They both looked like educated youth who had gone to the countryside. They were carrying thick canvas bags stuffed bulging with stuff and bedding rolls on their shoulders. They were staggering as they walked, and beads of sweat were on their foreheads.
Lin Jianxue recognized the noisy woman at a glance.
Liu Liwen.
She was my high school classmate.
Strictly speaking, before Fu Zhewei became her deskmate, she and Liu Liwen were deskmates for a period of time.
Liu Liwen looks very enthusiastic on the surface, but in fact she is not very clean and is particularly fond of taking advantage of small things.
When they were desk mates, Lin Jianxue would often find something missing from her desk, sometimes an eraser, sometimes a few sheets of letter paper.
The most outrageous time was when Lin Yuefeng asked someone to bring her a new model of Hero brand gold pen from Shanghai. The pen barrel was a dark green color which was very rare at the time and it was very beautiful.
She treasured it so much that she took it to school and used it for a few days. When she went to the bathroom during break, the pen disappeared when she came back.
She was so anxious that she almost cried. She searched her schoolbag and drawers but couldn't find it.
The next day, Liu Liwen took out an identical dark green Hero fountain pen and showed it off in front of her classmates. She also explained "generously" that it was a birthday present bought for her by her aunt who worked at the Supply and Marketing Department.
Lin Jianxue was so angry that she was shaking all over. She was almost certain that it was Liu Liwen who stole her pen.
But the pen didn't have a name engraved on it, so she had no evidence. Liu Liwen insisted that it was her aunt who sent it, and she acted aggrieved, as if Lin Jianxue had wronged her.
In the end, the matter was left unresolved.
From then on, Lin Jianxue kept her distance from Liu Liwen and strongly requested the class teacher to change her seat.
It was also during that seat change that the teacher moved Fu Zhawei to sit at the same table with her.
Unlike the indifference that flashed across Lin Jianxue's eyes, Liu Liwen's mood at this moment could be described as joyful.
Her pair of rolling eyes looked up and down at Lin Jianxue without any concealment, from the crisp sea-blue jacket she was wearing, to the brand new black leather shoes on her feet, to the two bulging suitcases stuffed under the bed - it was obvious that the suitcases were not something an ordinary family could afford, and the corners were inlaid with metal bars, making them sturdy and imposing.
Lin Jianxue's family background was well-known throughout her high school. Her father was the director of the Red Star Steel Plant, and her mother was the head teacher at a key high school. This was a family of genuine leaders, and their financial situation was infinitely superior to that of her father, who was just an ordinary clerk.
If I could get along with a "high-ranking official's child" like Lin Jianxue on this trip to the countryside, wouldn't I have to worry about food and drink? I might even get some good things from her! Maybe I could even "borrow" some good things from her from time to time, just like I did in high school.
As soon as this thought came to her mind, the smile on Liu Liwen's face became more and more eager, and she became so affectionate that she almost wanted to stick to him.
She didn't even ask Lin Jianxue if she minded, and she simply pulled Zhang Ruichen beside her and sat down on the empty seat opposite Lin Jianxue.
"Oh, squad leader, look at our luck! What a coincidence!"
Liu Liwen put the rolled-up blanket on her shoulder aside and swiftly tucked the canvas bag under the seat. Then she turned around and pointed at the man beside her, introducing him to Lin Jianxue. "This is my boyfriend, Zhang Ruichen. We both went to Hulan County, Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province, to join the production team and settle down! I didn't expect to run into you here!"
Zhang Ruichen adjusted the black-framed glasses on his nose, and looked at Lin Jianxue with a scrutinizing look behind the lenses. He nodded in agreement with a slightly shy smile.
He was wearing a half-worn blue work suit, the cuffs of which were a little frayed, but they were still starched and clean, and he looked indeed gentlemanly.
Don't hit someone who smiles at you.
What's more, there was a strange man standing next to her, and Lin Jianxue didn't want to cause any unpleasantness as soon as she got on the train.
She forced herself to suppress the slight annoyance that rose in her heart due to the other party's overly familiar manner, nodded gently, and said in a calm voice, "Hello."
Liu Liwen seemed completely oblivious to this indifference. She eagerly pressed on, "Squad Leader, judging from the direction you're heading, you're also heading to Heilongjiang Province, right? Are you also going to Hulan County to join the team?"
