Chapter 49 Are you a dog?

That night, the moon was bright and the stars were few.

On the western side of Qiyun Mountain, Pei Xi secretly crouched in the dense forest.

The autumn rain had just stopped, and the weather was chilly. He wrapped his fox fur cloak tighter around himself and couldn't help but sneeze.

Pei Xi felt like he was an idiot.

They actually believed Jiang Wan's lies and came here to lie in wait for Song Tingyue.

He had been waiting there for half an hour, but there was still no movement on the path.

"I knew it! Sister Anyang promised me she'd keep it a secret, how could she possibly come here?"

Pei Xi snorted coldly, but felt much lighter in his heart. He got up and prepared to leave.

I had only taken two steps when I suddenly heard footsteps behind me.

Pei Xi immediately hid behind a tree and looked towards the mountain path.

The moonlight poured down, lengthening the two shadows on the mountain path.

“That bitch Jiang Wan is too cunning. You must be ruthless when you strike, kill her with one sword, and leave her no way out.”

A soft, feminine voice—a voice Pei Xi knew all too well.

However, the malice in the words was completely unfamiliar to him.

Pei Xi covered her mouth tightly.

"She escaped a disaster last night; she's lucky to be alive."

The man dressed in black turned around, his face covered by a mask, his voice sinister.

"Don't worry, I'll do it myself. I'll make sure she's thoroughly dead."

A night breeze swept by, lifting a corner of his mask.

Pei Xi stared at his profile, then suddenly widened her eyes.

The two whispered a few more words to each other, then stood on one side of the mountain path, silently waiting for Jiang Wan to arrive.

Unbeknownst to them, Jiang Wan had already arrived.

"It seems my mission is accomplished."

Two figures were quietly lying in ambush in the sycamore tree not far from Pei Xi.

It was Jiang Wan and Pei Xuan.

"The person has arrived. What does Your Highness intend to do?"

“I don’t want to alert them,” Pei Xuan said simply. “But that person’s face was covered by a black veil, so I can’t tell who they are.”

Jiang Wan was slightly surprised: "So, Your Highness wants to use me as bait to make him reveal his identity?"

The man in black was clearly a skilled fighter, and Pei Xuan had no guards with him. If a fight really broke out…

"What, are you afraid I can't protect you?"

Pei Xuan's eyes were sharp, and he instantly understood what she was thinking. He chuckled.

"If you want my protection, you should give something in return. That's what a transaction is, isn't it?"

Feeling the pressure on her shoulders, Jiang Wan's expression went blank for a moment.

"Your Highness...you don't mean to throw me down, do you?"

This sycamore tree is very tall; if she falls from it, she will definitely be crippled.

Her eyelashes trembled slightly, but she pretended to be calm and secretly hugged the tree trunk tightly with both hands.

Pei Xuan had always seen her as shrewd, capable, and charming.

Seeing her in such a predicament, I found it quite strange.

"I hadn't thought of that before, but now that you mention it, I think it's a good idea."

He grabbed Jiang Wan by the collar, and with a slight effort, he pulled her away from the tree trunk.

Jiang Wan took a deep breath.

That bastard Pei Xuan actually dared to use such a ruthless method!

She was extremely anxious and struggled to break free. She turned her head and bit his arm, then quickly moved to the other side and hugged the tree branch tightly.

Pei Xuan hissed, his face darkening considerably.

"Jiang Wan, were you born in the Year of the Dog?"

The two stared at each other, neither willing to give in, when suddenly several torches lit up at the end of the mountain path.

A squad of soldiers ran over and immediately spotted Song Tingyue and the man, shouting, "Who's there?"

By the light of the burning fire, it can be seen that the people are wearing the uniforms of the Song family army.

Jiang Wan looked closely and indeed saw Er Gou among the first group of people.

A thought flashed through her mind, and she knew something was wrong.

"Take me down here quickly!" she said to Pei Xuan.

Song Tingyue never expected that before Jiang Wan arrived, her whereabouts would be discovered first.

She reacted extremely quickly.

Seeing that the soldiers were about to reach him and he couldn't escape, he gave the man in black a wink.

The man in black lightly touched the ground with his toes, attempting to escape using his light-footed skills.

Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through my shoulder.

"There's a hidden weapon!"

He hissed angrily in a low voice, his gaze sweeping across the dark surroundings, then gritted his teeth, clutched his shoulder, and disappeared into the forest.

Pei Xuanyin quietly withdrew his hand in the darkness.

Just as I came to my senses, I saw Jiang Wan run to the side of the mountain road and drag a passing soldier into the bushes.

It was Er Gou.

Er Gou was startled and was about to draw his sword when he saw Jiang Wan and exclaimed with delight, "Madam Jiang!"

"Shh," Jiang Wan asked him, "What are you doing here?"

Er Gou replied, "After last night, our captain felt that Princess Anyang was suspicious and might be planning something harmful, so he secretly kept an eye on her. Just now, the captain spotted her sneaking out of the tent, and we followed her, and sure enough..."

Jiang Wan's eyes dimmed.

The one who just questioned Song Tingyue with a torch should be the captain Er Gou mentioned.

They simply lacked evidence and couldn't do anything to Song Tingyue.

As expected, Song Tingyue only said that she had insomnia and came here to relax. As for the dark figure, she didn't mention it at all and dismissed the soldiers with a few words.

Before leaving, I asked the captain's name.

Jiang Wan turned to look at Er Gou, her expression quite complicated.

"Remember, you didn't see Song Tingyue tonight. If the general asks about it later, just say you were stationed at the camp and knew nothing."

Er Gou was dumbfounded: "Why? I clearly saw a man behind her! She was having a secret rendezvous with someone in the middle of the night, there's definitely something wrong with that!"

"I must inform the general and warn him to be careful of Donglai..."

"She is saving you."

Pei Xuan glanced at him coldly, his words utterly merciless.
