Chapter 25 Pain

Gu Yan coaxed Li Peiyu, and after much persuasion, she finally nodded and agreed to go back to sleep.

Gu Yan said embarrassedly, "Dad, I'll take her back to her room."

Lu Yuzhi gave a muffled "hmm," watching Gu Yan carry Li Peiyu on his back. He felt a strange mix of irritability, confusion, and a touch of indescribable melancholy.

Lu Yuzhi didn't want to go home anymore, so he simply booked the room next to Gu Yan's.

Lu Yuzhi sat on the edge of the bed, looking up at the various family planning supplies and fancy toys on the windowsill, which intensified his earlier emotions. He listened intently to the sounds from next door, but his five-star luxury hotel had excellent soundproofing; he couldn't hear anything happening there. The less he could hear, the more restless he became, as if countless ants were gnawing at him, making him uneasy and his thoughts increasingly chaotic.

Lu Yuzhi's mind was filled with images of Li Peiyu's alluring appearance and the enchanting scenes of their time together. She was the only woman in all these years who had ever made him feel both physically and mentally shaken and completely satisfied.

But this extremely comfortable experience will probably disappear with Li Peiyu's departure.

The only woman who moved him was also liked by his son. It was truly tragic, but his life was already a tragedy, so why fear adding insult to injury?

Lu Yuzhi stood up somewhat irritably, walked to the cabinet, and reached in to take out a pack of cigarettes.

The room was dimly lit, with only a yellowish table lamp casting a soft glow, making the whole space feel quiet and oppressive.

Actually, he didn't usually smoke and had no interest in the habit. But at this moment, since he didn't want to relieve his frustration by getting drunk, it seemed that cigarettes could be used as a temporary solution, a way to vent his emotions.

He sat there silently, lit a cigarette, and the swirling smoke rose slowly, mingling with the dim light.

One cigarette after another, Lu Yuzhi mechanically repeated the act of smoking, as if it could temporarily make him forget the troubles in his heart. The occasional sound of cars driving by outside the window made the room seem even quieter, and made his mood even more depressed.

He didn't know how much time had passed, but when he came to his senses, he found that the ground was covered with cigarette butts. The scattered ash and cigarette butts were just like his chaotic mood at that moment.

Next door, Li Peiyu, though drunk, was still instinctively wary of Gu Yan.

She sat on the bed, hugging the blanket, staring intently at Gu Yan, like a small animal looking at its predator. If her opponent dared to attack her, she would fight to the death to survive.

Gu Yan said, "Alright, you're treating me like a thief. I won't touch you, go to sleep."

Only after hearing Gu Yan's assurance did Li Peiyu slowly lie down.

The next day was Thursday, and the Yunnan University basketball tournament was still going on. Although Gu Yan didn't miss a game that day, he still had to go back to school to train and prepare for the finals. So he left earlier than Li Peiyu.

Gu Yan reached out and slowly pushed open the door. Almost at the same moment, Lu Yuzhi next door also opened his door.

Lu Yuzhi's gaze quickly swept over Gu Yan's back, but all he saw was Gu Yan all alone.

"Good morning, Dad," Gu Yan said first.

"Hmm, you played so late yesterday, why didn't you sleep a little longer?" Lu Yuzhi said coldly. He always treated his son this way, never showing any tenderness. In his mind, his son had to be raised roughly. If he was too gentle and tolerant, his son would grow up and become independent, and would rebel against him and challenge his authority as a father.

"Go back to school for training, the basketball finals are tomorrow," Gu Yan replied succinctly.

Did you sleep well?

Lu Yuzhi is suspected of using platitudes.

"It's fine." Gu Yan felt a little uncomfortable; when had his father ever been so caring towards him?

"Dad, are you coming? Together?" Gu Yan asked tentatively.

"No, I'll sleep a little longer." After Lu Yuzhi finished speaking crisply, he slammed the door shut with a loud "bang," which made Gu Yan's body tremble violently.

Gu Yan sighed helplessly to himself; his father's ability to change his attitude was truly astonishing.

Back in his room, Lu Yuzhi pondered Gu Yan's words. He said Gu Yan slept well, but did he actually sleep?

It's really torturous.

Lu Yuzhi waited until 1 p.m. but still didn't hear the door open next door. Lu Yuzhi thought to himself, his son's friend was still sleeping until noon, not eating breakfast or lunch. It shouldn't be unreasonable for him to go and see if something was wrong; it should be normal behavior.

Lu Yuzhi opened the door, looked around and saw that no one was there. Thinking that he had a legitimate reason, he knocked on the door next door.

No one answered.

Lu Yuzhi raised his hand and knocked on the door several times in succession, but there was still no sound or movement from inside.

The unusual silence intensified Lu Yuzhi's bad premonition. His brows furrowed tightly, his face turned grim, and he hurriedly picked up the phone to call the front desk, his voice filled with obvious urgency and unease, "Has room 3014 checked out?"

The receptionist replied gently, "No, Mr. Gu specifically told us before he left that there was a female companion in his room, so he didn't check out."

If that's the case, then Li Peiyu should still be in the room, so why isn't she opening the door? Thinking this, Lu Yuzhi quickly urged the person on the other end of the phone, "Bring the room key, hurry up!"
