Chapter 103 Nighttime Investigation of a "Haunted" House

After the slave trader left, Zhilan looked at Ningyao with some worry.

“Miss, I think the slave trader makes sense. Although I don’t know if the thing is real or fake, it’s really not appropriate for you to go there at night, is it?”

Ning Yao raised an eyebrow: "You'll come with me tonight!"

Zhilan couldn't help but widen her eyes: "Miss..."

That night, Ning Yao handed Zhilan a set of night clothes: "Change into these."

Zhilan looked at the night clothes in her hand, and then at Ningyao, who was already dressed.

"Miss, are you really going? I'm a little afraid of ghosts..."

Ning Yao flicked her forehead: "With me here, what are you worried about? Hurry up, or I won't take you with me next time there's something fun to do."

Upon hearing this, Zhilan quickly changed into her night clothes: "Miss, I'm ready!"

Ning Yao looked at the pendant around her neck and said, "When you come back, I'll give you another treasure."

Zhilan exclaimed with delight, "Thank you so much, Miss!"

Under the cover of night, the master and servant left the manor and headed towards Licheng.

The three courtyards of Licheng.

Neither Old Madam Jiang nor Chen Xuanrong had a good night's sleep for several days.

At night, they would tremble all over, terrified to the extreme.

Chen Xuanrong's eyes were full of resentment: "Grandmother, why won't Brother Lin let us change our place of residence? He was obviously tricked by that slave trader. No one can stand it if it's like this every day! Look at your health, which you finally recovered from, you've lost a lot of weight again."

Madam Jiang was also exhausted, but she was in a slightly better condition than Chen Xuanrong.

At least, although I heard that sound every night, nothing ever happened.

After living here for a while, I've actually started to get used to it.

However, what Xuanrong said was indeed the truth. How could anyone possibly live in such a haunted house? That would be too heartless!

My body has been quite fatigued lately, and I'm even a little too tired to pay attention to the sound.

"Grandma will talk to him again tomorrow. There will only be voices, nothing strange. You can sleep with Grandma, it's fine."

Chen Xuanrong nodded obediently: "Then I will listen to my grandmother."

Despite saying that, Chen Xuanrong was still determined to cause trouble for the brokerage firm tomorrow.

Before my thoughts could settle, that familiar voice rang out on time.

"Let me out!"

"Chen Sheng! Let me out!"

"Chen Sheng! You'll die a horrible death!"

The screams were a mix of crying and laughter, sometimes near, sometimes far.

Startled by the shrill scream, Chen Xuanrong hid behind Old Madam Jiang, unwilling to come out.

Madam Jiang was also surprised. Why was tonight different?

Before, it only cried, but tonight the voice actually spoke?

His hands, which had just been comforting Chen Xuanrong, began to tremble again, his heart once more filled with fear.

When Ning Yao and her companion arrived at the residence, it was already past midnight.

As soon as I entered the house, I felt a chilly wind rising from the ground. It's already April, and the weather shouldn't be this cold.

Zhilan's teeth chattered: "Miss, I feel something is wrong."

They hadn't taken two steps when a cry reached their ears.

Zhilan's hands and feet went numb instantly, and she said in a trembling voice, "Miss, it's true!"

Ning Yao said, "I heard that. How can you be so cowardly? Weren't you quite fierce when you were killing the refugees before?"

Zhilan was almost in tears: "Miss, this is different. I can beat the refugees, but I can't beat this thing!"

"How do you know you can't win if you don't try? Let's go!"

He grabbed Zhilan's hand and followed the sound.

After passing through the first courtyard and entering the second, the crying became even clearer, and everyone could hear exactly what the other person was saying.

"Chen Sheng! How could you be so heartless!"

"Chen Sheng! I won't let you get away with this!"

"Chen Sheng! I was wrong, I'll never do it again..."

The crying was somewhat incoherent, sometimes shrill and vicious, sometimes sorrowful and pitiful.

Standing at the second entrance, Ning Yao felt the sound coming from all directions, making her unable to distinguish directions for a moment.

Zhilan swallowed hard and tugged at Ningyao's sleeve: "Miss, is this female ghost crazy? I can't understand what she's saying."

Ning Yao, with her sharp eyes, made the most of her night vision: "It's quite pitiful. Not only is he dead, but he's also a dead madman."

He raised his right hand, casually read a few words, and the feeling of being surrounded by crying instantly disappeared.

Only one direction remained, from which the sound of crying could be heard.

Ning Yao pinpointed the direction: "Let's go! It's over there!"

Using his light-footed skills, he rushed from the entrance of the second courtyard directly towards the source of the sound.

The black of the night-clothes blends seamlessly with the darkness, but tonight, with the moonlight, the outline is still discernible.

Just as Ning Yao was using her lightness skill, Jiang Shilin, who was rushing to Old Madam Jiang's residence, caught a glimpse of her.

With just one glance, Jiang Shilin felt as if he were facing a formidable enemy, filled with panic.

The woman's mournful cries filled the air, and figures flashed before my eyes, further confirming the fact that the house was haunted.

Jiang Shilin suppressed his fear and hurried to Old Madam Jiang's courtyard.

Ning Yao led Zhi Lan straight to the source of the sound, which was a courtyard.

"Miss, is this... an ancestral hall?"

Ning Yao was also somewhat surprised.

The incoherent babbling continued, but now they were only a door away.

Ning Yao was about to push the door open when Zhi Lan stopped her.

"Miss, look at that window over there."

Ning Yao turned her head and was shocked to find a woman's silhouette reflected in the window, which was quite eerie.

"It's just a silhouette, don't be afraid."

The ancestral hall door was locked with a lock. Ning Yao examined it for a moment and found that the lock was also unusual. Although it was made of iron, it contained traces of spiritual energy!

Ning Yao placed her hand on it and drew away all the spiritual energy, causing the iron lock to open automatically.

To her surprise, she discovered that a spirit stone was actually wrapped inside the iron lock!

There are quite a few spirit stones in Licheng, from the basement of the manor to the doors of the ancestral hall.

Once the lock is opened, the door opens with a simple push.

The moment the door opened, the piercing cries abruptly ceased.

Ning Yao's lips curled up slightly. It seemed that this "ghost" wasn't entirely without reason after all.

Ning Yao stepped inside, and Zhi Lan quickly followed, saying, "Miss, wait for me."

The ancestral hall was covered in a thick layer of dust, and your feet would leave marks when you stepped on it.

Ning Yao looked around the room and saw that there were no memorial tablets or incense sticks that should have been placed there, only old incense ash.

Even the altar was in a mess, clearly because it hadn't been cleaned for years.

However, the further in you go, the less dust there is on the ground, as if someone has been walking by from time to time, and you can still vaguely see a few footprints.

The room was dimly lit, and the tattered curtains fluttered gently, creating an eerie atmosphere.

Zhilan's face was deathly pale; it seemed she was truly afraid of ghosts.

"Miss... there's nobody here...!!!"

With a loud bang, the door behind her slammed shut, startling Zhilan into a scream.

After the piercing cries ceased, the front yard was able to catch its breath, and Old Madam Jiang had just breathed a sigh of relief when Zhilan's screams made them jump to their throats again.
