom, there's no rush. I'll go with you tomorrow." Gong Linglong was worried about her going out alone.
"No, I'm fine now, you don't have to worry."
Bai Shuixian saw her mother-in-law coming out with a basket and said, "Linglong, you guys go buy some groceries. I'm going to take the bus. If I'm not back for lunch, I won't be back until the afternoon."
Gong Linglong had a hunch that her mother was worried about something and didn't want her to know, and she vaguely guessed that it was related to her grandfather's family.
Since she didn't want to talk, I didn't force her. I just reminded her: "Mom, please carry more money and bills with you. Wear a cotton hat and scarf, don't catch a cold in the wind."
"Don't worry."
Bai Shuixian smiled faintly, said something to Zhou Lanqin, and went out with the cloth bag.
The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law went out together, but Lu Jingyang did not go with them. After breakfast, he went back to his room to read.
The small market is not big, and most of the people who come here to buy vegetables are military family members. Gong Linglong bought two pounds of pork belly, all the pig stomachs and offal, and also picked a grass carp weighing about three pounds and bought a few lotus roots.
After buying groceries, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law went home together. When they passed by the river, they saw the political commissar's youngest son, Hu Zi, fishing with a fishing rod. Gong Linglong walked up to him and asked, "Hu Zi, did you catch anything?"
"I caught a crucian carp."
Hu Zi is eight or nine years old. He usually goes to school. Today is the weekend and he has no classes. His biggest hobby is fishing.
