After graduation, Gu Yan chose to return to Country Y with Gu Hongxi to develop their careers.
A year later, Wang Boyang's younger sister, Tongtong, graduated from high school. Tongtong planned to study in country Y.
Wang Boyang's hometown
As Tongtong packed her luggage methodically, she kept asking, "Brother, have you called Brother Gu Yan yet?"
Wang Boyang was also quickly packing his few belongings; he planned to personally take Tongtong to the college in Country Y. Hearing Tongtong's question, he replied, "I've already called; he'll pick us up at the airport."
Tongtong's face immediately lit up with a bright smile, and she said excitedly, "That's great. I'll go visit Brother Gu Yan often when I'm resting."
Wang Boyang frowned slightly and said seriously, "No, don't disturb his work."
Tongtong was unwilling to give up. She stopped what she was doing and whispered in Wang Boyang's ear, "I won't disturb his work. I'll go see him when he's resting. And I'll report to you if anything happens to him."
Wang Boyang shook his head helplessly and said, "There's no need for that."
Tongtong looked puzzled and asked, "What, can you let it go?"
Wang Boyang's eyes were firm, and he said resolutely, "We must let it go."
Tongtong sighed and said regretfully, "Oh, what a pity. If it weren't for Brother Gu Yan, I would always feel awkward when other people come into our house."
Wang Boyang quickly reminded her, "Keep your voice down, Mom might hear you." As he spoke, he glanced at his mother's bedroom, thankfully the door was closed.
Just as the two finished packing their luggage, the doorbell rang crisply.
Tongtong rushed to open the door and returned shortly after, carrying a package. "Brother, here's your package."
Tongtong handed the package to Wang Boyang.
Wang Boyang was intrigued; he hadn't ordered anything online recently. He took the package, carefully opened it, and found a string of Bodhi seed beads, polished to a deep red color. The sender's address was Li Peiyu.
Not long after, Li Peiyu called. "Yang'er, did you receive the Bodhi seed bracelet?"
Wang Boyang replied, "Received."
Li Peiyu continued, "I saw it yesterday when I was packing. It belonged to Gu Yan. Could you go to Y country and return it to him for me?"
Wang Boyang readily agreed, "Okay."
Wang Boyang stared blankly at the red bracelet in his palm.
The dark red, like a leaping flame, seared his eyes. A wave of indescribable bitterness surged through his heart.
The bracelet had a warm and mellow luster; Gu Yan must have handled it for many years. Perhaps on a leisurely afternoon, or in the quiet of the night, Gu Yan would always hold this bracelet in his hand, gently stroking it. Wang Boyang imagined Gu Yan handling the bracelet—his focused expression, his gentle movements—and the bitterness in his heart grew even stronger.
My heart felt like a volcanic eruption, and my longing, like red lava, roared and surged with overwhelming force, burning wildly along my limbs and bones.
Only after the fire had spread throughout his entire body and bones did everything return to calm.
...
Later, when they arrived in Country Y, Wang Boyang ultimately couldn't bear to return the bracelet to Gu Yan.
He put it in his office drawer.
Whenever he finished his heavy work and had a moment to spare, he would take it out, look at it, and touch it. Feeling the warmth and memories that remained on it, as if he could touch Gu Yan's presence.
They've kept in touch occasionally over the years, but the messages are always the same: Happy New Year, are you busy lately? and so on. Wang Boyang would also frequently browse Gu Yan's WeChat Moments to ease his longing, but Gu Yan rarely posted anything.
One winter, Wang Boyang was looking at documents in his office and felt dizzy, so he took out his bracelet and played with it for a while.
Open your phone and scroll through your WeChat Moments.
A photograph suddenly caught his eye.
A selfie of Gu Yan and a girl in the snow. They are smiling so brightly that happiness seems to overflow the screen.
Wang Boyang sat in his office chair, staring at the photo, clutching his prayer beads tightly in his hand, his heart shattering into pieces. Tears finally streamed down his face.
His delusions should end.
...
Months later, Wang Boyang finally accepted the reality. He thought he should start a new relationship, but he didn't know whether he should look for a boy or a girl.
I was confused and conflicted for several more months.
One day, his younger sister Tongtong called him. "Brother, I have a friend here who wants to work where you are."
Wang Boyang frowned slightly and asked, "Who is it?"
Tongtong quickly replied, "He's a really nice kid. How about you arrange for him to be your assistant or something?"
Wang Boyang remained doubtful and asked, "Where did you graduate from?"
Tongtong paused for a moment, then said, "He didn't go to university, and he's 19."
Upon hearing this, Wang Boyang was somewhat displeased, "Where did you come from? Not just anyone can come here."
Tongtong quickly pleaded, "Brother, give him a trial period. If he's not a good fit, just let him go."
After hearing this, Wang Boyang hesitated.
Tongtong continued to persuade him, "Brother, I've already made arrangements with them. Please give me some face."
Wang Boyang had no choice but to reply, "Okay."
A few days later, the boy Tongtong introduced went to report to Wang Boyang.
Wang Boyang looked up at the boy, and instantly his breath caught in his throat. He immediately understood his sister's intention.
The boy was tall and straight, with a heroic air about him, especially his eyes, which were very similar to Gu Yanchang's.
