Chapter 13 The answer is about to come out

The rain continued to fall for half a day. When night fell, Chi Shu looked up from the page of review materials and caught a glimpse of raindrops hanging on the low guardrail outside the window. They were arranged in an orderly manner, but there was no light and shadow, and the shapes were not very clear.

They had taken quizzes in more than one subject this semester, but none of them was so unforgettable to her.

One of the questions in today's exam is titled -

'If life is titled "regret", what answer would you give?'

She felt that the words were so familiar, yet so strange. The answer seemed to be on the verge of coming out, yet so far away.

It seemed like a topic that would require only a little thought to figure out how to write a story, but because of the rigid pattern of "memorizing", she kept thinking over and over and still couldn't figure out how to start...

Is it a pity? Yes, it is a pity! How can I not feel regret?

The regret and helplessness of knowing the answer but being unable to express it kept haunting her. Those few words and Feng Yichen's complicated look before he said goodbye kept lingering in her mind, unable to be shaken off.

In the last literature elective class of this semester, in order to let students have a relaxing and enjoyable classroom experience, Professor Wen Yanqi made an unprecedented exception and showed everyone a movie, calling it "a reward for everyone's hard work this semester."

This decision indeed made all the students smile, and even made several of his usual right-hand men cheer ecstatically, "Mr. Gaoyi!"

Thus, a movie slowly unfolded in the dimly lit classroom as Professor Wen Yanqi scolded those students in a kind tone, saying, "They just know how to make jokes."

Because he had heard that a movie would be shown in class today, Chi Shu did not choose a desk in the front row, and Feng Yichen naturally chose to sit in the row behind Chi Shu.

The long row of tables and chairs was filled with classmates, both familiar and unfamiliar, all quietly watching the film. Feng Yichen also leaned on the table with one hand, staring straight ahead. However, in his field of vision, besides the changing images, there was also a figure with half-tied hair.

A small velvet hairpin was pinned to her hair, adding a touch of gentleness and playfulness.

Because of the way she sat leaning back in the chair, a strand of her hair hung halfway over the table from the gap in the chair back, right next to his other hand which was placed behind the chair.

Feng Yichen simply stretched out his slender fingers calmly, letting the strand of hair gently cover his fingertips. He then turned his gaze back to the movie screen.

The setting sun's afterglow gently spreads across the mountains and villages, creating a rather misty and romantic atmosphere as seen from afar through the glass windows. Interspersed with the melodious chirping of birds and the constant clatter of passing wheels, it's both the whisper of summer and the clamor of the steel forest...

Time passed slowly in this dim and quiet classroom atmosphere, and the class gradually came to an end with the students' occasional sadness, occasional laughter, and occasional righteous words.

After class, the professor gave some instructions about the exam and then announced the temporary end of the course, and the students dispersed.

Chi Shu and Feng Yichen both had things to complete after class, but there was still some distance before the fork in the road that gave them some more time to talk about their literature homework.

But he absolutely shouldn't have mentioned the movie after the discussion ended, and he certainly shouldn't have asked this question that Chi Shu couldn't properly decide or answer at this moment:

"If it were you, would you believe him? Or, if you were faced with that dilemma, what would you choose? Would you choose to believe the person you like?"

He asked politely, but for Chi Shu, the so-called "person she likes" was only him. This was no different from asking her, "If you were torn between two options, would you trust him or choose him?" So how could she answer this? She felt completely unable to think further, let alone give an answer.

The layers of dark clouds gathered in the sky and refused to disperse for a long time despite the strong winds. It seemed that a heavy rain was coming. This scene was disturbing, but Chi Shu was finally able to focus his thoughts and voice:

"I... am not sure. Maybe I will choose to face it alone."

Feng Yichen seemed to be as calm and composed as ever, but when the two said goodbye, his voice was no longer as relaxed as before.

Thinking about this again, Chi Shuling felt it was hard to let go for a long time. She couldn't help but question her heart:

I can clearly make up my mind quickly about many things, but why do I always make decisions that make me sad and regretful when it comes to this matter concerning him?

Although he asked about "what if," in reality, wasn't he facing a dilemma? Could he really not trust him, could he really not choose him?

These questions to herself made it impossible for her to focus on the densely packed text in front of her. She had no choice but to organize the review materials one by one and put them into her bamboo-patterned handbag, intending to go straight back to the dormitory to rest for a while.

She was filled with such complicated emotions as she slowly walked back to the dormitory. Even after she returned to the dormitory and lay on her comfortable bed, she still couldn't get out of the haze and darkness in her heart.

After the two of them said goodbye, Feng Yichen could only comfort himself:

Perhaps, if you don’t have the opportunity to ask or say some things at the time, they naturally have their reasons and you don’t have to worry about it.

