Grandma An smiled and said, "Oh my, you really look like a bride."
"Grandma, isn't it beautiful?"
"Beautiful! Little girl has grown up. Now you're a grown-up. Children grow up so fast. It seems like only yesterday you were playing in the mud and catching earthworms."
An Youhe smiled and said, "Yes, it really is fast."
Back then, Grandpa was still alive, and she was carefree every day. Grandpa liked to fish, and An Youhe would catch earthworms with a group of children every day. No matter how big or small the fish they caught were, Grandma would cook them into fish soup. Grandpa would not eat any of the meat, only drink the fish soup, and give the rest of the fish meat to An Youhe.
But that was a very, very long time ago.
"I have no regrets if I can see you get married. However, I also want to see you live a happy life. I really don't know if it was right or wrong to entrust you to this child."
Grandma An said, glancing at Ye Zhou.
Ye Zhou firmly grasped An Youhe's hand.
"Grandma, you don't need to worry about that."
An Youhe, dressed in a white wedding dress, pouted and said, "Grandma, how can you say that? You must be there when I get married."
The old lady chuckled twice, then shook her head. "I can't see it. I know my own body."
...
The following week, An Youhe's uncle also came from out of town. An Youhe did not go home and stayed at the hospital to take care of him.
Ye Zhou sometimes brought them meals and stayed there quietly.
While An Youhe was out, Grandma An asked Ye Zhou, "Young man, after how I treated you before, do you think I'm a bad person?"
Ye Zhou laughed, "I didn't take it to heart. We're different in age and seniority, so it's only right that I give way to you a little."
The phone rang, and Ye Zhou went out to answer it. The medical team had arrived and should all be here in about half a day.
"Thank you, boss, for your help."
"Don't be so polite. We're all members of the Forty Thieves, we're all family. These teams are all top experts from the US. It's just that the medical conditions in the hospitals here might not be good. I think it would be better to send the old lady to a big hospital and see what the medical team recommends then."
In the past few days, the old lady's condition has deteriorated rapidly. She can't eat much, and she spends almost every day either receiving intravenous fluids or sleeping. She doesn't have much time to be awake, and her physical condition has obviously declined a lot.
"Hurry up and make arrangements for the old lady's funeral; it probably won't be more than a day or two."
"Doctor, is there really no way to help?"
"The old man is already very old to live to eighty-eight. With the current medical conditions, there is really nothing we can do."
"Okay, thank you, doctor."
Ye Zhou overheard a conversation between the doctor and his two uncles.
An Youhe went home, washed up, changed her clothes, and came back looking visibly tired.
She went straight into the ward, stayed by her sleeping grandmother's side, and used her hands to help the old woman move her muscles and bones.
Ye Zhou went inside. He knew that An Youhe must have overheard the doctors' conversation outside. The girl lowered her head again, lost in thought.
He found a stool and sat down next to An Youhe, patting the girl's hair. "Don't worry, it's okay."
Grandma An was fast asleep, just like a newborn baby.
The fluctuations on the screen, however, represented her vital signs.
By evening, even the signs of a heartbeat were extremely faint.
An Youhe held a bowl of hot millet porridge and said to the old woman, "Grandma, it's time to eat."
The elderly man did not react much, and the waveform on the screen became even weaker.
"Grandma, wake up, don't sleep."
The doctor came in and looked, but just sighed and shook his head.
They've seen this kind of thing far too often, but sometimes they're powerless when faced with the end of life.
Ye Zhou received the call and quickly got up; the medical team had finally arrived.
The doctor was stunned to see a group of foreigners in white coats and a pile of medical kits!
"Who are you all?"
The foreigner in the lead spoke a lot of nonsense.
Ye Zhou pulled the doctor out, took An Youhe with him, and patiently explained to the doctor.
A light shone again in the girl's eyes, "Grandma can be saved, right!"
Ye Zhou nodded.
After all, these are top-tier medical teams worldwide, and the equipment they use is the most advanced.
Ten minutes later, a foreign doctor came out and asked Ye Zhou in fluent English. Ye Zhou then relayed to the doctor, "Doctor, could we please use your operating room? This is our second chance."
"Okay, then you can use it."
...
Ye Zhou held An Youhe's hand tightly, rubbing her small hand in his palm.
An Youhe reached out with her other hand, nervously lowering her head, gripping Ye Zhou's hand so tightly it hurt.
"Don't worry, everything will be alright."
"Thank you so much, Ye Zhou. You've done so much for me, even contacting other medical teams. It must have been very complicated."
"Silly girl, what are you talking about? Don't worry about trouble or not, as long as it's useful."
"Grandma will be alright."
The operating room door opened, and a stretcher was wheeled out.
An Youhe got up to go see, "Grandma."
The old woman opened her eyes, saw her granddaughter, and her first words were, "I'm hungry."
An Youhe wiped away her tears and smiled, "What do you want to eat? I'll go buy it."
Ye Zhou then communicated with the doctors abroad, who said the surgery went smoothly and the elderly man was out of immediate danger, but the end of his life was still beyond their control.
Grandma An lay in her hospital bed, drank a bowl of millet porridge, and said to her granddaughter, "Let's go home. I don't want to stay here anymore. I can see the whole world from here."
An Youhe turned to look at Ye Zhou, who nodded.
He had previously spoken with the doctor, and given his current condition, there was no longer any need for him to stay in the hospital.
The girl smiled and said to her grandmother, "Okay, let's go back today."
An Youhe pushed the elderly woman in a wheelchair out of the hospital.
Outside the hospital, the sun shone brightly under a blue sky with white clouds. Although it was winter, the pine trees remained lush and green, adding vitality and color to the winter landscape.
The old lady spread a thick blanket in front of her and sighed, "The air outside is so much better, so fresh."
An Youhe smiled and looked at Ye Zhou.
...
Grandma An was sunbathing in the yard when An Youhe bought a fish and was rinsing it at the tap. A dark-skinned middle-aged man came in through the door.
He is An Youhe's second uncle.
"mother."
An Youhe got up as well.
The second uncle glanced at An Youhe and walked towards the old lady.
The old lady opened her eyes, glanced at her second son, and said calmly, "What are you doing here?"
"Mom, have you written a will? What do you plan to do with this house?"
