Chapter 12: Twelfth Day of Raising a Cub

"Wei Xu, damn, your hat is so funny!" Du Shao laughed loudly, as if he had seen something extremely wonderful. He pointed at his hat and said, "How magical! They are rabbit ears. Are you a little rabbit?"

Wei Xu glanced at him indifferently, sat down in his seat calmly, and took out his books and new pencil case from the brand new Doraemon schoolbag.

"I think it's very cute." Du Shao's deskmate is a girl who stared at the bunny ears on the hat. "It's purple, too."

"Little white rabbit, so white, with two ears standing up!" Du Shao sang the nursery rhyme happily.

Wei Xu felt his hat being pulled, and couldn't help frowning. He turned his head to look at Du Shao: "What's the matter?"

Seeing that he looked unhappy, Du Shao immediately loosened his hand and said timidly, "It's okay."

"Don't pull my hat."

After saying these cold words, Wei Xu turned his head away.

Du Shao was stunned for a moment, then sighed, "Oh my god."

He heard this catchphrase from his sister, and he has been saying it a lot recently.

"Fuck, you're not going to be angry, are you?"

Although Du Shao is naughty, she still cares about Wei Xu's feelings in her heart.

Although the other party has always been quiet and doesn't like to talk to him much, he still always regards Wei Xu as his best friend in the class.

Seeing that Wei Xu ignored her, Du Shao stood up and went to his table.

He was about to admit his mistake to his good friend, but when he went over, before he could even say his apology, he was attracted by the dazzling array of new stationery on his desk.

"Did you buy a new schoolbag?" Du Shao said this, but his eyes fell directly on the pencil case.

Wei Xu responded indifferently and continued to take out the colored pencils and hand-cranked pencil sharpener his brother bought for him from his schoolbag.

"Wow...you bought a lot of new things." The little fat man looked surprised.

"My brother bought it for me."

"Is it the brother who came to pick you up from school these two days?"

"Um."

"Your brother is so generous." Du Shao's tone was full of envy. "I saw this pencil case in a stationery store. It cost fifteen yuan. My dad didn't even buy it for me. Your brother is so good to you."

Wei Xu tried his best to suppress the corners of his mouth that wanted to turn up, and pretended not to care as he stuffed his schoolbag into the drawer.

"Can I open it and take a look?"

"Look."

Du Shao obviously liked this pencil case very much. After getting it in his hands, he fiddled with it for a long time, talking to himself, and was reluctant to put it down. He pulled out a secret compartment from the left, and then pressed a switch to pop out the layers. He flipped through it back and forth, and couldn't let it go.

Wei Xu also likes this pencil case, but his favorite is the pencil sharpener because there is a small dinosaur pattern on the side of it.

The little dinosaur also has a green coat with yellow spikes, just like his little dinosaur pajamas. There is reason to believe that Wei You decided to buy this pencil sharpener because he thought of himself when he saw the dinosaur pattern.

"Hey, there's a secret compartment underneath!" Du Shao pressed something and the switch at the bottom of the pencil case popped open. The eraser that Wei Xu had put in there last night fell on the table, bounced twice and then fell to the ground.

"Oh, sorry!" Du Shao apologized quickly.

Wei Xu picked up the eraser. Seeing that the other party was not showing any signs of restraint in his attack, he was really worried that he would break the pencil case his brother gave him.

After holding back for a few seconds, he couldn't help but speak: "Have you had enough fun? It's time to start reading early."

Du Shao glanced at him and reluctantly put down her pencil case.

Before returning to her seat, she glanced at the neatly arranged colored pencils on the table and sighed again, "You are so nice, brother. My sister, don't even mention buying me anything. It's good enough that she doesn't beat me."

How can that be compared?

Wei Xu put away the pencil case and thought with some pride that his brother was the best brother in the world.

·

The early autumn rain lasted for several days. For a week, Wei You took his son Guazai to and from school with an umbrella. It was not until Friday afternoon when the weather cleared up that he finally put down the umbrella.

He was not idle this week. After the supermarket stopped its promotions, he found a temporary job as a cashier in a bookstore.

A regular employee took a leave due to illness, so Wei You went to work for him for four days. The part-time hours were from 8 am to 2 pm, and the salary was 6 yuan per hour. The salary could be paid daily or recorded in the account and settled together at the end.

Although the salary was a bit low, Wei You thought that he was free anyway, and the working hours in the bookstore were suitable, and the salary was paid daily. He could kill time and earn some money for groceries at the same time, so why not?

In this way, Wei You worked in the bookstore for four days, and the money in his wallet increased instead of decreased. When he felt that he was almost ready to go back, he still had 140 yuan left.

Since he had some money left over, Wei You decided to be generous and take Guazai out for a special meal before going back.

The reason he had this idea was that he found that every time he picked up Wei Xu from school, when they passed by a casual restaurant called "Happy Windmill", the child would turn his head to look at the glass door of the store, with longing in his eyes.