However, there is always a lot of free time during the day to distract yourself, and you can use various reasons to comfort yourself.

But whenever it’s late at night and everyone is asleep, those regretful and difficult-to-let-go emotions will quietly take root and sprout, then invade my heart with unstoppable force and spread rapidly—

It makes people toss and turn...

Teach people to know that what you think about during the day, you will dream about at night...

***

Endless Summer hydrangeas of different colors stretched out their branches and leaves to their heart's content, presenting the most beautiful postures of the flowers. The skylight shone through the layers of dark clouds, casting light and shadows among the clusters of flowers.

Feng Yichen and Chi Shu walked side by side on the stone path in the woods outside the teaching building. When they looked down, they could catch a glimpse of the small carps swimming freely in the peony pond.

After walking across the low wooden bridge and a short distance, the two of them stopped at the fork in the road. The hydrangeas here were in full bloom, and the colorful flowers showed a dazzling charm in the flow of light and shadow.

Chi Shu turned around and was about to say goodbye, but Feng Yichen had already spoken:

"Do you have anything else to do later?"

"No, what's wrong?" Chi Shu responded after thinking about his schedule.

Feng Yichen also smiled gently: "Then let's go for a walk together. The weather is nice today, let's relax a bit."

Chi Shu smiled and replied, "That's fine."

So the two of them walked along the stone path among the blooming hydrangeas, admiring the sky and scenery at that time.

Feng Yichen turned his head to look at the person beside him who was smiling sweetly. He suddenly remembered the plot of the movie and asked tentatively:

"Chi Shu, what do you think of the heroine in the movie just now?"

Chi Shu's question prompted him to reflect earnestly on the heroine's heroic feat in the film. He felt deeply moved at the moment and spoke frankly about his feelings:

"I think her actions towards her people are very brave and inspiring. When it comes to love, she is able to distinguish right from wrong and fight alongside her loved ones. She is so determined to protect the land and the beliefs of her people. It is truly great."

Feng Yichen agreed with her answer, but he was more looking forward to the answer to another question, so he asked:

"What about her love with the male protagonist? What do you think of this ideal of love?"

This time, Chi Shu's answer was not so decisive. She even paused for a moment, thinking back for a long time before slowly saying:

"I envy them and admire their steadfast and beautiful love, but I can't believe such a beautiful and steadfast love will happen to me. I can't believe that there are really infatuated people in this world who can never leave each other and love each other like this."

Feng Yichen, who had been listening calmly, suddenly felt a surge of emotions in his heart after hearing her answer. He stopped and gently grasped Chi Shu's wrist to make her face him, then asked her seriously:

"Chi Shu, I have a question for you, and only you can answer it for me. Please listen to your own heart and answer me seriously, okay?

Seeing his suddenly serious expression, Chi Shu felt a little uneasy, but still nodded seriously.

Feng Yichen then gently grasped her shoulders and moved closer, looking into her eyes and asking seriously:

"Do you like me?" After asking this question, Feng Yichen looked into Chi Shu's eyes more seriously, not daring to miss any reaction.

Hearing this, Chi Shu's heart began beating violently, and she was completely lost. She suddenly didn't dare to look Feng Yichen in the eye, and instinctively wanted to turn sideways to avoid him. However, Feng Yichen's knuckles clasped on her shoulders made it impossible for her to escape. She could only follow her heart and nodded seriously once again.

Seeing her nod so seriously, Feng Yichen was almost overjoyed. In contrast to his previous solemnity, a smile almost instantly jumped onto his cheeks, making him look full of joy.

After a while, he straightened his face and asked again:

"If you were faced with this dilemma, would you choose me and trust me?"

But this time, Chi Shu did not respond for a long time. He just kept his head down and remained silent. After waiting for a long while, he heard her gentle words:

"I... am not sure. Maybe I will choose to face it alone."

Feng Yichen was surprised to hear her answer like this. He was about to move closer to her when he suddenly heard a loud thunder. When he opened his eyes again, he saw the dark night with nothingness.

He woke up from his dream and looked at the ceiling of the dormitory, and then he heard the sound of heavy rain coming from the night. All this inexplicably made him feel a little unreal and at ease in this dark night.

He raised one arm to his forehead, but the sleepiness had disappeared without a trace because of the thunder, so he closed his eyes and recalled the things in his dream.

If possible, he wanted to tell Chi Shu what he was thinking directly no matter what the result was, but he couldn't, because she would be timid and retreat, she would be panic-stricken, and he couldn't bear to ignore her situation.

Everything in the dream was just an illusory shadow like bubbles, but he would take it as a warning and try to understand more about whether Chi Shu also had such concerns.

He would tell Chi Shu that there was someone in the world who was trustworthy, someone who would be truly sincere to her, and then he would hand over all the special rights related to it to her.
