Chapter 83 Confession
Lakes in the north freeze over in winter.
There was a thick layer of ice on the Chuixing Lake, covered with brand new and perfect white snow.
Yun Chen pushed Huo Gannian and walked forward with a squeaking sound. Snowflakes fell on their shoulders, which seemed to indicate that they would grow old together.
They walked a long way until the lights of the banquet by the lake became dim, and then Huo Gannian signaled to stop.
"Young Master, the day I came back was when the assassins from the Yu family came to kill me." Yun Chen hesitated for a moment and asked the question she had always wanted to ask:
"The assassin's knife was already in front of you. Young Master, you could have dodged it, so why didn't you?"
Huo Gannian said, "Maybe I've become a lot slower and dazed since you were away for three months."
She shook her head, "Master, you are lying."
He didn't answer, just chuckled.
She frowned and asked him seriously:
"At that time, I saw the word 'give up' in the young master's eyes. Young master... why do you suddenly not want to live anymore?"
As expected, it is always his Yun Chen who understands him the best.
That day, at that moment, Huo Gannian had one of the few times in his life when he had thoughts of suicide.
Although it was only a brief moment, she saw it clearly.
Why would he want to give up for a moment when so many guards were fighting for him?
Was it because he was exhausted from dealing with so many assassination attempts over the years? Or was it because he was caught up in so many conspiracies and schemes that he found himself in an inescapable swamp of political intrigue?
Probably neither.
Maybe it was just because she was missing for three months, and he had no appetite and couldn't sleep for three months.
Because everyone can go looking for her, find her, and verify every piece of news about her.
He was the only one confined to this small wheelchair, waiting from dawn to dusk, and from dusk to dawn.
Watching the sun rise and set, time passed by little by little, but he felt like a piece of wood that had been rotten for millions of years.
There was nothing he could do except wait for replies from the spies and guards.
He was confident in the excellent work ability of the Huo Gang and would never do anything perfunctory, but he couldn't help but ask:
"Are you sure? Is it really not Yun Chen?"
"Are you sure there's nothing missing? Go check it again."
He endured this anxious pain for three months.
How he wanted to go find her himself, turn the world upside down, put a knife to the old emperor's neck, and force him to tell him her whereabouts.
But he couldn't do it.
"Yun Chen, I won't do it again. I promise you."
His tone was firm, which made her happy. She said "hmm" in an excited tone, picked up the snow at her feet, rolled it into a fist-sized snowball, ran to a place not far away, and stopped, saying with a smile:
"Young Master, once you've spoken, you can't take it back. If you break your promise, I'll dig a snow pit for you to bury."
He laughed, "Why, you want to have a snowball fight with me? I can't run away."
She ran back and put the snowball in his hand, then ran away again, waving happily:
"You want to hit me? If you can hit me, I'll give you a blow to the head!"
So, she dodged his extremely accurate snowball attacks while also making snowballs to throw at him.
She ran closer and farther away, having a lot of fun.
Finally, he dropped a small snowball on the top of her head. Snowflakes fluttered and fell on her eyebrows and eyelashes, making her deer eyes look lively and like an elf in the snow.
He smiled gently and waved: "Come here, I'll pat you."
She obediently walked over and squatted, letting him pat the top of her head and wipe away the snowflakes on her eyebrows and eyes.
The back of his finger gently stroked the end of her eyebrow and stayed on her temple for a long time. He could vaguely feel the fine hairs on her cheek, which made him feel itchy inside.
Seeing that her hands were red from the cold, he first carefully wiped the snow off her palms with a handkerchief, then took out a pair of deerskin gloves from under the wheelchair and put them on her.
During the whole process, he kept holding her hand until it was warm.
She raised her hands and waved them, looking at the delicate and beautiful but bulging gloves, and said:
"Master, the gloves are very warm, but they affect my ability to hold the sword."
He seemed to recall many past events in an instant, looked at her, shook his head slowly, and said firmly:
"No, Yun Chen, from now on, matters like handling a sword will be handled by other personal guards."
She misunderstood and immediately knelt on one knee, saying anxiously:
"Young Master! Are you still suspicious of me after the three months I've been missing? I really didn't betray you, I just can't tell you because it would be dangerous for you! Young Master, don't you want me as your personal guard anymore?"
He could no longer control himself, and instantly threw all his rationality to the back of his mind, leaving all his concerns behind for thousands of miles.
Even though he was afraid that she would be startled and dodge, he still bent down regardless, approached the little face that was so anxious that it was about to burst into tears, and hugged her in his arms.
He lowered his head to the crook of her neck, hugging her but not daring to use force. His heart was beating wildly, almost jumping out of his chest to show her.
"Chen'er, how could I not want you...how could I..."
She was still in his arms, looking up at him blankly.
"Young Master..." She used the last bit of her rationality to recall Xun Yan's words and looked at him infatuatedly, "Young Master, during these three months outside, I occasionally wondered whether I should leave the Huo Gang... It's pretty good in the Huo Gang..."
He stared into her eyes intently, and asked in a low, magnetic voice, with a captivating power:
"Then what?"
"And then... then I came back..." Her brain was confused by the pleasant voice and she began to speak incoherently.
The corners of his mouth couldn't help but rise, "Why?"
"Because Young Master, you are in the Huo Gang."
As soon as she finished speaking, he was stunned.
Then, like the golden sun in the sky, illuminating the frozen Chuixing Lake with spring, he revealed a brilliant smile she had never seen before, without any disguise:
"Are you expressing your feelings to me?"
She was embarrassed and panicked, and hurriedly shook her head to deny it, but she forced herself to suppress the cowardice in her heart, looked at him, nodded vigorously, and then shook her head vigorously.
Her little head shook back and forth like a rattle, which made him laugh out loud. He thought she was funny and cute.
Finally releasing his arms from hugging her, he sat back in his chair, trying to control his expression, and said:
"I wanted to help you, but I couldn't. You have to get up by yourself."
She stood up stupidly, her mind in turmoil, not knowing whether to nod or shake her head.
Yun Chen was afraid that if she nodded, she would have to tell him the horrifying fact that she was a woman disguised as a man, and she would probably have to make things worse by describing all the times she had been hanging out with men in the past. She was afraid that he would dislike her in the future.
But when she shook her head, she felt really reluctant.
Looking at Huo Gannian, he was suppressing the restlessness in his heart, as if he was using all his strength to stop a horse that was about to run away.
Looking at her blushing face, frowning brows, nodding and shaking her head, he kept saying to himself:
Almost there, just the last bit.
No rush, no hurry.