But whenever Wei You asked him if he wanted to go in for dinner, he would shake his head seriously and pretend that he was not interested at all.

Wei You naturally would not take his refusal seriously. He guessed that Guazai was unwilling to go in just to save money for himself.

His wallet was tight before, and he really didn't have the spare money to eat this kind of expensive and unnutritious food. Now that he has some extra money, he can take his children to try something new.

That afternoon, Wei You picked up Wei Xu from school as usual. When the "Happy Windmill" store was right in front of him, he deliberately observed Guazai's actions.

Perhaps because Wei You had asked him the same question so many times, this time Guazi intentionally controlled himself from turning around to look. However, when he passed by the window displaying the colorful cakes, he still couldn't help but take a look.

Wei You was touched by his cute little eyes, a smile appeared on his lips, and he suddenly pressed Guazai's shoulder to ask him to stop.

Wei Xu raised his head and looked at him with puzzled eyes.

Wei You bent down and took his hand, walked towards the store door, and explained: "Brother doesn't want to cook today, let's eat here."

Wei Xu blinked and stopped.

Wei You stepped onto the steps and just as he pushed open the door and prepared to go in, he suddenly felt that the figure behind him had stopped moving, so he looked down and asked, "What's wrong?"

Wei Xu looked at him with clear eyes, then shook his head as if nothing had happened, and raised his legs to follow his pace.

Wei You observed his expression and made sure that the child was not unhappy, then he walked in with peace of mind.

There were a lot of young people in the store, especially students from a nearby high school. Men and women gathered together, laughing and making a lot of noise.

Seeing that Guazai looked a little reserved, Wei You took him to choose a sofa booth in the corner of the second floor.

Not long after they sat down, a waiter came over and put a menu on their table.

Wei You put the menu in front of Wei Xu: "Take a look, what do you want to eat?"

Wei Xu glanced at the menu, then looked at Wei You, with a look of helplessness in his eyes.

Wei You sat next to him and helped him order.

In this day and age, this kind of restaurant that mainly serves Western fast food is still relatively rare, and there is only one in the entire Xiangfang town. Therefore, while this restaurant has good business, the food it sells is also very expensive.

Wei You ordered some French fries, fried chicken wings and hamburgers that kids liked for him, and ordered a clay pot rice with bacon for himself. Then, seeing that Wei Xu's eyes were still lingering on the milk tea, he ordered a cup of strawberry pearl milk tea for him.

Just these few things cost more than 60 yuan. It might not be a big deal in the future, but it is really expensive in this era. It is equivalent to Wei You’s two-day salary as a part-time worker in a bookstore.

Soon the dishes were served on the table, carrying the unique aroma of fried food.

Wei You tasted the fries and his own clay pot rice, both of which tasted OK. He looked up and saw Guazi slurping milk tea through a straw, so he asked, "Is it good?"

Wei Xu nodded and pushed the cup in front of him.

Wei You lowered his head and took a sip, and suddenly smelled a greasy sweet strawberry aroma. He couldn't help but wrinkled his nose and pushed the milk tea back to Wei Xu.

"Is it not tasty?" Wei Xu seemed a little confused. He put the straw into his mouth and took a big sip of milk tea. It tasted sweet and fragrant, and there was nothing wrong with it.

In fact, he couldn't tell what it tasted like, right? Although he had heard Du Shao say many times how delicious pearl milk tea was, this was the first time he had tasted the real thing.

Wei You put on a smile and said, "Not bad, but adults are not suitable for drinking such sweet things. Only sweet and cute children like Guazai can drink it."

Being praised for being cute again, Wei Xu's heart started beating wildly and his ears started burning for some reason.

He lowered his head, bit the straw, sucked out two tiny pearls, and chewed them hard, as if this would make him no longer shy.

Seeing that he liked milk tea so much, Wei You thought that he could bring back two cups of milk tea for Guazi this time.

Thinking about going back, Wei You took out his mobile phone from his pocket and took a look. After a week of use, the battery of the mobile phone was at the end of its battery life and it looked like it could run out of power and shut down at any time.

In order to avoid the accident of leaving without saying a word like last time, Wei You put down his chopsticks after finishing his meal and said seriously: "Idiot, I have something to tell you."

Wei Xu raised his head and looked at him in confusion.

Although Wei You hadn't said anything yet, the moment he saw the other person's eyes, he felt a bad premonition in his heart.

Wei You pondered for a moment, then said bluntly: "I might go back today."

The boy stopped chewing the hamburger suddenly, and his pupils staring at him trembled slightly. The slightly yellow light scattered from the top of his head, casting a faint shadow under his eyes.

After a moment's silence, he asked, "Can we not leave?"

Wei You shook his head.

"Then, can that kid go back with you?" he asked with a pleading tone.

"I would like to take you back, but..."

Almost instantly, Wei You saw mist in the other person's pair of dark and clear eyes.
