On a dark and windy night, in a cemetery on the outskirts of Beijing, a tall and slender man was deftly clearing the weeds around the graves.
He held the sword in one hand, his movements as fluid as flowing water, and soon the graveyard was cleaned up by Shen Yun.
The man looked somewhat dejected, with a stubble around his chin about the length of a thumb. He was dressed in ordinary farmer's clothes, and there was no trace of the once mighty and domineering war god he once was.
Since the last time, Xiao Xuan has assigned someone to guard this cemetery, and Shen Yun has had no chance to come and pay his respects.
He lay in ambush for several days before he calculated the exact time when the guards would take their shifts to rest. It was during this one hour that no one was guarding the area.
Shen Yun timed it perfectly, bringing fine wine and food, wanting to come and see Ning Yin's mother and grandmother one last time, and to say goodbye to them.
Now he is a wanted prisoner on death row, and the once glorious war god is no more.
After Shen Yun conspired with Marquis Wuding to assassinate the Crown Prince, the General's Mansion was sealed off by the court. Surprisingly, apart from some furniture that couldn't be moved, there was nothing else in the huge mansion.
Even the dozen or so shops owned by the Wang family in Kyoto quietly closed down several days ago. Everything that could be sold in the shops was sold, and all the money disappeared without a trace.
Shen Yun was only focused on moving Wang Shi and Shen Jia out of the shop and didn't notice the situation at all. When he remembered, he found that the money in the shop, along with Wang Yang's family, had disappeared.
Although he was a military general, he had risen to a high position, so how could he not know the reason?
Relying on his mother's promotion and trust, Wang Yang gradually rose to become the general manager of all the shops, and he controlled all the accounts.
Previously, Wang refused to believe that Wang Yang was behind it, accusing Ning Yin of showing her face and trying to interfere in the General's Mansion's business.
She pushed Ning Yin away time and time again, unaware that her own younger brother was the complete ingrate.
Now the general's mansion has collapsed, the money is gone, and the glory has vanished into thin air.
If he hadn't managed to bribe the guard with a piece of fine Hetian jade, he probably would have been beheaded.
Where can one still live so peacefully? Perhaps someone else will be needed to clean one's grave.
Shen Yun thought about how all these things were caused by his own foolishness, stupidity, and arrogance.
If I had shown Ning Yin a little more care back then, and hadn't let my mother and sister bully her like that, would Ning Yin have stayed with me and gotten a divorce?
If he hadn't fallen into Yang Shuhuan's trap, would there still be a chance for things to turn around?
He acted like a fool, running to the border to risk his life for Xiao Xuan, and this is how Xiao Xuan repaid him.
Now, his only wish is to see Ning Yin one last time, and if he can get Ning Yin's forgiveness, that would be the best.
If Ning Yin truly refuses to forgive himself, he will simply disappear from Daqi and find a place where no one knows him to live out the rest of his life.
After all, Wang's health was deteriorating rapidly and she probably didn't have much time left, while her younger sister had become somewhat mentally unstable due to Yang Shujing's abuse.
A perfectly good family has fallen apart.
Ningyin had clearly reminded him of everything, so why didn't he listen?
Why trust a stranger? Why push your own sister into a fire pit?
Shen Yun's heart ached with each thud, and whenever he thought of these things, he wished he could kill himself.
What an incredibly stupid fool!
Shen Yun unscrewed a pot of wine, poured two cups, and then poured one for himself as well.
"Mother, Grandmother, Shen Yun has come to see you. Are you doing well over there?"
"I'm afraid I'll never have the chance to come and sweep your graves again, or visit you again. Please don't blame me."
Shen Yun knelt upright, muttering incantations, and then poured a cup of wine onto the ground.
"I know I've made far too many mistakes, sins I can never atone for in this lifetime. I'm sorry to Ayin, and I'm sorry to the trust that you two have placed in me!"
As he spoke, Shen Yun's eyes began to well up with tears. He sniffed, and suddenly, he raised his hand and slapped himself several times.
The slap was forceful, and the crisp sound of the slap was particularly clear in the night.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I was really wrong!"
Bright red finger marks were left on Shen Yun's face, and tears slid down his cheeks and fell to the ground.
“But I really can’t let go of Ayin. I don’t trust that bastard Xiao Xuan. I feel like he will harm Ayin. I want to sneak into the palace and bring her out, but I’m afraid Ayin won’t want to come with me.”
"I really have no other choice but to ask you two if you would agree."
Shen Yun spoke with a choked voice, every word trembling with emotion. He could have taken Ning Yin away last time, but Liu Lin had unexpectedly appeared out of nowhere.
Later, he was almost torn apart by five horses. In the moment before his death, he had thought things through very clearly.
All the glory, wealth, fame, merit, gold and silver treasures are not as important as having Ah Yin by my side as my wife.
He poured another glass of wine onto the ground, and as he watched the wine slowly seep into the soil, a smile suddenly appeared on his face.
"Mother, grandmother, you also want me to go find Ayin, right?"
“Ayin is all alone in this deep palace, facing all sorts of conspiracies and intrigues. I must find a way to bring her out.”
“From now on, I will regard her as someone more important than my own life. I will never let her suffer the slightest grievance, nor will I let my mother and sister bully her.”
Shen Yun's eyes were firm. If his A Yin had no feelings for him at all, she would not have married him in the first place, nor would she have cared so much about the General's Mansion, nor would she have shown mercy to him with her sword.
Thinking it over, he picked up his glass of wine, tilted his head back, and drank it all in one gulp.
Immediately, Shen Yun braced himself on the ground with both hands, kowtowed three times to the tombstone, and then got up.
"I'm leaving now. If I have the chance, I'll definitely bring Ayin to visit you two!"
Having said that, Shen Yun moved with extreme speed and disappeared into the vast night in an instant.
When he returned to a secluded thatched hut, Shen Yun saw Wang Shi leaning against the headboard, coughing incessantly, almost vomiting blood.
"Mother, Mother, are you alright?"
Shen Yun hurriedly put down his longsword, poured a cup of hot water from the table, and brought it to Wang Shi.
Wang's thin face was devoid of any color. Her fingers trembled as she took the cup. She had just taken a sip when she began to cough again. The only cup she had dropped fell to the ground and shattered into pieces.
"Yun'er, is your mother going to die?"
