Under the system's guidance, Youqing first left the study and tinkered around in another room.
System: "That's great, now you can sleep peacefully."
Youqing didn't actually do much; she just slightly adjusted something that resembled a mechanism, which was very simple.
Are you sure there won't be any problems?
"Host, you need to trust the system. What about the trust between us?"
Youqing replied with two words: "Hehe!"
It was already late, and she was exhausted from the day. She only glanced at the darkroom briefly and didn't have the energy to examine it carefully.
After leaving the dark room, she washed her face and went straight to sleep. Since there were no ghosts or strange noises, Youqing slept until she naturally woke up. When she woke up the next day, she asked the system, "What time is it?"
"Ten o'clock in the morning."
"It's getting late!"
Too lazy to make breakfast, she simply took some snacks from the farm and drank a glass of milk produced by the system before remembering the dark room from last night.
She decided to go down and take a look today.
After having breakfast, which was actually noon, there was no need for lunch. She went straight to the dark room without even opening the front door.
The dark room during the day was not much different from the dark room at night; it was pitch black. After coming down, Youqing turned on the sun lamp.
With the lights on, Youqing went to the study, covered her mouth and nose, did a quick cleaning, and then began to look around. The books in the study were mostly the Four Books and Five Classics, which should be the collection of a scholar preparing for the imperial examinations, and were not very extensive.
There was no writing brush, ink, paper, or inkstone; after searching through all the books, Youqing only found a letter.
When Youqing opened the letter, she saw that it was written in a woman's handwriting. After reading the contents, Youqing understood why the house was haunted.
Granny Wang once said that a scholar died in this house last year. He kept muttering things like, "Don't kill him, fox spirit," and eventually he was scared to death.
Actually, the reason the scholar was scared to death was because someone deliberately did it; in a way, it was a case of evil being punished.
The deceased scholar was named Wei Wende. His name sounded righteous and scholarly, and he was indeed a scholar, just like his name. He was good at studying, but his family was poor.
He came from a family of farmers and scholars, with more than ten acres of land. They made a living by farming, and the whole family farmed to support his studies. He was both capable and lucky, and at the age of eighteen, he passed the imperial examination at the county level, and his ranking was quite good, which was a remarkable thing in the local area.
Because of his good looks and the fact that he had passed the imperial examination at a young age and was considered to have a promising future, he was chosen by Guo Yue, the original owner of the courtyard, who wanted him to be his son-in-law. Wei Wende valued the Guo family's wealth, and the Guo family was indeed well-off at the time. Both parties were willing, so they formed a marriage alliance.
After Wei Wende and Miss Guo got married, Guo Yue wanted Wei Wende to live in his house, but fearing it would hurt Wei Wende's pride, Guo Yue gave the newlyweds this small courtyard to live in separately.
Everything was fine at first, but due to the difference in their upbringing, Wei Wende's parents and relatives disliked Miss Guo and began to make things difficult for her. At first, they asked for money, saying that it was for her younger brother's wedding. Miss Guo thought that her mother-in-law's family had worked hard to support her husband's education, so she gave it to them.
Once something is set in motion, it's like opening the door to desire; once it starts, it's unstoppable. One thing leads to another. Miss Guo couldn't stand the Wei family's insatiable greed, so she confronted Wei Wende. He gave her a look that said, "Do you look down on my parents and relatives?" which infuriated Miss Guo.
And so, their relationship went from harmonious at the beginning to constant arguments, and three years passed.
Miss Guo's belly showed no signs of pregnancy, but the Wei family couldn't sit still any longer. Spending the Guo family's money, they began to consider arranging for Wei Wende to take a concubine.
Of course, at this time they only dared to have this idea, but did not dare to actually implement it. In the same year, Guo Yue's business ran into trouble. Guo Yue only had one daughter and no other children. He hurriedly made arrangements for his daughter's future, leaving her the courtyard where she and Wei Wende lived, some savings, and a loyal guard.
With Guo Yue gone, the Wei family's even more vicious nature was revealed.
Scholars value their reputation, so the Wei family dared not act openly and could only plot in secret. Not long after, the Wei family's mother-in-law told Miss Guo to prepare to take care of her "sister".
This infuriated Miss Guo.
All of this was clearly seen by the guard left behind by Guo Yue. Naturally, he couldn't bear to see the beautiful young lady suffer such injustice, so he couldn't help but give Miss Guo some advice.
The two then began to do some unsavory things in the courtyard. One by one, Wei's relatives moved out of the courtyard. Just when Miss Guo thought she could finally live a peaceful life, Wei Wende told her directly that he had been drunk and had a relationship with his classmate's sister at his classmate's house. He hoped that she would be more magnanimous and welcome the newcomer into the family.
Ms. Guo was immediately furious and started making a scene.
Guo Yue doted on his only daughter from a young age, raising her like a boy. She only restrained her nature after marriage, so naturally she refused. She felt that Wei Wende was just a live-in son-in-law, and it was impossible for her to allow him to take a concubine.
Wei Wende felt that she was like a shrew, and the relationship between the two became increasingly tense.
Finally, Miss Guo couldn't stand such a life anymore, so she and the guards would scare Wei Wende every night. When Wei Wende woke up at night, he would ask Miss Guo if he had heard any noises, and Miss Guo would say no. Over time, Wei Wende began to become paranoid.
Half a month later, Wei Wende, in a state of mental confusion and exhaustion, was frightened to death by Miss Guo's act.
During these two weeks, Ms. Guo was not idle. She went around telling her neighbors that her husband had nightmares every day, saying that there was a fox spirit in his dreams. Then, she inadvertently revealed that her husband had an ambiguous relationship with another woman.
