Chapter 65 New Year's Eve Palace Banquet

As soon as she finished speaking, Ningyin seemed to hear someone knocking on the door outside.

"Miss, Miss, are you asleep?"

"It's going to snow heavily tonight. Judge Chen just gave us three quilts. I'll bring them in for you."

Upon hearing this, she panicked, her face turned deathly pale, and her mind went blank.

She was still being held in Xiao Xuan's arms. She looked up at the man above her, who showed no intention of leaving.

At this moment, Ning Yin was extremely nervous. She hadn't fully processed Xiao Xuan's words yet, and now Su Xin had come along.

If Su Xin were to catch a man in her room late at night, how would she explain it?

"You go first, someone's coming..."

Ning Yin reached out and pushed Xiao Xuan's firm, warm chest, but the man didn't move at all.

Instead, he looked at her with a mischievous grin, "Ah Ning, am I really that unpresentable?"

Xiao Xuan's magnetic voice carried a hint of grievance. Ning Yin didn't know that this man, who originally seemed quite serious, had changed so quickly.

She was having a hard time adjusting when Su Xin was still knocking on the door.

"Miss, am I coming in?"

Su Xin pushed the door open, but it was only slightly ajar; she hadn't had time to bolt it properly.

Just as Su Xin was about to push the door open and enter, Ning Yin looked up and pleaded with Xiao Xuan again.

Xiao Xuan was clearly charmed by Ning Yin's current appearance.

Her cheeks were rosy, her eyes were reproachful, and her cherry-like lips were crystal clear.

He absolutely adored her and didn't want to leave, but he was also worried about scaring the little girl.

He could only sigh and, taking advantage of the moment Ning Yin looked towards the door, gently pecked her cheek.

Her fair skin carried a unique fragrance, and Xiao Xuan felt a surge of unease.

"Then I'm leaving, Aning..."

"Mmm, hurry up..."

Xiao Xuan was told to leave, and with a wistful smile, he quickly turned and left the room.

Just as Xiao Xuan jumped out of the window, Su Xin came in carrying a quilt.

If the blanket hadn't been so big that it covered Su Xin's entire head, she probably would have been discovered just now.

Ning Yin looked out the dark window and let out a long sigh.

"Miss, were you asleep just now?"

Su Xin walked carefully, watching her step, and cautiously approached the bed, spreading the quilt on it.

"Yes, I heard your voice as soon as I lay down, so I got up and put on some clothes."

Su Xin nodded without thinking much about it, and then neatly arranged Ning Yin's quilt.

After making the bed, she turned her head and saw the cold wind whistling in through the open window.

No wonder, as soon as she came in, she felt that the young lady's room was colder than her own.

It's like there's such a big window open to our feelings.

Su Xin hurriedly ran over and closed the window.

"Miss, it's so cold, why don't you close the window..."

"Uh, maybe I was too tired today and forgot. No wonder it's so cold. I'm so forgetful."

“Miss, next time you should lock all the doors and windows before going to bed, just in case something gets in. I heard from Imperial Physician Chen that the palace is not peaceful at night, I'm afraid something…”

As Su Xin spoke, she herself began to feel afraid.

This morning, she overheard Imperial Physician Chen and several other physicians chatting, saying that every night in the palace, one could hear a woman's mournful cries.

Or there's a woman singing, her voice hesitant and plaintive, as if she's being killed.

However, no one could find out who the woman singing was.

Some of the older folks in the palace would say that those were concubines who had died unjustly, and that they came out at night specifically to seek revenge.

Therefore, once it gets dark, very few people dare to come out.

As Su Xin spoke, she began to feel a chill run down her spine, and she was too afraid to go back to her room to sleep.

"Miss, I'm scared..."

"What's there to be afraid of? Why would a living person be afraid of such an ethereal thing? The most terrifying thing is the human heart!"

Ningyin glanced at the trembling Suxin and couldn't help but say again, "If you want to sleep with me, just say so."

"Hehe, miss, is that alright?"

Su Xin's round face revealed two dimples. Seeing Ning Yin nod, she hurriedly helped her change clothes.

The bed was large enough for two people, and with an extra new quilt, the two of them slept very warmly.

Around 3 AM, Ningyin woke up from the heat and threw off the blankets covering her.

In a daze, she closed her eyes, preparing to continue sleeping.

But then, she seemed to hear some strange noises.

Last night, Suxin told her that she heard a woman's mournful cries and singing during the night.

Now, it seems like that's the kind of sound she's hearing.

Screams and sighs, mingled with the cold wind, reached her ears.

Su Xin was sleeping soundly beside her, even snoring, but Ning Yin's consciousness was becoming increasingly clear.

The sound was elusive, sometimes near and sometimes far.

After crying for a while, the person began to sing, their high-pitched voice seemingly able to penetrate walls.

Ning Yin couldn't help but tremble, and her heart started pounding.

Unexpectedly, what Judge Chen said was true, but she didn't believe in ghosts and gods.

The candlelight in the room flickered, as if it were pulsating in rhythm with the singing.

Ning Yin got up, stuffed two wads of cotton into her ears, then hid under the covers and covered herself up tightly, which barely blocked out the eerie sound.

The next day, Ning Yin really didn't sleep well. She stayed in bed for a while before opening her tired eyes.
