Chapter 16 Painting

Youqing's good appetite clearly affected Kangxi, causing him to eat an extra half bowl of rice.

As an emperor who valued health, even half a bowl of rice was a surprisingly small amount for Liang Jiugong.

After finishing their meal, the leftovers were cleared away. Youqing, having eaten and drunk her fill, felt a bit lazy and content.

She squinted comfortably, and Kangxi, seeing that it looked similar to his favorite pure white cat in the cat and dog room, couldn't help but smile slightly.

"Did you like the food tonight?"

Youqing nodded: "The Imperial Kitchen's cooking skills are naturally excellent."

After transmigrating, she realized that the imperial chef's dishes were indeed extraordinary. Although some were old-fashioned, they were still more varied than the dishes she ate as an ordinary person in modern times.

The food served to the emperor was especially exquisite, beyond compare.

Upon hearing this, Emperor Kangxi smiled and instructed Liang Jiugong to deliver a reward to the imperial chefs who would be in charge of cooking that evening.

When Youqing heard about the rewards being bestowed, she fell silent for a moment, and couldn't help but marvel at Kangxi's wealth and generosity.

In summer, it gets dark late, and it's still bright outside after dinner. Kangxi naturally couldn't say he wanted to sleep at this time. Even if he wanted to go straight to bed, it would be too abrupt for him as a man for the first time.

So he said, "Go to the study and grind ink for me."

Youqing naturally couldn't refuse.

Jiangxue Pavilion has several rooms. She used the one next to hers as a study. There weren't many books in the study, because classical Chinese was too difficult to read. Learning classical Chinese in modern times was difficult enough, and she didn't want to continue to "torture" herself in ancient times.

Out of sight, out of mind; so there aren't many books in the study.

Although there weren't many books in the study, Youqing had arranged it quite nicely. It was more of a place for Youqing to pass the time than a study.

When life gets boring, you always need to find something to do. Decorating the room and seeing it transform under your own hands gives Youqing a great sense of accomplishment.

"Your study is quite elegantly decorated. Did you decorate it yourself?"

Emperor Kangxi had people observe Youqing's every move, so he naturally knew that this study was her creation in her spare time.

Youqing nodded: "Yes, as long as it didn't offend His Majesty's eyes."

"The study is nicely decorated; you've put a lot of thought into it. However, I don't see many books in it."

Youqing then spoke the truth: "I am dull-witted and did not study much when I was young. I found the books sent by the Imperial Household Department to be obscure and difficult to understand. I was willing but unable to do so, so I simply did not put so many books in the study. It would be a pity to leave them idle and collect dust. I only put a few history books that I found interesting, and I would read them in my spare time."

Kangxi knew about her family background. She lost her mother at a young age, and her father later married a new woman, so her life was naturally not easy. Being able to read a little was something she had worked hard for. Historical books, compared to the Four Books and Five Classics, were more story-based and easier to read.

"If you find it obscure and difficult to understand, I will have someone send you some simple and easy-to-understand travelogues and miscellaneous books later. Chengying is literate and has a background as a female official, so her knowledge is quite good."

Youqing was taken aback upon hearing this. Sure enough, Chengying was indeed somewhat unusual.

Palace eunuchs and maids were not allowed to read, but Chengying was not only skilled in martial arts but also literate, which was a legitimate reason for her to be literate.

You Qing thought that someone like Cheng Ying looked somewhat like an ancient secret guard.

Thinking about it this way, Youqing suddenly shuddered.

If she really was a secret guard, what would Kangxi be doing sending secret guards to her side? Training secret guards in ancient times must have been very difficult. Was it worth the effort for a mere concubine like her?

Seeing that her complexion was not right, Kangxi asked with concern, "Are you feeling unwell?"

Youqing quickly shook her head: "I'm fine, Your Majesty, thank you for your concern."

Kangxi took a piece of drawing paper, spread it out on the desk, and asked Youqing to grind the ink. Then he made a painting.

Youqing watched from the side as the painting took shape. She recognized the scene in the painting as the view of Jiangxue Pavilion.

Then a person appeared in the scene. It was an ink painting. Although it was clear that the person in the painting was a woman, her face was not clear. But when she saw the woman's clothes, Youqing fell silent. It was the same clothes she was wearing.

So the person in the painting is her?

Is that woman whose face is blurred?

Emperor Kangxi visited Jiangxuexuan twice, and she was inside the room both times, while the woman in the painting was in the flower bushes in the courtyard.

Having grown accustomed to modern photography techniques, it took me a while to get used to Kangxi's paintings of people within landscapes.

Kangxi stopped writing. Youqing had been standing for a long time when she suddenly staggered and lost her balance.

Kangxi quickly helped the man up and asked, "Are you alright?"

Youqing shook her head: "It's nothing."

My legs are a little numb.

Upon hearing this, Kangxi smiled and pulled her into his arms. Youqing lost her balance and ended up sitting on his lap. Youqing was startled by his sudden action.

She exclaimed "Ah!" and then blushed.

My whole body stiffened.

This is a man's thigh, a young woman's first time sitting in a sedan chair!

Kangxi laughed out loud, "She really is a little girl!"

"Look, do you like this painting?"

Youqing nestled in Kangxi's arms, not daring to move, and looked at the newly painted picture on the table: "Your Majesty, is this a painting of me?"

His tone carried a hint of doubt and uncertainty.

"It's obviously a drawing of you, who else could it be? You silly girl." He said, patting her head.

Emperor Kangxi's voice was usually quite dignified, but the person who spoke these words clearly lowered their voice, making it sound somewhat magnetic.

It sounds so good.

Youqing has a slight voice control ability. She sits on Kangxi's lap, and when Kangxi speaks, it's no different from him whispering in her ear.
