Chapter 697 The Two Who Ran Away with Their Bills
Wan Qingzhou immediately rolled her eyes, her first reaction being to vomit.
However, looking at the girl's bright smile, he found that the taste wasn't so unacceptable after all.
As the maltose melted in his mouth, he chewed a few times and said, "It's alright."
Wen Zhiyi snorted: "I told you it was delicious, now you believe me, right?"
As the sun set, its orange glow illuminated the girl's face. Wan Qingzhou looked at her for a while, then reached out and pursed his lips.
Wen Zhiyi was stunned for a moment: "W-what are you doing?"
Wan Qingzhou held up her hand: "You've got sesame seeds on your lips."
Wen Zhiyi belatedly exclaimed "Oh."
Wan Qingzhou curled her lips into a smile: "What do you think I'm going to do?"
Wen Zhiyi looked at him with disdain and said loudly, "What do you think? We've only met twice, is it appropriate for us to be this intimate?"
"It's really not suitable." Wan Qingzhou spread his hands, pointed to the small sesame seeds on his fingers, and said, "How about I stick them back on for you?"
Wen Zhiyi: "...You lecherous scoundrel!"
Wan Qingzhou: "So, no matter what I say, I can't clear my name?"
"The innocent are innocent, but the fact that you're trying to wash your hands of it proves you're no longer innocent!"
Wan Qingzhou: "..."
Wen Zhiyi strode forward, finally winning a round. A smile unconsciously crept onto her lips, but she deliberately suppressed it and turned back to call out, "What are you standing there for? Keep up! Aren't you going to eat?"
The two entered a beef noodle restaurant that claimed to be the best in Kyoto.
The owner was bald, tall and strong, and very enthusiastic. When he saw them come in, he put the menu in front of them and said, "Brother and sister, what would you like to eat? Order whatever you like!"
Wen Zhiyi placed the menu in front of Wan Qingzhou: "It's on me, you order!"
"Be true to yourself? Don't feel bad about it."
Wen Zhiyi scoffed, "You're being a bit too generous. I can afford to treat you to a meal."
She knows the prices in Kyoto like the back of her hand; how could she possibly eat her way out of poverty?
Wan Qingzhou chuckled at her haughty little expression and pushed the menu back: "Never mind, you can do it, so you don't feel like I'm ripping you off."
Wen Zhiyi glared at him: "Am I that kind of person? Fine, I'll order then."
As she spoke, she quickly checked off several dishes on the menu.
Seeing this, Wan Qingzhou coughed lightly and said, "That's enough, there are only two of us."
Wen Zhiyi said nonchalantly, "What are you afraid of? It's my treat anyway, so don't act like you've never seen anything like this before. Just eat whatever you order, understand?"
After she finished speaking, she marked the last dish and handed the menu back to the owner.
"Two bowls of beef noodles, stir-fried shredded potatoes, Sichuan-style chicken, roasted lamb, and crispy lotus root with three kinds of vegetables, right?" the owner asked.
Wen Zhiyi nodded, and was about to say something when Wan Qingzhou next to her added, "Crispy lotus root and diced vegetables, no garlic."
"Alright, please wait a moment, it'll be ready soon!" The boss replied and turned to leave.
Wen Zhiyi exclaimed "Eh!" and looked at him with bright eyes: "You don't eat garlic either? We're kindred spirits!"
Wan Qingzhou gave a vague "hmm," not saying that he didn't order garlic not because he didn't eat it, but because he saw the disdain in her eyes when she passed by the garlic vermicelli snack stall, and guessed that she didn't like it.
He knew that if he told her this, she would definitely press him about how he had such good observation skills and how he remembered things so clearly.
He couldn't answer these questions because he didn't know either.
In fact, aside from his duties, he was someone who rarely took such trivial matters to heart.
Just moments ago, he was standing next to Wen Zhiyi and glanced at her casually, and he even remembered how long she frowned.
It can be described as metaphysics.
A short while later, the owner's two bowls of noodles arrived, along with the side dishes the two had ordered.
