Their conversation abruptly ended.
Lin Xihe appeared calm, but her heart was churning with turbulent emotions. Right now, her only reliance was the poison and antidote given to her by Tao Musheng, as well as a few hidden weapons that she could not use unless it was a matter of life and death.
Upon careful consideration, the chances of successfully rescuing Gu Qinghuai on this mission are extremely slim.
I made a solemn promise to Ji Zhuo that I would return safely, but now I realize that I was oversimplifying things.
What sustained her through gritted teeth and perseverance was only that one stubborn belief in her heart—she firmly believed that the system would not stand idly by and watch her fall into a desperate situation.
However, this was just her baseless conjecture, and she never verified it with the system.
Lin Xihe rubbed her forehead, her gaze drifting towards Mu Ruoyan. A complex emotion flashed in her eyes as she struggled with the thought: Could it be that, in order to achieve her goal, she really had to take this path of deceiving his feelings?
But I'm not sure I have the ability...
That afternoon, it was as if the heavens had overturned a basin of water. A torrential downpour began without warning, and the rolling thunder made people's eardrums ache and their hearts race with panic.
The group hurried on their way, but they didn't see a single village or inn where they could rest.
After much trouble, they finally found a dilapidated temple, which at least provided shelter from the wind and rain.
Mu Ruoyan and Lin Xihe escaped the calamity temporarily inside the carriage. However, the other three accompanying them were not so lucky and were soaked to the bone by the sudden downpour.
Worried that the bundles on the carriage would get wet in the rain, Lin Xihe quickly carried them all into the dilapidated temple.
Upon entering the dilapidated temple, one sees a raging storm outside, while the interior is shrouded in darkness.
The accompanying people quickly lit two piles of firewood on either side of the temple, and set up a frame in the middle, draping some clothes as a partition to separate the men's and women's areas.
Lin Xihe found a corner, slowly sat down, and then spread her cloak flat on the ground, afraid of catching a cold again.
In the cold, hard, and damp place, he only ate a few pieces of pastry to fill his stomach and did not sleep well.
Lin Xihe felt as if she had just fallen asleep when someone gently patted her, and then a hand covered her mouth.
Mu Ruoyan leaned down and whispered in her ear, "Lin Xihe, there's an assassin."
Lin Xihe tensed up instantly, blinking rapidly to indicate that she understood. She quickly reached for the bundle beside her, swiftly pulling out a bracelet that could be used as a hidden arrow, along with poison.
This sense of tension, like being ambushed, is not the first time it has struck.
"Are there many people?" Lin Xihe asked softly, her voice trembling.
"Judging from the footsteps, the temple is already surrounded." Mu Ruoyan said, her hand already on the soft sword at her waist, her whole body tense, ready to strike.
"Does that mean I'm doomed?" Lin Xihe's heart jumped into her throat.
"joke."
Mu Ruoyan curled her lips into a disdainful smile, as if she didn't take these assassins seriously at all.
However, his hand quietly wrapped around Lin Xihe's back.
Lin Xihe knew that she had limited ability to protect herself, so she did not refuse Mu Ruoyan's protection. She just quickened her pace and put the bracelet on her hand.
Before Lin Xihe could finish her action, a group of black-clad assassins surged into the room like a tidal wave.
The three guards beside Mu Ruoyan reacted quickly and rushed out to meet the attack.
In an instant, the sound of fierce fighting erupted in the dilapidated temple, with the sounds of clashing weapons and shouts of battle mingling together.
Lin Xihe was truly shocked.
She hadn't expected that these three seemingly young guards would be so incredibly powerful, far surpassing Yue Feng and Yue Lang, who were by Ji Zhuo's side. They could easily take on ten men each.
Mu Ruoyan simply stood guard beside Lin Xihe and did not make a move.
Lin Xihe felt that only ten minutes had passed, but dozens of assassins had already fallen one after another.
Mu Ruoyan noticed Lin Xihe's slight trembling and gently comforted her, "Don't tremble, you'll be alright."
Can I close my eyes?
Lin Xihe was both afraid of the potential danger and terrified of the bloody scene before her. Seeing that Mu Ruoyan's servants were fully capable of handling the situation, Lin Xihe just wanted to close her eyes and not see any of it.
"good."
Upon hearing Mu Ruoyan's response, Lin Xihe gripped the poison bottle tightly and closed her eyes.
Feeling Lin Xihe's body still trembling slightly, Mu Ruoyan pressed her head to his chest and said with a hint of teasing, "You're those two's woman, yet you're so afraid of this kind of scene?"
Lin Xihe remained silent, waiting quietly until the fighting completely ceased.
"Who sent you?" The attendant deliberately left one alive, pressing his sword firmly against the man's neck.
In truth, the attendant knew in his heart that he had no hope of getting an answer and was just waiting for the man to take his own life.
As expected, the assassin clenched his fist instantly, veins bulging on his forehead, and then coughed up black blood and died.
Mu Ruoyan's gaze was sharp as she glanced at the attendant. The attendant understood immediately and replied respectfully, "Judging from their clothing and manner of doing so, they are from the Great Hao."
Mu Ruoyan gently patted Lin Xihe's shoulder and asked with a burning gaze, "It seems they came for you."
"Me? Why not you?" Lin Xihe asked back with her eyes closed.
“Your lover didn’t send anyone to follow us. Besides, he couldn’t possibly know what I did to you yesterday. So, it’s impossible that he’s here for me. Furthermore, I haven’t offended anyone in your Great Hao territory,” Mu Ruoyan patiently explained to Lin Xihe.
Then he turned to his servants and ordered, "Carry these corpses out; we'll have to sleep here tonight."
