Chapter 1 Jade Buddha Pendant

The vast, desolate desert exudes a sense of bleakness.

"Ring..." A bell rang.

A slender, long hand with distinct knuckles took out a phone from behind her waist and glanced at the caller ID.

"Tsk!" A simple interjection revealed the phone owner's impatience.

"Speak," a clear, slightly hoarse female voice rang out.

She leaned back slightly against the SUV behind her, which was taller than her. The driver's side door was half open, and the woman curled up one leg, propping it against the car frame. She casually threw her blood-stained white gloves onto the corpse not far away.

The woman was tall and slender, with her long, thick black hair styled high. She wore black desert boots, and her straight legs and curvaceous figure were completely covered by her black outfit. Although nothing was exposed, it was enough to make people unable to look away.

She wore sunglasses on her small, oval face, which covered most of it. A red mark was vaguely visible under her eyes, but it was hard to tell if it was blood or something else.

A moment later, the woman gave a faint "hmm" and then hung up the phone.

The woman's slightly upturned red lips looked fiery and passionate, but the words she spoke were devoid of any emotion.

"S City, Ning Family Residence."

As soon as she finished speaking, the woman turned around and got into the driver's seat. The next second, the SUV shot off like an arrow and disappeared into the vast desert.

The dust kicked up by the car settled again, covering all the marks.

Those who are too dead to be alive will remain here, to be devoured by passing wild animals, and disappear into this vast desert.

Night falls.

S City is ablaze with lights and bustling with traffic; people's nightlife is just beginning.

Earl's Palace is the most famous hotel in S City, and also one of the biggest money pits.

Luxury cars lined the outside of the Earl's Palace tonight, as bigwigs from both the political and business worlds arrived one after another.

"Mr. Xu, it's been a long time!"

"Minister Li, you're too kind!"

"please!"

The top floor of the Earl's Imperial Palace was booked out by the Ning family of S City today, and all the bigwigs who arrived one after another gathered on the top floor.

"I heard that the Ning family's youngest daughter has been found?"

"Yes, this banquet today is to welcome her back!"

Someone curled their lip and said sourly, "I wonder which remote corner she grew up in. She's lucky to have been found by the Ning family. She's practically become a phoenix overnight!"

"You're jealous? Well, then you can only be jealous. Who told you you weren't destined for that!"

The person being mocked retorted angrily, "That's the Ning family! Aren't you jealous?"

Amidst the commotion and chatter of the others, Ning Yao muttered, "Boring!"

Her voice wasn't particularly loud, but it wasn't particularly soft either; yet, the other person still heard it.

The group turned around and saw a woman dressed in black.

Seeing that the other party wasn't wearing formal attire to the banquet, he gave them a disdainful look. "How did you sneak in? This is the Ning family's banquet!"

Ning Yao tilted her head, propped her chin up with her hand, and looked like a well-behaved girl: "I know, the Ning family invited me."

The other party scoffed: "Come on, the Ning family invited you? If the Ning family invited you, why aren't you wearing a formal suit? Why are you dressed so casually?"

Ning Yao asked, "Is there a rule that says we can't dress like this?"

The other person was speechless for a moment, then continued, "You'd better leave now. The old lady of the Ning family dislikes people who don't know the rules. Don't get thrown out again!"

Ning Yao smiled slightly, her eyes sparkling: "Dare to make a bet with me?"

"What are we betting on?"

"If the Ning family invited me, then... then you can give me this necklace, okay?"

The other party hesitated a bit. This necklace was a newly released model, and she had begged her boyfriend for a long time to buy it for her.

If I lose the bet to this girl... On second thought, what kind of status does the Ning family have? If I expose her and gain their favor, what necklace can't I have?

"Okay! I'll bet you!"

Ning Yao glanced behind her out of the corner of her eye, then raised her pink lips and said, "You lost."

"Young Miss, the old lady requests your presence."

He is the Ning family's housekeeper.

Ning Yao stood up, her figure slender and her back straight, her hands in her shirt pockets: "Let's go!"

Under the stunned gazes of everyone, Ning Yao left with Butler Ning.

As she passed by the crowd, Ning Yuan paused slightly, turned her head to look at the other person, and said, "Remember to deliver the necklace to the Ning family."

"She...she..."

Some people watched the play, while others turned pale.

The lights suddenly turned on.

"Ladies and gentlemen! Thank you all for taking time out of your busy schedules to attend our Ning family's banquet."

All eyes were focused on the stage.

"As you all know, this banquet is to welcome my granddaughter back to the Ning family! Yao Yao, come here."

Grandma Ning looked at Ning Yao with loving eyes, and at the same time, the light shone on Ning Yao as Grandma Ning looked at her.

Then, everyone saw the mysterious eldest daughter of the Ning family.

He looked about sixteen or seventeen years old, dressed like a high school student.

Ning Yao's slightly furrowed brows revealed a hint of impatience.

With Grandma Ning's expectation, Ning Yao lifted her long legs and walked to her side.

If it weren't for what Old Madam Ning had, she would never have stepped into the Ning family home.

The organization behind Ning Yao had already thoroughly investigated what kind of people the Ning family was.

She knew why the Ning family wanted her back—it was simply for the power behind her.

She appeared at the Ning family this time only for something that should have belonged to her.

Grandma Ning took out a wooden box, and Ning Yao's gaze changed instantly.

She watched intently as Old Madam Ning took out a dark jade Buddha pendant.

Grandma Ning put the pendant around her neck and then announced, "This is my granddaughter Ning Yao!"

Whether it was genuine or not, the applause from the audience was thunderous.

Ning Yao was completely unaffected; her attention was entirely focused on the jade Buddha pendant.

When Grandma Ning saw that she was distracted, a hint of dissatisfaction appeared on her face.

"Yaoyao? Say hello to everyone?"

Ning Yao raised her eyes, glanced at the people below the stage, and parted her pink lips slightly: "Hello everyone, I am Ning Yao, but... I am not a member of the Ning family!"

The atmosphere was tense, and even the smile on Old Madam Ning's face was forced: "Yaoyao, don't be stubborn. This jade Buddha is a family heirloom of the Ning family. You should wear it..."

"I've said it before, I am Ning Yao, not a member of the Ning family, or rather, the real Ning Yao is already dead, or perhaps this so-called Ning family heirloom is something you stole from Ning Yao?"

The banquet hall was completely silent.

Is this shocking news just something the girl is making up, or is it really a scandal involving the Ning family?

"Ning Yao! What nonsense are you talking about?" The Ning family members rushed forward.

Ning Yao fiddled with the jade Buddha pendant and took two steps back.

Her peach blossom eyes looked at the crowd with a seemingly indifferent expression: "Whether I'm talking nonsense or not, you all know best. This young lady is not playing with you anymore!"
