Chapter 257 The Chase

Chapter 257 The Chase

The moonlight outside the window was bright, and apart from the chirping of cicadas, there was hardly any other sound.

Kong Wange looked around but didn't find anything unusual.

Could it be... that I smelled it wrong?

Just as I was pondering this, a dark figure suddenly appeared from the side.

Kong Wange was startled and almost screamed.

The shadowy figure, however, had anticipated this and covered her mouth with a large hand.

Kong Wange let out a whimpering sound, and with a flick of her wrist, she was about to stab the needle into the dark figure.

"Wanwan, it's me."

Kong Wange stopped abruptly when the man's voice came out.

When Murong Ting saw that she stopped moving, he knew she had recognized him and let go of her hand.

As soon as she let go, Kong Wange whispered, "Murong Ting, you..."

"Shh..." Murong Ting gestured to her, "Let's go inside first and talk."

Kong Wange sensed the tension in his tone, so she stopped talking and took a step to the side.

Murong Ting braced himself against the windowsill and leaped in through the window.

Kong Wange glanced around the window and, seeing that it was dark and no one was paying attention, closed the window tightly.

She turned around and saw Murong Ting sitting on the sofa opposite her bed, drinking tea.

She walked over a few steps and frowned: "You're quite impolite."

Murong Ting didn't speak, put down his teacup, and reached out his hand to her.

Kong Wange frowned but didn't move.

Murong Ting sighed, then got up himself and grabbed her arm.

Kong Wange nimbly dodged it.

"Wanwan, don't hide, let me hug you."

The man's voice was deep, his tone both helpless and coquettish.

Kong Wange silently rolled her eyes: "The 'handsome man' trick doesn't work on me. Tell me, what's going on? What are you doing here so late at night?"

Murong Ting's eyes were filled with affection as he said in a deep voice, "I missed you."

Kong Wange raised an eyebrow, her expression one of utter disbelief: "You've thought this far ahead, your arm is even split open."

Murong Ting stiffened.

He then regained his composure and said cheekily, "Yes, Wanwan, I've missed you so much I'm practically tearing my hair out, but you won't even give me a hug. You're so heartless."

Kong Wange sneered, and without saying a word, she bent down, grabbed his left arm, and pressed it down on his upper arm.

"Hiss..." Even though Kong Wange controlled her strength, Murong Ting still gasped: "Wanwan, are you trying to murder your husband?"

"I'm just checking to see if it's cracked or cut by something." Kong Wange withdrew her hand, crossed her arms, and looked down at him.

Murong Ting: "..."

He cleared his throat and said, "Alright, I'm not teasing you anymore. Actually, I just climbed down the wall and accidentally got scratched by a tree branch?"

Kong Wange said expressionlessly, "What, are the Wen family's trees different from others? Do they grow knives?"

She had only pressed it casually, yet her hand was already stained with blood. The wound was at least a centimeter deep. How could such a serious injury have been caused by a tree branch?

Murong Ting knew he couldn't fool her, so he sighed and said, "Alright, I was discovered while climbing over the wall and was chased as a thief."

Kong Wange was taken aback, her eyes filled with confusion: "The Wen family doesn't recognize you?"

Murong Ting lowered his brows, his eyes flickering with light, and when he looked up again, his smile was wide open. He twirled the teacup in his hand and said, "Wanwan, isn't all this for you? To avoid arousing suspicion from the Wen family, I deliberately covered my face to see you. Having to sneak around to see my wife, I, Murong Ting, am such a pitiful man."

This man, if you don't discipline him for three days, he'll be climbing on the roof and tearing off the tiles. I really don't know which of his words are true and which are false.

Kong Wange didn't believe him and continued to ask, "Even if they thought you were a thief, the Wen family wouldn't have bothered to be so ruthless, would they? Besides, with your physical condition, who could have injured you like this?"

"Wanwan, I didn't realize I was so important to you?"

Kong Wange: "..."

You're such a pro at grasping the essentials!

Murong Ting smirked, "Two fists can't beat four hands. No matter how strong I am, I can't defeat their numbers. But, Wanwan, don't worry, I've already shaken them off."

He confidently took a sip of tea: "They can't catch up to this place."

As soon as he finished speaking, there was a knock on the door.

Kong Wange and Murong Ting immediately fell silent.

No one answered from inside, but the person outside seemed determined to keep knocking until the door was opened.

Kong Wange paused for a moment, then asked, "Who is it?"

“Miss Kong, I am a servant of the head of the family. The Wen family was burgled tonight, and I would like to confirm your safety.”

Kong Wange immediately turned to look at Murong Ting. Their eyes met, and both of them saw speechlessness in each other's eyes.

Kong Wange glared at him and asked in a low voice, "Didn't you say you were going to shake them off?!"

Murong Ting looked somewhat embarrassed and remarked, "Are all the Wen family members reincarnated celestial dogs? Their noses are so sensitive..."

Kong Wange raised her eyebrows, feigning anger: "What did you say?"

Murong Ting realized what was happening and was startled. He said awkwardly, "Uh, except for my wife and mother-in-law."

Kong Wange glared at him and let him off the hook for the time being.

Murong Ting broke out in a cold sweat.

There was no sound from inside, so the questioning tone became even more pronounced: "Miss Kong?"

Kong Wange cleared her throat and said to the door, "It's very safe here. I haven't seen any thieves. You can look elsewhere."

The person outside paused, and just when Kong Wange thought the person had been sent away, she heard him speak again: "The head of the family ordered that every corner of the Wen residence must be searched. Miss Kong, please don't make things difficult for me. Please open the door for me so I can take a look. It would be too dangerous if a thief hid in while you weren't looking."

Kong Wange thought to herself that this person was really difficult to deal with, and took a deep breath and said, "Okay, I'm taking a shower, please wait a moment while I put on some clothes."

After replying, she turned around and pushed Murong Ting toward the back window: "Quick, climb out first."

As she spoke, she was about to push open the window.

However, just before he could make a move, Murong Ting pressed his hand down: "Wait."

Kong Wange paused: "What's wrong?"

"There's someone there."

Is someone there? Outside the window?

Kong Wange was startled and looked out through the crack in the window.

Indeed, at some point, three or four servants had appeared in her courtyard.

Every corner was thoroughly guarded.

The people outside were still urging, "Miss Kong, are you done yet? If you don't open the door soon, we're coming in."

"Ah, right away." Kong Wange gritted her teeth and pushed Murong Ting into the dressing room: "Quick, crawl into the closet."

Murong Ting deliberately dawdled: "Wanwan, why are you in such a panic? I'm not a real thief. It's okay if they catch me."

"You're fine, but I am. Stop arguing, go inside!"

Kong Wange opened the cabinet door and, before Murong Ting could struggle, pushed him inside by pressing his head down.

This cabinet is made of pear wood. It's not particularly eye-catching, but it's quite spacious, more than enough to fit Murong Ting inside.

As soon as Murong Ting went in, Kong Wange stuffed all her clothes into the cabinet and covered him with them. Then she took a box, dumped all the contents into the cabinet, and sprayed perfume into it.
