During the May Day holiday, Wen Yinyin and her three roommates went to travel to the Miao village.
The bus drove along the mountain road for four hours, shaking and wobbling, and finally arrived at the destination.
"Yinyin, don't sleep anymore. We have arrived at our destination." Jiang Jing said as she shook Yinyin's arm.
"Do not touch me!"
Wen Yinyin pushed Jiang Jing's hand away violently, and her forehead hit the front seat as she jumped up from her seat.
She was gasping for breath, her pupils contracted violently, and cold sweat had soaked through the T-shirt on the back.
The pain in her dream, as if thousands of insects were gnawing at her heart, was too real, as if countless tiny poisonous insects were still crawling in her blood vessels.
"What's wrong? Did you have a nightmare?" Jiang Jing rubbed the back of his hand that was red from being slapped and looked at her in confusion.
My roommate Wang Meilan, who was sitting next to me, also stretched her neck to look over.
Wen Yinyin didn't answer, her eyes were fixed on the car window.
The setting sun dyed the rolling tea hills blood red, and the scattered stilt houses in the distance were looming in the twilight.
She was too familiar with this scene: the century-old locust tree at the end of the bluestone road, the village gate with red lanterns hanging on it, and even the special smell of herbs and damp wood wafting in the air.
"Is this a Miao village?"
Jiang Jing, who was standing next to him, took out her phone to take a photo and said with a smile, "Yinyin, did you sleep like a fool?"
"Isn't this the place you've been planning for half a month?"
Wen Yinyin quickly took out her cell phone and checked the time.
May 1, 2025.
This date hit her chest like a heavy hammer. She clearly remembered that this day in her previous life was the beginning of her nightmare.
Goosebumps suddenly appeared all over my body.
"Hurry up, let's get out of here!" She suddenly grabbed Jiang Jing and Wang Meilan's wrists with such force that they both cried out in pain.
"What's wrong with you?" Wang Meilan shook her hand off. "We bought tickets for this trip two months in advance, and now you're leaving right after we've arrived?"
"We've arrived!" the driver shouted impatiently, "Everyone, take your luggage and get off the bus!"
Wen Yinyin rushed to the driver's seat and said, "Master, take us back to the county town. I'll pay double the fare!"
"Student, there's only one bus here a day." The driver lit a cigarette, looked at her pale face through the smoke, and said, "The return bus won't leave until 8 o'clock tomorrow morning."
"I can increase the money, triple! Five times!" Wen Yinyin's voice was filled with tears.
The driver waved his hands impatiently: "I won't drive even if you pay more. Driving on this mountain road at night can be fatal." After saying that, he got out of the car with a kettle.
"What's wrong with you?" Jiang Jing stopped Wen Yinyin who was trying to catch up. "You've been sleeping like a dead person since you got in the car, and now you're acting crazy again when you wake up."
Wen Yinyin took a deep breath and said, "What I'm about to say may be ridiculous, but please believe me—I'm reborn."
"We came here in our previous life, and then..." Her voice choked, the memories were too painful.
"Anyway, we're going to encounter something terrible. Let's go..."
"Have you read too many novels?" Wang Meilan rolled her eyes, picked up her suitcase and walked out, muttering, "Really? You clearly planned to come here, and now you're making a scene. Who's going to dare to hang out with you in the future? You're such a bummer!"
"I'm telling the truth!" Wen Yinyin shouted loudly.
Seeing that the two were about to quarrel, Jiang Jing hurriedly acted as a peacemaker.
She put her arm around Wen Yinyin and said, "Okay, we're here now, the rooms are already booked, and there's no car to go back. Let's stay here tonight."
"If you don't think it's fun here tomorrow, why don't we leave again?"
Seeing that the driver had already gone far away, Wen Yinyin had no choice but to get out of the car.
The three of them dragged their suitcases to the B&B.
This B&B is located halfway up the mountain. Along the way, Wen Yinyin looked around nervously and was extremely scared.
After checking in at the B&B, the three of them walked towards their rooms.
The room was on the second floor. Wen Yinyin stepped on the wooden floor of the B&B, and the creaking sound reminded her of her previous life...
After being poisoned by Yaxuan with a love curse, she rolled and banged her head on the wooden floor in unbearable pain when the spell broke out, while Yaxuan just stood there watching coldly, as if admiring his masterpiece.
"Wow, it's so beautiful!" Wang Meilan stood on the balcony of the B&B and took photos. "But there's no signal. Do you have internet on your phone?"
Wen Yinyin curled up on the wooden bed, hugging her legs. Her voice trembled, "There's only a signal on the top of the mountain...but don't go there."
She remembered it very clearly. In her previous life, she went up the mountain alone to look for a signal, and then met Yaxuan.
He wore an ebony-carved animal mask and nine silver bells hung from his waist, which chimed with every step they took.
“Bang, bang, bang!”
The sudden knock on the door made Wen Yinyin tremble all over.
"Girls, there is a Nuo opera performance in the village tonight. Do you want to go and watch it?" The proprietress's voice with a heavy accent came through the door.
"No!" Wen Yinyin quickly refused.
"It's free." The proprietress outside the door continued.
"I told you we won't go!" Wen Yinyin yelled angrily.
"Okay, if you don't want to go, then don't go. Why are you so fierce?" The proprietress of the inn outside the door turned around and left angrily.
Jiang Jing looked at Wen Yinyin in confusion.
"Yinyin, when we're out there, harmony is the most important thing. Could you please not be like this?"
Wang Meilan picked up her bag and walked towards the door.
"If you don't go, I will. You can't see this kind of original performance in the city!"
"Don't go!" Wen Yinyin jumped off the bed to stop her. "Those people wearing masks aren't performing at all. They're selecting people to cast spells on!"
