A flash of light and shadow suddenly appeared in the passage ahead, startling me.
The thing was moving very fast, so fast that it only flashed by, and I didn't even see what it was. But I was certain that it wasn't the light from a flashlight.
Seeing that I was looking towards the passage, Jiang Man turned around and pointed her gun behind us defensively, while asking, "Did you see what that thing was just now?"
"No, it's too fast."
I stared at the dark passage ahead, my throwing knife ready to be thrown at any moment: "That light was green, which reminded me of something I encountered before."
Jiang Man replied without hesitation, "You mean, the green skeletons in the secret passage."
"That's right!"
I nodded: "The light that flashed inside just now was exactly the same as the light emitted by those green skeletons we saw before, it was also that kind of light that wasn't dazzling."
Jiang Man hesitated, then asked, "You mean... there's... that kind of thing inside?"
"It's also possible that there was some kind of mechanism inside that happened to trap the body."
When Jiang Man called me earlier, we both saw light coming from the passage at intervals of about three seconds. Now, after waiting for about thirty seconds, there has been no movement from inside.
I ripped the cloth off the flashlight head and shone it inside. I could only see the wall at the end. After thinking for a moment, I said to Jiang Man, "You stay outside. I'll go in and check."
Let's go together.
Jiang Man looked around at the surroundings with some unease: "There are many forks in the road here. If something happens, we can help each other if we're together."
"Alright."
I was also worried about leaving Jiang Man out alone, so we discussed it for a moment and then walked forward together.
This passage is about ten meters long, and at the end, there is a horizontal corridor.
This corridor, like the passageway we just walked through, is half a meter wide, and the walls can be seen from three meters away on both sides.
Simple and spacious, everything can be seen at a glance, with absolutely no light source.
But Jiang Man and I both clearly saw something flash by here.
I knew there must be other passages on both sides, so I made a mark on the wall and then led Jiang Man to the right corridor.
Just as we were about to reach the corner, Jiang Man suddenly shone her flashlight on the wall in front of us: "Duan Shenxing, look there!"
Actually, even without Jiang Man saying it, I had already noticed what was happening earlier.
The wall directly in front of us was covered in bright red blood, and judging from the marks, it had all splattered from the left corner.
The sudden appearance of bloodstains in the building made Jiang Man and me tense, and we slowly walked towards the corner.
As I moved forward, I also mentally prepared myself, imagining whether a monster or a bloodied corpse would rush out from around the corner.
The blood on the wall in front of us had flowed down heavily, but it had dried, indicating that the blood had been there for some time and had turned dark brown, meaning it had been there for at least an hour.
As I approached the corner, I instinctively leaned back and simultaneously made a throwing motion as if to launch a knife.
As I leaned forward, Jiang Man also raised her gun behind me, pointing it forward, ready to deal with any potential dangers.
Our heightened state of mind was met with a carpet of bright red blood.
The half-meter-wide corridor in front was completely stained red with blood. The blood on the ground had not completely congealed, but a layer of dark brown film had formed on the surface. The walls on both sides were also covered with bits of flesh, bones, teeth, fingernails, and the like.
It looked as if someone had been crushed, with blood and flesh splattered everywhere, yet there was no complete corpse, not even a single intact bone.
"Duan Shenxing, look here!"
Jiang Man shone her flashlight on the blood-stained ground, where there was a trail of drag marks and a clear handprint.
Jiang Man squatted down and compared her palm to the mark: "It's much bigger than my hand, it looks like a man's hand!"
I looked at the broken bones stuck to the wall and cautiously looked ahead: "When we encountered the hairy monster in the fluorescent forest before, that guy was eating people. The scene was similar to this place, with bloodstains everywhere, but we didn't see any bodies!"
Jiang Man looked at the wall stained blackish-brown with blood, then turned her gaze to me: "I've also seen the kind of monster you mentioned. Assuming it was it that did this, how do you explain the light we just saw?"
I tried to speculate: "If the fluorescent forest and skeletons we saw were caused by radiation, then there might be something similar in this tomb passage. Could it be that the hairy monster got some kind of glowing substance on it?"
Jiang Man clearly didn't want to linger in this blood-stained corridor any longer: "Shall we go ahead and continue checking?"
I crouched down and used my knife to pick up a black strip of cloth from the bloody skin: "Judging from the material, it should be the clothes of those people from Ping'an Village, which means they think the same way as me. There's even a possibility that they came here following Duan Jinyan. If there really is a hairy monster here, that thing should have lived here for a long time. Following its trail might lead us to a way out."
Jiang Man nodded: "Firearms can effectively kill that kind of monster, I'll go first."
"Let me do it!"
Looking at the marks on the ground, I took the initiative to walk forward: "I've seen your marksmanship before. Following behind you can provide me with cover."
The blood beneath our feet was only a dry surface layer, making it slippery to walk on. The drag marks were still very obvious, and the blood had not congealed. It was left by the very thing we had just seen.
Because the ground was slippery and something had just run past, I wasn't very alert and was trying to maintain my balance.
Just as I was about to reach the end of the road, I suddenly felt my feet sink.
At first I thought I had stepped on some kind of scrap of meat, but then I felt a vibration under my feet, like I had stepped on a light bulb.
When Jiang Man saw me stop, she thought I had seen something, so she turned to the side and pointed her gun at the corner in front of me: "What happened?"
"I think I've stepped on a trap."
I looked down at the blood-stained ground beneath my feet: "The floor here isn't made of solid bluestone. That monster has lived here for a long time and probably knows how to avoid it, but I still got hit!"
"Clap clap clap!"
Just as I was speaking, a sound came from the passageway behind the corner, which sounded like someone running barefoot.
