Lin Xihe walked forward with a somewhat hurried pace.
The surroundings were so quiet it was almost oppressive, except for the crunching sound of her footsteps on the snow.
The man in white stood quietly until he heard footsteps behind him, at which point he slowly turned around.
The man's dark hair was neatly tied back, with a fine jade hairpin inserted in it. The hairpin gleamed with a warm and soft luster in the dim sunlight, just like the aura he exuded, understated and elegant.
His face was as white as snow, his features exquisitely crafted like finely sculpted jade, every line flowing smoothly and naturally, without a single flaw. His eyes and brows exuded an innate elegance, as if all the world's clamor was irrelevant to him.
"May I ask, are you Miss Lin Xihe?" the man asked, his voice clear and pleasant.
The expectant light that had been shining in Lin Xihe's eyes faded as quickly as a shooting star the moment she saw the man's face.
The person before her was not the one she longed for, and disappointment surged into her heart like a tide, instantly drowning out her joy.
However, out of politeness, she forced herself to be cheerful and replied softly, "Indeed, may I ask how you come to know me, sir?"
"My name is Mu Ruoyan. I have been entrusted by someone to deliver something to you, young lady." Mu Ruoyan bowed slightly, his posture humble and polite.
After saying that, he slowly reached into his sleeve with his long, slender, and fair fingers, and after a moment, he took out a jade pendant.
Lin Xihe recognized the jade pendant at a glance.
That was the jade pendant that Gu Qinghuai always wore close to his body around his neck. It was like a part of Gu Qinghuai's body, never leaving him.
She had two intimate encounters with Gu Qinghuai. The jade pendant was always worn securely around Gu Qinghuai's neck, but it would occasionally slip off her skin, leaving a warm touch.
"Have you met Gu Qinghuai?"
Lin Xihe's voice unconsciously rose a few decibels, and her tone was filled with barely suppressed excitement.
"I come from Nanzhao." Mu Ruoyan's expression was sincere, and his gaze met Lin Xihe's burning eyes without any hesitation.
"How is he?"
"He has been poisoned and is now like a dead man."
Mu Ruoyan's gaze was fixed on Lin Xihe's face, trying to catch even the slightest change in her emotions.
"So you're not dead, right?" The panic on Lin Xihe's face vanished instantly, replaced by an unwavering expression.
She told herself countless times that Gu Qinghuai wouldn't die easily. As long as there was a sliver of hope, even if there was only a one in ten thousand chance, she believed there would be a way to bring him back.
However, Lin Xihe's reaction was clearly beyond Mu Ruoyan's expectations. His eyebrows furrowed slightly, a movement so quick that it was almost imperceptible unless one looked closely.
"No one can cure this curse," Mu Ruoyan said confidently once again.
Lin Xihe remained calm, subtly taking a step back and bowing gracefully, her words displaying just the right amount of politeness: "May I ask, young master, where is Qinghuai now? And what is your relationship with Qinghuai?"
"He is still in Nanzhao. He is my benefactor who saved me." Mu Ruoyan returned the greeting with clasped hands, his expression full of respect.
"Does the young master know Gu Qinghuai's exact location?"
“He lives in a very secluded family at the foot of Diancang Mountain. I tried to bring him back, but failed. If you wish to see him, I am willing to accompany you.” Mu Ruoyan’s expression was gentle and refined as he spoke softly, “But before General Gu fell into a coma, he only wished that you live a good life and that you would not need to look for him anymore.”
Upon hearing this, Lin Xihe fell silent, momentarily at a loss for words.
Mu Ruoyan wasn't in a hurry to urge him; she simply stepped aside quietly and waited patiently.
Time seemed to stand still. After a long while, the three of them were covered with a thick layer of snow, as if they had become sculptures in this icy world.
"How many days will you stay in Moyu City, young master?" Lin Xihe broke the silence.
"The fifth day. Stayed at the Yingke Restaurant."
Mu Ruoyan noticed Lin Xihe's hesitation, and he was willing to give her enough time to think it over.
Watching Mu Ruoyan's retreating figure, Ling Shuang, who had been following behind Lin Xihe, finally spoke up: "Miss, this person's origins are unknown, and he may not be trustworthy."
"I know," Lin Xihe replied softly, her voice filled with deep weariness.
She was well aware that Mu Ruoyan's identity was questionable and that this trip might be fraught with danger, but the thought that Gu Qinghuai might be in trouble made it impossible for her to stand idly by.
Now, all she could do was try to seek help. Back at her residence, Lin Xihe went straight to the rocking chair and lay down on it.
She held her breath and silently repeated in her mind, "999, 999..."
In the past, the system would always appear suddenly without warning, and she had no idea whether such a call would be answered.
But at this moment, she was desperate and this was the only lifeline she could grasp. She was unwilling to give up even if there was only a sliver of hope.
She felt as if she had called out tens of thousands of times, but the system still did not respond.
After finishing her meal, Lin Xihe told Ling Xue to take the child to sleep, while she continued to try to wake up 999.
Hello, 99.
"Hi, 999."
"999, 999".
"Student 999?"
"999 system?"
She kept calling out like that, but even after most of the night had passed, she still received no response.
Late at night, a mechanical voice finally broke the silence.
