After lunch, Youqing took Sangzhu into the house, took out the solar furnace that she had bought for 100 gold coins the night before, and some vegetables, and said to her, "I can cook. If the kitchen staff makes things difficult for you in the future, don't argue with them, lest you get hurt."
Sangzhu took care of all of Youqing's food and clothing, so she naturally knew what was in the house. The stove that appeared out of nowhere, and all these vegetables, were too magical.
Although Sangzhu knew that Youqing was a fairy descended from heaven, she still couldn't help but be surprised when she actually saw these things in front of her.
"My lady, did you conjure all of these up?"
Youqing smiled and said, "I guess so!"
Sangzhu exclaimed with delight, "Your Highness is truly a fairy descended from heaven! This is wonderful!"
Youqing said, "Don't be too happy yet. Although there is a stove and vegetables, there is no oil, salt, soy sauce and vinegar. There is still some of your monthly salary from last month. Go and see if you can buy some from the kitchen."
Sangzhu said, "That's fine. I know a palace maid who works under the nanny who makes purchases in the kitchen. It shouldn't be too difficult."
Suddenly, he remembered something he desperately needed: "See if we can get a pot from the Imperial Household Department, it doesn't have to be too big."
Sangzhu considered the Ministry of Internal Affairs' character for a moment; a pot, some silver, and it probably wouldn't be difficult.
"This servant will go to the Imperial Household Department to take a look later."
Sangzhu cleared away the dishes and then went to the Imperial Household Department. She spent two taels of silver to get two pots. The pots weren't very big, but at least they were usable.
Then she went to the kitchen and met her acquaintances who had entered the palace at the same time.
"What does Sister Sangzhu want with me?"
Sangzhu explained her purpose: "Sister Yunqing, you know that I am currently serving under Consort Shu in Jingyang Palace. Consort Shu is unlucky, but fortunately she has a good temperament. I just want some peace and quiet and have no intention of leaving Consort Shu's side. However, some people are still deliberately making things difficult for me. Just today, when I went to get my lunch, I was slapped twice before I could get it. I didn't get my own lunch. Consort Shu is considerate and allowed me to cook some porridge in a clay pot to fill my stomach. Now that you are working under Granny An and are in charge of purchasing, I wanted to ask if you could help me bring some oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, rice, and the like."
Yun Qingren was in the kitchen and knew about Sangzhu's situation; she had also heard about the two slaps.
She's not a bad person; her family has some connections in the palace. Granny An is an elder in her brother-in-law's family, which is why she was able to secure this good job so securely.
Yun Qing was aware of Sang Zhu's family background and felt some sympathy for her, but in the palace, sympathy was the worst thing one could do, so Yun Qing didn't say anything more.
Now that the person has come to him for help, Yun Qing really can't bring himself to refuse.
A little oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, and rice is really nothing.
Yun Qing asked, "How many do you want?"
If they want too much, there's nothing she can do.
Sangzhu immediately beamed with joy upon hearing this: "Thank you, Sister Yunqing, I don't need much..."
Sangzhu said the amount she needed was indeed not much, just enough for two people to eat for one or two months. If you spread it out, it wouldn't even be enough for the entire Forbidden City for a single day! And that's just for the seasonings; she only needed about half a month's worth of rice.
Yun Qing agreed.
"Alright, I'll go get it for you. Just wait here."
Sangzhu quickly thanked her, "Thank you, sister."
After Yunqing gave her the items, Sangzhu handed Yunqing a purse containing five taels of silver.
Yun Qing declined, saying, "There's no need for such a small amount."
Sangzhu pushed it back, saying, "Sister Yunqing, you must accept it. This was specially instructed by Consort Shu. If you don't accept it, I won't dare to trouble you again next time."
In the end, Yun Qing accepted it.
That little thing is certainly not worth five taels of silver, but silver paves the way, and it'll be easier to get things done in the future.
By evening, the pot, vegetables, oil, salt, soy sauce, and rice were all ready, though the food was rather simple, but the two of them could have a nice meal.
However, even though it's a special meal, you still have to go to the kitchen. If you don't go to the kitchen during mealtimes and someone with ulterior motives sees you doing so, there will definitely be problems.
Before Sangzhu left, Youqing specifically instructed her: "If anyone makes things difficult for you, just show weakness first. Don't wrong yourself, and never slap yourself in the face again."
Sangzhu: "Don't worry, Your Highness, I will keep it in mind."
Sangzhu went to the kitchen, where she still dealt with the same eunuch from lunch.
As usual, I arrived late for dinner, and just like at lunchtime, I was told that there weren't enough ingredients.
Sangzhu was no longer afraid of letting her mistress go hungry, so she pretended to be angry and took the bok choy and rice soup back home. On the way back, she was still full of anger, which made the palace maids who accompanied her feel more sympathy.
But then she thought about her own mistress, who was also from Jingyang Palace and was not favored, so she wasn't much better off. If she offended someone one day, she would suffer the same fate. So she started to sympathize with her mistress and then sympathized with her own mistress.
Sangzhu's anger was partly acted, but also partly genuine.
Of course she was furious. If the young mistress weren't a fairy descended from heaven, she might be able to get food by slapping herself once or twice, but if it happened too many times, slapping herself probably wouldn't work anymore, and then the young mistress would go hungry.
The young lady's body is already weak; if she were to suffer from hunger, it would be tantamount to taking her life.
"My lady, look, the kitchen has only provided bok choy and rice porridge."
Sangzhu was also annoyed, but she was truly powerless for the time being. Ancient life was far more cruel than she had imagined. From the original owner's memories, she could see how lowly human life was, and how a slight mistake could lead to eternal damnation. She did not want to die yet, so in order to live, she could only drag her weak body to survive for now.
