Chapter 143 A Friend

The sweet conversation between the two ended when Minzhi knocked on the door to call them to dinner.

Lu Yuzhi pulled Li Peiyu into the restaurant and carefully chose two adjacent seats to sit down.

"Let go. You're so old, why are you still holding your sister's hand?" Old Master Lu frowned, glaring at Lu Yuzhi with eyes that seemed to spit fire.

Lu Yuzhi reluctantly let go, glaring at Old Master Lu, and muttered to himself: Here we go again. Is this show never going to end?

"Daughter, come sit next to your father." Grandpa Lu greeted Li Peiyu with a smile.

"Yes," Li Peiyu said with a smile, obediently sitting down.

Grandpa Lu was overjoyed and kept putting food on Li Peiyu's plate. His caring manner warmed Li Peiyu's heart.

He had previously threatened her to leave Lu Yuzhi, but after developing Alzheimer's, he treated her like a treasure.

After the meal, Lu Yuzhi was about to get up to go to the company when he was loudly stopped by Old Master Lu.

"Where are you going? Dad's off today, you stay home with me. You're not allowed to go anywhere. Going out will only cause trouble." Old Master Lu's tone was firm and brooked no argument.

"If I don't go, who will handle the group's affairs?" Lu Yuzhi said anxiously.

"Of course I'll take care of the company's affairs, I don't need a little brat like you," Old Master Lu said nonchalantly, waving his hand dismissively.

Now, Lu Yuzhi is forever fourteen years old in Grandpa Lu's eyes.

Lu Yuzhi thought for a moment, then had a sudden inspiration and said, "I'll go to school."

"What school are you going to during winter break?" Old Master Lu looked at him angrily.

“I’m going to tutoring,” Lu Yuzhi answered without hesitation.

"You? Tutoring?" Old Master Lu looked incredulous and scoffed.

"Yes, I've changed, I'm more positive now," Lu Yuzhi said confidently, puffing out his chest.

"Really? Xiao Chen, that's wonderful, wonderful! Go, go, study hard." Upon hearing this, Grandpa Lu beamed with joy and quickly waved for him to go.

Lu Yuzhi was about to get into the car when he suddenly stopped and said in a low voice to Li Peiyu, who was standing aside watching the scene with a hint of mockery, "Come here."

Li Peiyu was slightly taken aback, then slowly walked over.

Lu Yuzhi's face was cold and stern, but his eyes looked at her pitifully, his voice almost pleading: "Are you really going to see Guo Jiahe today?"

"Yes, it's a promise." Li Peiyu nodded.

"We agreed that it could be canceled. Can we go another day?" Lu Yuzhi's voice was urgent, and his brows were tightly furrowed.

"Lu Yuzhi, stop dragging me along like a timid wife. Don't you have to go to work too?"

"I... I've canceled so many jobs to see you before." Lu Yuzhi's emotions were a little agitated, and his voice unconsciously rose a few decibels. "When you said you were desperately thirsty, didn't I rush to find you halfway through the meeting? When you hosted the party and said you wanted me to come, didn't I immediately drop what I was doing and rush to find you? What's wrong with you canceling one job for me? Is it that hard?"

"Keep your voice down, everyone can hear you."

"I'm not afraid of others hearing. Anyway, you're not allowed to go. You stay home and wait for me."

Seeing Lu Yuzhi's agitated yet pitiful state, Li Peiyu's heart softened, and she said, "Okay. I'll cancel."

Upon hearing this, a hint of surprise flashed in Lu Yuzhi's eyes, and his dim gaze immediately brightened.

"My husband's going to work, I want to give him a goodbye kiss."

Li Peiyu glanced at Grandpa Lu and said, "Grandpa will get angry again if he sees this. I'm your older sister now."

"Hey, come in, sister." Lu Yuzhi pulled Li Peiyu into the car, kissed her excitedly for a while, and then reluctantly let go.

He looked at Li Peiyu with eyes so tender they seemed to melt, and said, "From now on, let's stay together. Let's never separate."

“Mmm,” Li Peiyu replied with deep affection in her eyes.

After seeing Lu Yu off, Li Peiyu sent a message to Guo Jiahe, saying she would visit her another day.

Just as I was about to go to the company, Lu Yuzhi called again.

Li Peiyu pressed the answer button and said, "What's wrong, honey?"

"A few days ago, Gu Yan's mother asked someone to come looking for him." Lu Yuzhi's voice came from the other end of the phone, tinged with worry.

Li Peiyu was stunned for a moment, and her heart skipped a beat. Gu Yan's mother was Lu Yuzhi's first love.

“His mother wanted him to go to Y country to see her, but Gu Yan couldn’t accept it that day and ran away. He hasn’t come home for several days. I was supposed to talk to him last night, but I was too busy with you. Why don’t you go and try to persuade him?” Lu Yuzhi’s tone was full of expectation.

"Why should I advise him? He's been gone for over a decade and suddenly reappears. Whether Gu Yan acknowledges him or not is his prerogative."

"But she's still my mother. What child doesn't miss their mother? I don't want Gu Yan to make a choice he'll regret later because of a fit of pique."

"Yes, I'll talk to him." Li Peiyu was silent for a moment before finally agreeing. "Will you still be at the old house tonight?"

"Yes, when the old man gets confused, he'll cause trouble if he can't find me."

"Okay, I'll go to the company and come back here tonight."

After seeing Lu Yu off, Li Peiyu was about to go back to find Gu Yan when she saw Gu Yan drive away at high speed.

In that instant, Gu Yan's figure appeared exceptionally lonely and forlorn.

Li Peiyu sighed helplessly and had no choice but to go to the company first, thinking that she would have a proper talk with Gu Yan another day.

Inside the company, Li Peiyu and Sister Fei were having a serious discussion and finalized their list of artists to sign. Just then, Wang Boyang and Gu Yan arrived together.

Li Peiyu looked surprised and said, "Gu Yan?"

Wang Boyang said with a smile, "It's a driver I hired."

"Gu Yan, come with me." Li Peiyu frowned slightly.

Wang Boyang watched as Li Peiyu led Gu Yan into her office, feeling a little strange, though he couldn't quite put his finger on it.

What were they talking about behind his back?

Li Peiyu wanted to talk to Gu Yan about his mother, but didn't know how to bring it up.

She sat at her desk, her brow furrowed, her gaze somewhat unfocused. After a moment of wandering thoughts, she decided to examine herself.

“I have a very good friend. When she was very young, her parents divorced, and neither of them wanted her, leaving her with her grandmother. She hated her parents, but she missed them most of the time. She thought of many reasons why they had no choice but to abandon her, tried to understand them, and even tried to find them, but her parents' indifference completely extinguished that hope. She gave up, accepted the fact that she had been abandoned, and pulled herself together, determined to become an outstanding person and make her parents regret it.” Li Peiyu said slowly, her voice trembling slightly.

"Who is this friend you're talking about?" Gu Yan looked up, his eyes filled with doubt.

"Never mind who it is." Li Peiyu turned her head away, avoiding Gu Yan's gaze.

In reality, it was the same person she had always been. All those past pains and struggles seemed to surge up in her heart again, making Li Peiyu tremble.

“Gu Yan, I understand how you feel. The pain of being abandoned is not easy to let go of. But you will never truly let go unless you talk it out face to face.”
