Chapter 3 The Crimson-Clad Ghost

This period of confinement lasted for two years. Ning Yao had just turned sixteen when the army returned to the capital.

However, it was not a victory, but a defeat.

It wasn't that they lost to an enemy state, but rather that the court was controlled by powerful relatives of the emperor, and that enemy states were eyeing them covetously. Most importantly, the emperor had disappeared, leaving the Yan state leaderless.

With the capital city falling, the imperial palace is in grave danger.

Ning Yao had been living peacefully in the Cold Palace since entering the palace. With the support of the Duke of Zhenguo's mansion, her life wasn't too bad.

Upon hearing the news of the city's fall, the young girl wanted to escape, but before anyone from the Duke of Zhenguo's mansion could arrive, she tripped over her own feet and fell to her death as she exited the Cold Palace.

Ning Yao had only read this far in the novel, which meant that even without her transmigrating, the original owner of this body would have been killed by falling at the age of sixteen.

The original owner did indeed fall into a lotus pond when she was thirteen years old, but she did not die, otherwise there would have been no storyline of her entering the palace later.

As for why Ning Yao would transmigrate into the book at this critical juncture, she herself couldn't figure it out.

It is now the sixth year of the Yan calendar, the sixth year since the emperor ascended the throne, and the sixth year since my elder sister Ningqiong entered the palace.

According to the plot, Ning Qiong will give birth to a stillborn child two months later and perish in a fire three months later.

Six months later, when Ning Yao turned fourteen, she entered the palace.

Two years after entering the palace, the emperor disappeared, and the Yan Kingdom was destroyed.

Ning Yao, who was squatting in the corner, was extremely annoyed and frustrated. She couldn't help but curse, "Damn it, what a mess this is!"

Suddenly she discovered that she could speak.

After thinking it over, Ning Yao decided to go back first. In her current state, she couldn't go far by herself.

Although she was a special agent in her past life, she has now transmigrated into a ten-year-old girl, and while she is willing, she is powerless.

Ning Yao stood up from the corner, preparing to go find someone.

As soon as I stood up, I noticed something unusual on my neck.

She reached out and touched it for a while, then pulled out a pendant. Through the dim candlelight, she could vaguely make out the shape of a jade Buddha.

"You transmigrated into a book too? Or were you originally the original owner's possession?"

No one gave her an answer, so she could only carefully put the jade pendant away and slowly walk towards the mourning hall.

Little did they know, the funeral hall was already in complete chaos.

When the servants on night watch were adding incense and paper money, they discovered that the body of the Third Miss, who should have been lying there, had vanished.

The servant was terrified and scrambled out to warn others.

The entire Zhenguo Duke's mansion is in complete chaos.

Duke Ning Wenyi ordered his men to seal the gates of his mansion and conduct a thorough investigation. His wife also cried so much that she fainted several times.

"Ning Wenyi! If Yao Yao's body isn't found, I'm divorcing you!"

The lady's harsh words made Ning Wenyi's face turn as black as the bottom of a pot.

The palace was unaware of this news, and he dared not tell his eldest daughter.

My eldest daughter is eight months pregnant and about to give birth. She is in a very dangerous situation, like walking on a knife's edge.

They could only notify Ning Jin, the second son, who was stationed at the camp outside Beijing.

Ning Jin received the news of her sister's death in the afternoon, and had just returned from the outskirts of Beijing.

As soon as he entered the door, he sensed something was wrong. When he asked, he learned that his sister's body had disappeared.

Everyone in the Duke of Zhenguo's mansion was in a state of fear.

They could not bear the Duke's wrath, but the disappearance of the Third Miss's body was an even stranger thing.

What else could it be but a ghost story?

Ning Yao staggered to the mourning hall and, after looking around for a while, finally understood what had happened.

It seems there's been a huge misunderstanding.

Headache!

Are you looking for me?

A hoarse yet somewhat familiar voice rang out in the mourning hall.

The candlelight flickered, casting indistinct shadows on everyone's faces.

The air was filled with the smell of scraps of paper and burning incense.

Everyone turned their heads and saw a woman dressed in red, with disheveled hair and a pale face, standing at the doorway covered with white cloth.

It was none other than the missing Third Miss, Ning Yao.

Screams erupted immediately.

"A ghost!"

"I told you I shouldn't wear red!"

"The Third Miss has turned into a vengeful ghost!"

The servants scattered and fled.

Ning Wenyi's heart skipped a beat. He suppressed his fear, protected his wife and children, swallowed hard, and asked, "Daughter, do you have any unfulfilled wishes? You can tell your father and mother in their dreams. There's no need to use this method."

That's fucking terrifying!

Waaaaah...

Ning Yao rolled her eyes and took two steps forward.

But to his father, Wen Yi, it was terrifying.

"Daughter...daughter, don't come any closer. Let's talk about it in our dreams. Your parents will fulfill all your requests, okay?"

Ning Wenyi was almost in tears.

What the hell is going on?!

Ning Yao was extremely irritated by her headache.

"I... cough, I'm not dead, nor am I a ghost, much less a vengeful ghost in red, do you understand?"

Ning Wenyi was stunned: "You're not dead?"

Before Ning Wenyi could speak again, Madam Ning pushed him aside, saying, "Don't block my way!"

The next second, she rushed straight towards Ning Yao: "My precious daughter, thank goodness you're not dead! Thank goodness you're not dead! Thank God!"

Madam Ning was both crying and laughing, extremely excited.

When she lunged at her, Ning Yao instinctively tried to dodge.

This is a habit I carried over from my past life as a secret agent.

If someone lunges at you, it will be considered an attack.

However, though the thought crossed her mind, she didn't move her body, and was thus embraced tightly by Madam Ning.

The woman's pleasant scent enveloped her in an instant.

Ning Yao stood there blankly as she was held, unable to discern her own feelings.

"Perhaps the original owner thought her mother wouldn't hurt her?" Ning Yao comforted herself in this way.

Ning Wenyi's gaze was complex.

Of course, he was happy that his daughter was alive, but it was still very strange to see his wife holding their daughter, who looked like a ghost.

"Ahem, Madam, why don't you release Yao Yao first, and then we can call a doctor to examine her?"

Madam Ning released Ning Yao and instead gripped her hand tightly with her own.

"They're all quacks! My precious daughter isn't dead, but he said she was! If Yao Yao hadn't woken up on her own, we would have killed our own daughter with our own hands!"

"Ning Wenyi, you have to give me an explanation! Find out who sent that quack doctor! Otherwise, I'm taking Yaoyao and divorcing you!"

Ning Yao fell silent. This lady is not a quack doctor, and your daughter is indeed dead.

Ning Wenyi, a forty-year-old man and a dignified Duke of Zhenguo, forced himself to wear a bitter expression.

"Madam, can you be reasonable? Who could have sent this doctor? And who would want to harm our daughter? At most, it was a misdiagnosis!"

For some reason, Ning Wenyi felt that his wife was having more and more conspiracy theories in her head.

Madam Ning snorted coldly, pulled Ning Yao away, and ignored the father and son.

Ning Jin sighed: "It's good that my little sister is alright. Father, just go along with Mother's wishes. She's been living in fear every day because of my eldest sister's situation these past few years. If things get too bad, you can send a petition to the palace and ask my eldest sister to send an imperial physician to examine my little sister."
