Chapter Forty-Four: Assigning Duties

Shang Xiye escorted Ji Fengyao to her bedroom and then went to the Ink Studio.

Ji Fengyao didn't ask any further questions. Anyway, the two of them didn't intend to become a real couple. As long as they could reach a basic cooperation and maintain appearances, that was enough. They would each do their own thing and not interfere with each other.

Outside the courtyard, Granny Cui led a dozen maids in single file and encountered Shang Xiye, who was leaving, at the courtyard gate.

"Greetings, Your Highness," said Granny Cui and the maids, bowing their heads and greeting Shang Xiye.

Shang Xiye usually ignored the servants' greetings, but this time he stopped and said in a deep voice, "Take good care of them."

Granny Cui looked up in surprise, but didn't dare to raise her head. She answered along with the other young maids, "Yes!"

But in my heart I understood.

No wonder it was Wuying who personally sent people to select them, choosing them from among thousands of old women and maids. It turns out that the prince probably values the newly arrived princess even more than she thought.

After Shang Xiye, Wuying, and Wuhen had walked away, Granny Cui straightened up and whispered to the dozen or so maids, "Did you all understand? From now on, be careful in your actions. No matter what is said outside, this mistress inside is our mistress. Protecting her is our duty as servants!"

"Yes!" the girls answered crisply.

Ji Fengyao, who was inside the room, had already removed her wedding veil and was wondering where to get some water to take a bath when she looked up and saw Granny Cui leading a group of maids over.

Even though she had never eaten pork, she had seen pigs walk. Ji Fengyao immediately understood that the head maid of the courtyard had brought someone to report their arrival. She straightened her clothes, left the bedroom, went to the side hall, and sat upright on the couch.

Granny Cui then led a group of young maids to kneel on the ground and kowtow, saying, "Greetings, Your Highness! Greetings, Mistress!"

"Hmm," Ji Fengyao thought about the dramas she watched in her previous life and made a gesture to get up.

Seeing that the princess's etiquette was not standard but her demeanor was impressive, Cui Mama led a group of maids to their feet and said gently, "Your Highness, this servant is Cui Shi. The prince sent someone to select the head maids to serve at Hui Nuan Pavilion. These are all carefully selected maids. How do you think we should assign them?"

“We don’t have many rules in Vulture Village, and I’m not familiar with these girls. Since you are the head maid chosen by the prince, you can make the decision on such a small matter as assigning tasks. Consider this my first test for you,” Ji Fengyao said calmly, without hiding her identity as a bandit.

Having been warned and admonished by Shang Xiye and Granny Cui beforehand, the maids did not show any unusual reaction when Ji Fengyao brought up the topic of bandits. They remained respectfully standing in place, waiting for orders.

This pleased Ji Fengyao greatly, and she silently credited Shang Xiye for another achievement.

He didn't let anyone else put random people in her yard, which really saved her a lot of trouble.

Upon hearing Ji Fengyao's words, Granny Cui quickly and accurately called out the names of the maids and assigned them tasks one by one. In addition to six maids for general work, four maids for miscellaneous work, and three maids in charge of the storeroom, she also selected two maids for the main house to serve Ji Fengyao in her room, responsible for taking care of her daily needs.

Ji Fengyao saw that the two were clever and beautiful, one with a gentle personality and the other with a quick-witted and innocent nature. She was pleased with them and gave them names: the gentle one was called Lin Shuang and the quick-witted one was called Bai Lu.

After the tasks were assigned, Ji Fengyao was not as vicious and tyrannical as rumored. She simply instructed them to prepare hot water so she could bathe and change. Everyone was delighted, and the atmosphere in the courtyard quickly became lively.
