Chapter 18 Art Festival Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition

“When it rains continuously, you don’t realize that spring is gone; when it clears up, you realize how deep summer is.”

In this season, the Calligraphy and Painting Biennale, jointly guided by the school's Party Committee Propaganda Department and the Trade Union and hosted by the Calligraphy, Painting and Seal Carving Research Institute, has officially opened in the school art gallery. The exhibition is also open to people outside the school, allowing everyone to enjoy the exhibition while also purchasing their favorite cultural and creative works.

So now the entire art museum is full of people who have made reservations to enter, and every exhibition area is packed with people.

In addition to occupying a place in the calligraphy exhibition area, the artistic creations of Chi Shu and Mo Nican are also exhibited in the painting exhibition area.

After the two of them came to visit early, they made an appointment to come again on the last day of the exhibition.

Feng Yichen, who was visiting the painting area with Xu Tongshang at the time, walked slowly and quietly through the first-prize Chinese painting exhibition area. Before long, a large freehand painting, "People in the Snow," caught his eye.

There is an icy silence on the rice paper, and only two colors of light and dark are splashed between heaven and earth.

In the foreground, a few dry brushstrokes slant across the eaves and pillars of the pavilion in the center of the lake. Unadorned, yet its corners stand alone, facing the cold sky. The lake beside the pavilion is unrippled, a vast expanse of white smudged with light ink. The distant shoreline is veiled in a faint mist, while a few withered trees, dotted with burnt ink, feature branches, their tips seemingly skewing unmelted snowflakes, sparsely reflected against the hazy sky.

However, in this shifting flow of light and dark, a black figure became the only spot in the cold and silent world. It seemed as if it was watching the snow, or as if it was blending into the boundless silence with the snow, the pavilion, and the frozen lake.

This work suddenly reminded Feng Yichen of some scenes in the snow during his previous field trip, and he felt quite touched.

But after seeing that this work was created by Chi Shu, he contacted the museum staff almost without hesitation and went through the transaction procedures directly.

While Feng Yichen was feeling restless after this discovery, Xu Tongshang also saw a meticulous painting titled "Jasmine" on the other side of the exhibition area.

The jasmine blossoms at the center of the painting are arranged in a Chinese character "品" (a character for "品"), forming the visual centerpiece. The blossoming flower takes center stage, its petals distinctly layered and delicately textured, its edges outlined with a fine, hair-thin, yet powerful, "gossamer" technique. The bud immediately to the left is half-open, lightly brushed with ink to create a three-dimensional, enveloping effect. The newly blossomed flower on the right juts out diagonally, leaving blank space at the curl.

The lines of the branches and leaves, drawn with the technique of "iron wire drawing," are steady and textured; the tiny moss dots in the corners, dotted with light ink, balance the composition and make the whole painting appear more elegant and beautiful...

It seems as if one can smell the delicate fragrance of jasmine in the painting between the form and spirit.

He also noticed the author's signature "Jasmine" in the upper right corner of the painting, which he inexplicably found interesting. That's why he paid close attention to the author's logo on the label attached to the painting. In addition to information such as his student ID number, it also read "Mo Ni Can". The elegant and graceful handwriting was different from the font style of the signature in this painting.

He wanted to buy the painting, but he felt that he really didn't have much artistic talent and was afraid of wasting it, so he stopped to admire it for a long time before moving on to another area.

But when he still couldn't forget the painting after a long time and finally decided to buy it for his collection, the painting had already been bought by someone else.

He came here with Feng Yichen today just to show off his knowledge. However, when he saw the "Sold" sign next to the original painting, he felt a sense of loss for some unknown reason.
