In this eerily quiet moment, Ji Zhuo from the next bed suddenly spoke up: "Who are you talking to? Are you having a nightmare?"
Lin Xihe was startled and hurriedly asked, "Did you hear anything?"
"Aside from the creaking of your bed and your startled voice, there was no other sound."
Upon hearing this, Lin Xihe was stunned and began to wonder: Could it be that she had just fallen asleep and the strange electronic sound she heard was just a hallucination in her half-awake state?
"Then... maybe I misheard."
"Are you not sleeping well?" Ji Zhuo seemed to notice her unusual behavior, his tone becoming more concerned as he turned to face her.
Upon hearing this, Lin Xihe recalled how cramped and awkward she had been when they shared a bed before, and replied irritably, "How could that be? I can't sleep well with you!"
Why?
"Why do you think I am?!" Lin Xihe was furious at his appearance, but she couldn't explain the reason directly, so she could only glare at him fiercely. Although the night was thick and she couldn't see, her aura was not diminished at all.
"Alright, stop asking nonsense and go to sleep!" In her heart, that cramped and uncomfortable night was unbearable to recall, and she just wanted to end this conversation as soon as possible.
Ji Zhuo heard this but misunderstood it, thinking that Lin Xihe, like himself, was troubled by her thoughts and fantasies while sleeping in the same bed. Thinking of this, the corners of his mouth unconsciously turned up slightly, and he turned over contentedly. Before long, he fell into a deep sleep.
...
When I ate terrible food again.
Lin Xihe scooped a spoonful of the radish and egg stew in front of her, put it in her mouth and took a small bite. As soon as her tongue touched the strange taste, an indescribable feeling of speechlessness welled up in her heart.
Goodness, this radish and egg stew is surprisingly unconventional – it's sweet!
The sweet and salty flavors, which should not be "meeting" in this dish, intertwine and "run wild" on the taste buds, making it really hard to swallow.
"You definitely did this on purpose, A-Jian!" Lin Xihe's eyebrows shot up, her almond eyes widened, and she stared straight at Ji Zhuo, her gaze seeming to burn two holes in him.
"Intentionally what?"
"What else could you be doing on purpose? You deliberately make the food taste so bad every day, just messing with me! If you don't want to cook, just say so. Why are you messing with me every day?"
Ji Zhuo looked at Lin Xihe, who was furious, and frowned even more. He said in a deep voice, "You said yourself that you liked my 'free expression' before, and you said the word 'like' every day."
"Open your eyes and take a good look! Is this stuff any human being able to eat? I've been gritting my teeth and forcing myself to swallow it for three whole days. Even a pig would have made some decent progress after three days of diligently learning cooking from a master!" Lin Xihe shouted, her heart aching as she thought of the two eggs that had been wasted for no reason. In that pain, she spoke without thinking.
"Lin Xihe, don't speak to me so bluntly. I told you before that I don't like such a shrewish woman. She has lost her gentleness and her sense of propriety." Ji Zhuo's face darkened, and the pressure around him suddenly dropped. His tone was full of displeasure, revealing his annoyance at being disobeyed.
"What kind of appearance you prefer is none of my business, and I have no feelings for you anyway." Lin Xihe retorted without backing down.
"You don't like me?"
"Why should I like you? It's just because you have a pretty face. But even the best looks can't fill an empty stomach. Besides, you always have that long face. Even though you have a sword at your waist, you might be able to sell it for a few bucks, but what will you do after that? With your hands that never lift a finger, you probably can't even farm. You'll be starving and starving in the future!" Lin Xihe crossed her arms, raised her chin slightly, and launched into a tirade of accusations without holding back.
"Now that you can move around, when are you going to leave my house?"
"Are you kicking me out again?"
"Yeah, you've been loitering here for ages, you're really delaying my business." Lin Xihe spread her hands, speaking as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
"What have I done to bother you?" Ji Zhuo frowned.
"For example, if Dr. Ye brings me back, and you're just standing here, I can't invite him in for a cup of tea and a proper chat."
Upon hearing this, Ji Zhuo felt a tightness in his chest. He never imagined that this woman, who had spent every day with him and even slept in the same bed with him for two days, would now be thinking of another man.
"For him?" Ji Zhuo gritted his teeth and squeezed out these words.
“That’s one of the reasons, anyway. You can still sell those gems for money. Sell them, go to the city, find an inn to stay in, and the waiters will take good care of you. It’s much better than staying here,” Lin Xihe suggested.
Upon hearing this, Ji Zhuo fell silent.
He stood up briskly, strode to the bedside, grabbed his sword, and turned to walk quickly towards the door.
Unexpectedly, no sooner had they stepped out of the house than a series of urgent and arrogant knocks came from outside the yard, accompanied by a shrill, high-pitched female voice shouting, "Open the door!"
Upon hearing the voice, Lin Xihe's heart sank. She instantly recognized it as the cunning village woman who had nearly drowned her, and a headache immediately struck her.