The two had walked for quite a while and were really hungry, so they slurped down two bowls of noodles in no time.
Surprisingly, this "Number One Beef Noodles in Kyoto" claim isn't exaggerated at all.
The noodles were chewy and springy, the beef chunks were fragrant, and the side dishes were also fresh and delicious.
The two of them ate to their hearts' content, and in the end, not even a drop of soup was left.
Wen Zhiyi leaned back in her chair, rubbing her belly: "Hey, this is my first time at this shop. I didn't expect it to be such a hidden gem. I hope it stays open forever."
"Don't worry, it won't go bankrupt. As long as you come often, that's fine," Wan Qingzhou joked.
"What do you mean? You think I can eat a lot? You've eaten just as much!" Wen Zhiyi rolled her eyes, then reached for her wallet: "Go ask the boss for the bill."
Wan Qingzhou hummed in response and was about to call for help when Wen Zhiyi stopped him, saying, "Wait!"
Wan Qingzhou: "?"
Wen Zhiyi touched around, then confirmed something and stood still.
A sense of foreboding welled up in Wan Qingzhou's heart: "What's wrong with you?"
Wen Zhiyi looked at Wan Qingzhou with a mournful face: "What should I do? It seems like my wallet has been stolen."
Wan Qingzhou: "??"
He was speechless: "I knew you were so generous earlier, ordering so much, and you were just waiting for me here."
Wen Zhiyi: "!!!"
"No, I didn't mean to renege on my debt. I really did lose my wallet! I probably didn't notice where I dropped it when I was shopping," Wen Zhiyi explained.
"Alright, alright, stop pretending. This meal is on me. Luckily, I saved up some money from begging."
After saying that, he immediately called to the owner, "Check, please!"
The shop owner quickly ran over, pressed a few keys on his calculator, and then said with a smile, "That'll be thirty yuan and eighty-three cents in total."
Wan Qingzhou paused as she was about to take out her money, looking at the shopkeeper in disbelief: "How much do you want?"
The shopkeeper replied matter-of-factly, "Thirty yuan and eighty-three cents."
"Are you robbing us? What did we eat that cost so much?!"
"Two bowls of beef noodles, eight yuan each, sixteen yuan for two bowls; stir-fried shredded potatoes, one yuan and eighty cents; Sichuan-style chicken, four yuan; roasted lamb, seven yuan; crispy lotus root, three kinds of diced meat, two yuan; plus a three-cent fee for the table and napkins, totaling thirty yuan and eighty-three cents," the owner said fluently.
Wan Qingzhou smiled at the boss and said, "Please wait a moment."
He then pulled Wen Zhiyi aside and whispered in her ear, "Didn't you check the prices when you ordered?"
Wen Zhiyi felt a little guilty and said, "I saw it. Um... you pay for this meal first, and I'll pay you back double when I get my allowance next month."
Is the question now about who paid the invitation?!
Wan Qingzhou covered her right cheek with one hand and whispered through gritted teeth to Wen Zhiyi, "I don't have enough money!"
You know, a bowl of beef noodles for them usually costs no more than two yuan, and even with these side dishes, it wouldn't cost more than ten yuan.
Who would have thought that this meal would cost over thirty yuan!
Wen Zhiyi realized that it made sense; for a beggar like him, this amount of money was probably an astronomical sum!
Now she was truly panicked: "What do we do? Are we going to be stuck here doing hard labor?!"
Seeing the two men dawdling over their payment without actually paying, the shopkeeper sensed something was wrong. His previous cheerful expression vanished, and his tone hardened, tinged with suspicion, as he asked, "Gentlemen, who's going to pay for this?"
Wan Qingzhou raised her head and said naturally, "We're just discussing this, don't worry, you'll get your share."
As he spoke, he turned to Wen Zhiyi and whispered, "Have you ever dined and dashed?"
Wen Zhiyi exclaimed "Huh?" with a bewildered expression.
"When I say 'run,' you run with me, understand?"
After Wan Qingzhou finished speaking, he got up and took two steps outside, giving her a look that signaled her to follow him.
