The young man walking on the ridge of the field heard the sound, paused, raised his head, and cast a clear and cool gaze at the girl in the cotton field.
"What?"
He paused, his eyes resting briefly on her face.
Lin Jianxue looked a little embarrassed at the moment.
His neatly combed hair was soaked with sweat, with a few strands of hair sticking messily to his cheeks and forehead. His fair little face was covered with dust and dirt, and only his eyes, against the backdrop of his dusty face, looked particularly bright.
Lin Jianxue raised her head and met his deep, dark eyes. She quickly scanned his face and asked directly, "Are you off work?"
Fu Zhewei nodded silently as a response.
Lin Jianxue blinked and said, "Fu Zhewei, look at this patch of land... I'm sure I'll never be able to finish it. If I don't complete the mission, Captain Liang will definitely scold me."
"We're at the same table after all, so could you...help me pick it up for a while? I'll owe you a favor and treat you to a nice meal someday, how about that?"
Fu Zhawei's gaze moved slowly from her pitiful little face to her miserable piece of responsibility land, and then swept over her hands that were covered in mud and had red knuckles.
He could see that she was not just pretending, but was really trying her best.
On the first day of farm work, I didn't slack off and pulled the weeds quite carefully. However, I didn't know the key points and I was exhausted, so I dropped so much.
He did not answer immediately. His deep eyes were calm and it was impossible to guess what he was thinking.
Just when Lin Jianxue thought he was going to refuse, Fu Zhawei finally moved.
Without saying anything extra, he simply stuck the hoe on his shoulder into the ground, then, with a step of his long legs, he jumped off the ridge of the field neatly and landed steadily in the cotton field.
"Is this area all yours?" He asked in a low voice, asking if this was the area she was responsible for.
"Yeah!" Lin Jianxue nodded quickly, like a chick pecking at rice.
Fu Zhewei stopped talking, bent down, and then began to pull out weeds in silence.
His movements were astonishingly fast, his fingers nimble and powerful. He barely needed to discern the weeds, accurately grasping them by the root and pulling them out with a single tug, soil and all, before casually tossing them aside. His movements were quick and decisive, his efficiency several times greater than Lin Jianxue's.
But in just a few minutes, the weeds in the area under his control were cleared away, revealing the neatly planted green cotton seedlings underneath.
Lin Jianxue stood aside, watching his skillful and efficient movements, and was stunned for a moment.
Back then, Fu Zhawei, like her, was a young master who had never touched a finger in the water and was meticulously cared for. But now, he could do these rough jobs with such ease and naturalness.
How much suffering and pain did you endure during this process?
An indescribable feeling of bitterness quietly surged into Lin Jianxue's heart.
Fu Zhawei's movements were very smooth and precise.
But in just a quarter of an hour, he had cleared the weeds cleanly.
Terribly efficient.
He stood up straight and casually patted the dirt on his trouser legs.
Turning his head, those dark eyes looked at Lin Jianxue.
"The weeds are done."
His voice was low.
"You go back."
After he finished speaking, without waiting for Lin Jianxue's reaction, he bent down to pick up the hoe stuck in the ground, nimbly put it on his shoulder, stretched out his long legs, and walked straight to the outside of the field.
"Hey, Fu Zhewei!"
Lin Jianxue looked at his back, feeling anxious, and quickly called out to him.
She didn't care about her sore waist and weak legs, and trotted after him, blocking him in a few steps.
"Why are you walking so fast?"
She panted slightly and looked up at him.
Fu Zhawei was tall and standing against the light, so the expression on his face was a little blurry, but the sense of alienation emanating from his body was clearly discernible.
Lin Jianxue suppressed the inexplicable awkwardness in her heart and tried to make her tone sound more natural: "Well... we are classmates, it's rare for us to meet here. I also want to... ask you for a favor."
Fearing he would refuse immediately, she quickly added, "I'll pay you. Money, or food coupons, either is fine."
Fu Zhewei stopped and looked down at Lin Jianxue who was standing in front of him.
The afterglow of the setting sun outlined her sweaty profile, and a few strands of hair stuck to her cheeks, making her already small face look even more pitiful. Her clear eyes were now shining, with a light that was almost pleading.
Fu Zhewei's Adam's apple rolled very slightly.
Then, he looked away as if nothing had happened. His voice was still cold, but with a subtle stiffness:
"What's the matter?"
After a pause, he added, "It's very hard."
“No reward required.”
