Chapter 181 Crossing the Abyss of Calamity
The sandstorm raged for a while before gradually stopping. As soon as the wind died down, Ji Rong and Shan Wu shook themselves to shake off the sand.
Then, they continued on their way in the direction marked on the map, but after less than half a day, the sandstorm began to rage again.
Shan Wu was impatient to be buried in the soil again, and he didn't want to waste his spiritual energy maintaining the protective barrier any longer. He angrily said to Ji Rong, "Nephew, let your uncle dig a hole and we'll take shelter here."
Ji Rong probed the loose soil with his paws and said, "Uncle, this place is probably not good for digging. Let me take you to avoid it for a while."
Shan Wu laughed and said, "No need to waste spiritual energy, watch me."
Shan Wu leaned forward and raised his claws to dig, but as soon as he moved his claws, the soft soil beneath them crumbled into pieces as if it had been severely injured. The fine dust on top was blown up by the wind and filled Shan Wu's mouth.
Ji Rong looked at Shan Wu's yellowish face and found it quite adorable. She only managed to say half a sentence, "Uncle, your face..." before raising her neck and laughing loudly at the sky.
When Shan Wu heard Ji Rong laughing at him, he felt blood rush to his head and was filled with rage.
He flicked his tail, stood up, gently grabbed Ji Rong's neck with one paw, pressed down on Ji Rong's head with the other, and gently stuck it into the sand pile, saying, "Nephew, you actually made fun of me, then you can stay in the ground for a while too."
Then, Shan Wu quickly made a hand seal, creating a small protective shield that barely protected himself, leaving Ji Rong buried in the sand outside.
Ji Rong pulled her head out of the sand, stared at Shan Wu huddled inside the protective shield, and chuckled. Then she took the cage down.
Ji Rong raised her wings and claws, made a hand seal, and softly chanted a spell. The cage grew larger as she chanted the spell. Then she opened the cage door, went inside, and went to keep Bao Shan company.
The sandstorm grew stronger and stronger, soon covering the cage and turning the outside of the cage into a yellow color, blending in with the sky and earth.
Shan Wu stayed inside the protective shield. He only heard Ji Rong laugh twice before falling silent. His heart tightened, and he quickly put away the protective shield to look for Ji Rong.
But with yellow sand everywhere, where could he find it? After a lot of busywork, Shanwu once again successfully transformed himself into a big, yellowish-brown cat that kept sneezing.
Just as Shan Wubian was digging sand and pacing anxiously, he suddenly heard Ji Rong's voice coming from the south on the wind: "Haha, Uncle, I'm here. Come quickly and get the cage, lest we be picked up by someone else."
Upon hearing this sound, Shan Wu shook his head, squinted, and looked around. After a while, he saw a very round spot to the south. He slowly walked forward, raised his right paw, and pointed at the spot. A layer of sand fell off, revealing the cage inside.
"Found it!" Shan Wu thought happily to himself, and then he immediately grabbed the cage with his claws and shook it, startling Ji Rong inside who cried out, "Uncle, Uncle, stop shaking it!"
Upon hearing Ji Rong's call, Shan Wu roared with joy. Then, he erected a protective shield to cover himself and the cage, and pretended to sleep amidst the swirling yellow sand.
Once the sandstorm subsided, Shan Wucai put away the protective shield, then shook the cage and said, "Nephew, come out. The sandstorm has stopped."
As soon as Ji Rong came out, he saw that Shan Wushen looked somewhat listless, but the two of them did not dare to delay. They ate some spiritual food and then sped off towards the Crossing Calamity Abyss.
After traveling for five days, Shan Wu finally brought Ji Rong to the Abyss of Crossing Calamity.
Ironically, the reason they knew they had come to the right place amidst the vast expanse of yellow sand was because there were three huge rocks piled up on the sand, with large inscriptions written on them in the common language of the demon race: Abyss of Extreme Evil.
The entrance to the Abyss of Calamity is a pitch-black giant hole, its surroundings completely covered by fresh yellow sand, revealing no trace of the past.
Ji Rong stood outside the huge cave and looked inside for a while, discovering that the cave was incredibly deep and she couldn't see the bottom.
So she released Baoshan and said, "We've arrived. Can you sense it?"
Baoshan approached the cave entrance and stayed there for a while, then walked back disappointedly, shaking his head at Ji Rong and saying, "No."
Ji Rong thought for a moment, then said to Shan Wudao, "Uncle, since we're here, let's go into this cave and explore it."
Shan Wuye stepped forward and looked him over, then knelt down and said, "Nephew, I'll carry you down." Ji Rong nodded and, with Baoshan Qi, sat on Shan Wuye's back.
They walked through this enormous black hole, going lower and lower, getting darker and darker, with more and more bends along the way.
Ji Rong asked Bao Shan, "Do you know how this place came to be?"
Baoshan, however, said, "Liangzhou is windy and sandy; this place must have been dug up."
They walked twenty miles into the cave and began to see scattered bones; the further they went in, the more bones they found.
After traveling about fifty miles, a light suddenly appeared ahead. Shan Wu slowly and silently walked towards the light, and then they came to a flat area.
Shan Wu emerged from the dark hole, looked around, and then released his imperial aura to survey the surroundings. He then said to Ji Rong on his back, "Nephew, come down. There are no beasts here."
Ji Rong carried Bao Shan down from Shan Wu's back. It was a sunny day with a clear sky, no wind, and perfect sunshine. The air was filled with a barren spiritual energy, and the ground was covered with exposed rocks and some turned grass.
But this place also contains piles of all sorts of bones, these bones mixed with bits of flesh and blood, their heads having sat in the mud for years, emitting a foul stench.
There was a thick layer of foul-smelling black mud on the ground. Ji Rong took two steps, then pulled one foot back and said, "Uncle, carry me on your back."
Shan Wu also disliked walking in this filthy black mud. He glanced back at Ji Rong and said helplessly, "This ground is hard to carry. If you sink in, it will be difficult to get out."
Ji Rong stood on one leg, stretched out a wing and gently patted it on her back, then raised her neck proudly and said to Shan Wudao, "How can this stinking land be worthy of letting me leave? What will happen if I become stinky?"
Shan Wu immediately understood. He walked to Ji Rong's side, knelt down, and let Ji Rong and Bao Shan climb onto his back.
They walked further in, and after walking for a long time, they didn't see a single beast, not even a common rat.
“This is truly a deathly abyss!” Ji Rong couldn’t help but sigh to Shan Wu. “Uncle, this place is like it’s been poisoned and everyone is dead. It’s just too clean.”
They continued walking in, for nearly ten miles, until they finally reached a place where there were no bones. Ji Rong said to Shan Wudao, "Uncle, let's eat something here."
There is nothing they cannot do in the mountains. Then they stopped. Ji Rong took out spiritual food from her storage ring and placed it on the stone. The bird and the tiger then surrounded the stone and began to eat and drink.
The sounds of eating and drinking made the black bear hiding in the shadows drool. The black and white bear behind him pressed its paw against his forehead, making him afraid to swallow, and letting the drool drip from his open mouth onto the stone.
